Please cheer me up with all the wonderful things to look forward to in Autumn.
I have had enough of heatwave after heatwave. Especially as a dog owner. Ive just stuck on Gilmore Girls as a means of escape!

So please join me here if you can't wait for Autumn and share any of your Autumn joys!

Put it in the Christmas section in the hope of finding my kinda people! I

I am so sick of this heat and love, love, love autumn. It's my favourite season.

Any autumnal books anyone can recommend?

Oh there's a load of things I would happily give back to the USA.

The Holidays - (instead of Christmas)
Evil Clowns
Spelling "Hallowe'en" as Halloween
Candy Canes (they look pretty but taste like toothpaste)
Cupcakes with a huge swirl of buttercream (though in America it's different so maybe not as sickly)

Though I do envy the decorations for Hallowe'en , especially when you see houses with huge porches that have piles of pumpkins . Dry , cold weather helps too . And they decorate for a few days not just one night .

Don’t go in The Range then… they have a lovely display of Autumn stuff under the heading of Fall Favourites!
😱😱

Aww congratulations on your retirement 🥳🥳 Im a November too 😊🎆🧡🧡

Thank you ( I’m so bloody excited…sooo much I want to do to the house and garden before Winter!) I’ve got literally a calendar month to go!
I had to be dragged away from the Autumn decs in the shops and persuaded to look at new paint instead😁
Are you a late November baby? I’m almost mid month.

Sasha07 · 02/08/2026 14:55

@Sallycinnamum I'd recommend The Familiars by Stacey Halls.

A pp @MagicThanks mentioned Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver, which after looking it up, immediately went on to my Audible. Haven't started it yet but sounds really good. They also like The Familiars.

@Nearlyadoctor is enjoying A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harness. I need to look that up after sending this, it sounds right up my street!

Sorry if I've missed others recommendations, just had a quick look back and thought it'd be good too see them altogether.

Pumpkin Spice Cafe series by Laurie Gilmore is mentioned alot on the Autumn Facebook page, though they say it's abit 'spicy.' Not sure how much of that there is in them as I haven't looked into them yet.

Oh, I've just remembered on my Audible from Autumn last year, I really enjoyed 'A Witches Guide to...' Series, by Sarah Hawley. It was easy listening while out walking, won't be everyone's cup of tea but might be worth looking into it. I think that has a few... Spicy... Moments too, which isn't my thing but it wasn't too much.

Not so much Autumn novels, but I do get out all my Autumn & Winter cook books for a good “cosy” read😉

Wallaroo21 · 02/08/2026 15:07

I started Gilmore girls again this week too, I agree though as an adult the characters are frustrating. Let’s not even mention the horrific attempt at a reboot they made.

Nearlyadoctor · 02/08/2026 15:20

@Sasha07 - the box set of A Disvovery of Witches is currently available on Amazon for £11.99. I initially looked at the first book in Waterstones and that was £10.99 so decided worth the risk.

I tried The Pumpkin Spice cafe series last autumn and got about half way through the first book, not enough substance/story for me and tbh too much unnecessary spice

Sasha07 · 02/08/2026 15:26

@Nearlyadoctor just ordered, thank you! I was actually just looking on Amazon and came across Book 1 but somehow didn't see the box set, found it now though ☺️
That's what has put me off The Pumpkin Spice Cafe books, you've just confirmed what my impression was but some people seem to love them, so thought I'd mention it.

Nearlyadoctor · 02/08/2026 15:31

@Sasha07 - hopefully you won’t be disappointed. I started the first book yesterday and am nearly half way through already.

I went in The Range today for paint and I deliberately avoided the left side of the shop where the new stock goes .
Need to decorate (wallpaper/paint ) befoe anything else .

TXMaxx/HomeSense had some lovely Hallowe'en stock , cushions and throws with black cats and Tarot patterns

QuokkaCutie · 02/08/2026 19:43

Same here..🙁
Paint before pumpkins..🎃

RowsOfFlowers · 02/08/2026 20:48

Autumn colours, crispy leaves, piles of leaves for the dogs to rummage through, hot water bottles, hot chocolates with marshmalllws, throws, blankets and oversize jumpers and fluffy socks in the evening x

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/08/2026 10:41

It's raining and quite chilly here today so i have come back to bed with a cup of tea, lit a 'pain au chocolate' candle and am aquainting myself with the Gilmore Girls (why have I never seen this?)

My cat is in his basket at my feet purring away. He looks like he's thinking "Yay, it's Autumn!"

Sorry to those who are still sweltering in 30 plus degrees. Autumn comes early, here.

It's from Aldi and smells utterly delicious. DD picked it up a month or so ago. Nipping pit in a couple of hours to check if they still have them in. I shall report back.

Damn, I’m gonna have to keep an eye out. Though I prefer natural candles.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/08/2026 15:57

None of the candles left in Aldi. Apparently they went viral. Didn't spot anything of interest among the new ones, but their autumn and Christmas ones will be due to make an appearance in about a month.

Speaking of candles, I need to get cracking as we have a stall every year at our Scarecrow Festival in early September where we sell our honey and beeswax candles. Three designs are always really popular; owls, fir cones and gingerbread houses. I need around 25 of each. In fact I might get cracking with that now.

Some pics from our afternoon woodland walk today.

I love my annual autumn purchases/rituals. In August I order candles from Druid Edinburgh; Balmoral for September, Saddle for October/November and Woodlands for December. In early September, I light the candle and watch the only autumnal episode of The Darling Buds Of May, then The Halloween Party (Hercule Poirot) and then various episodes of The House of Eliott. And drink a couple of mugs of really good hot chocolate.

And speaking of purchases, I love this jacket! Don't need it but really, really want it!

I am an absolute candle obsessive and have over 100 squirrelled away for the winter months (as well as making my own) yet I had never heard of Druid Edinburgh. I have now signed up and am loving the sound of the Hibernate candle. I may have to indulge!

Also loving the coat. Reminds me of something similar I had in the late 80s.

Sasha07 · 03/08/2026 20:37

Please ignore the mess, I haven't been able to pressure wash/keep on top of that part of the garden for a while but I was cutting my lavender back earlier and noticed this! The leaves are turning red on my Virginia Creeper 😍 my Acer is a beautiful deep red now too, but I've just took the Acer photo so it isn't the best as it's starting to get a bit dark now... but I love the deep reds that Autumn brings out. Will have to get out into the woods at the weekend to see if it's changed up there since last month 🍂
