Thread 14 - the one with BLACK FRIDAY!

1000 replies

Reastie · 26/11/2024 07:55

I think I always (or nearly always!) call the one with Black Friday this name. I'm assuming this thread will see us through the weekend and I'm not premature!!! Make sure you keep your Black Friday bargains genuine bargains - not everything that looks reduced actually is as good a deal as it looks.

Greetings and welcome one and all to a friendly and joyful corner of mn - the Christmas bargain thread. Here, we share Christmas present purchases, ideas, links and discount codes, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic and joy and reduce the financial stress.

It's a very busy thread, so see the tips below for helping everything run smoothly and avoiding repetitions of Cookiegate etc al. It's a lovely, friendly bunch and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you for building such a warm, fuzzy and generous spot on mn. I know I've save so much over the years and am so grateful to all of you for sharing.

Pull up a sleigh and relax with a mulled wine and mince pie, for Christmas has nearly arrived!

@ me if you need anything or you want to let me know anything - the thread moves so fast I can't always keep up so this really helps

A few pointers to make everyone’s life easier and the thread be as useful as possible:

  • It’s handy to put in bold the bargains so they’re easy to spot
  • No affiliate links
  • No need to place mark or post messages of hello or thanks at the start of a new thread - use the ‘watch thread’ button
  • Be nice or leave

If you have any voucher codes to share (or want to check for any) then have a look https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212144-sharing-voucher-codes

The current referral thread for sharing referral codes here . Please use this rather than this page to share referral links to make the sharing fair.

To make clicks links, you set it up like this only without any spaces apart from between the website and the word(s) you’re writing: www.bargainsahoyeveryonecomehere.co.uk

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior for the instructions below.
To make something bold, put this star * either side of the word you want to bold (with no spaces in between)

So starhellostar would look like this.

hello

Obviously use the * not the word star

Some of the below is copied and pasted from previous years, so do @ me if the links don't work

Can anyone suggest any soft cotton jersey men’s pyjamas for mrweasel? I got some a couple of years ago from Primark - premium pima cotton when they were doing fancy eco stuff. He needs XXL as is 6’6” tall. Thanks in advance!

Lands end are great. Come in all sorts of size combinations

For any boardgamers in your lives, this is a great little 2 person game stocking filler, and comes with an expansion for almost the same price as the standalone game. There are P&P costs but there are some great Black Friday deals on there and you get a small discount for multiple games.

Are there any gamers on here who know anything about gaming monitors please? I’ve just had the idea to get one for DS12 but we don’t know the first thing about what we’re looking for. He uses a Nintendo Switch (bought in panic at the start of lockdown!). At the moment my plan is to buy the most expensive RRP that is reduced to under £100, but if anyone has spotted a great deal, I’d really appreciate some advice!
Also, I was looking at the Argos deals and remembered that’s lots of people have Argos deals. How do you get those please? I just downloaded the app, but there are no vouchers on there that I can see.

If you can stretch the budget Costco have some that are brilliant value (but £199!) for the spec and it will future proof a bit as it is so good.
Costco monitor

but I completely appreciate that might not be what you want to spend or feel he needs one with those capabilities.

MamaK19 · 26/11/2024 10:08

Is anyone able to take a picture of the Deans Hamper (Black Friday) to show what kind of box it comes in? Wondering if it is suitable as a gift sent directly to the recipients? Sorry if there was a picture originally I’ve tried to search for thread 12 but can’t find it 🫣

Anyone got any advice on which is better: kids against maturity or cards against humanity kids edition?

We have both of these, we bought Cards Against Humanity for the kids and my eldest was given Kids Against Maturity as a present from one of his friends. Both are great but in my opinion Cards Against Humanity is much better! Kids Against Maturity has more Americanisms in it.

Thank you so much. We’re buying his brother an electric guitar, so we might stretch to this to even things up! Even seeing what brand / specs you have recommended helps as I don’t have a clue what I’m doing but I love getting good value!

FOODIES

Sone really lovely things on the Delli Market website. Interesting hot sauces, condiments, snacks and delicious chocolates with great branding. They sell hampers too. I ordered lots for my cool sibling and used this discount code for 20% off GETPEPESPARM
Hope that helps someone.

Thanks for this. Those Howdah Tandoori chips are my Dad's favourite. I first had them in a craft gin club box, but since found out that Sainsbury's and Holland and Barrett sell them. They are often on offer for £1.50 so worth looking out for them there if you like them (Dad gets a few bags in his stocking each year)

Hobbycraft have some brilliant 3 for 3 offers on as well as lots of stuff half price. My DD loves these eugy animal models and they are included in the 3 for 2 offer. They make an excellent stocking filler.

Great price for Sounds Fishy - a great family party game (you need to be able to read to play!) for Christmas. £13.98

CrochetMadRosie · 26/11/2024 10:18

Not exactly a bargain, but a heads up that if like us you have Jus-Rol croissants etc on Christmas morning, they're now in date for Christmas.

One year I couldn't get my hands on them in the week before Christmas, so now I look early and stock up!

Arglefraster · 26/11/2024 09:55

We tried it a few years back & my kids didn't enjoy it. It's quite dry & more like a text book than anything else. I have bookworm kids so it wasn't the amount of text that was the problem they just didn't enjoy the content.(despite the topics being things they're interested in)

obviously YMMV!

Agree with this, really thought they would love it, still have a years worth in a special folder as was so expensive can’t bring myself to recycle them! The beano has been extremely popular- I would recommend that instead!

IlovePond · 26/11/2024 10:19

@MamaK19 - it’s just in a plain cardboard box, apparently. The word ‘hamper’ is a bit misleading.

Does anyone have any recommendations for those little pots for yoghurt, with a separate compartment for fruit/muesli?

Thanks.

Sistema do one of these.

Sistema Klip It Colour Accents Breakfast To Go Container, Assorted Colours, One Only Supplied amzn.eu/d/fRs9bDZ

I've seen loads of Sistema stuff in tk maxx and homesense so always worth a look in there.

I know nothing either - this recommendation is from the teenager who is very particular!! If nothing else there’s some spec to compare.

The switch can just plug into a tv so you could get him a tv if that’s something he’d like.

Another thought.
If he’s a Nintendo gamer, mine hooks up their switch & Wii to a projector (Amazon special from this thread last year!) and plays with their mates.
it’s not comparable quality to the monitor but a fun option, especially with the Wii which we got from cex for not a lot.

I appreciate I’ve wittered on with lots of stuff you didn’t actually ask.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 26/11/2024 10:30

@BourbonsAreOverated Thank you so much - really appreciate the ideas. His brother is only 2 years older so it is hard to think of things we don’t already have!

I think I’d blow the budget on the gaming monitor if I thought he’s going to move onto a gaming pc, steam games or Xbox.
if not I might go for a tv or cheaper option.

WimbyAce · 26/11/2024 10:39

Does anyone have free delivery code for matalan or do we think they might do one Friday? Hate paying delivery but our closest is a pain to get to.

Yes, we've ended up in the same situation of not being able to get them with the Christmas shop. The Jus rol Cinnamon swirls have gone up on price a bit, but Sainsbury's currently have them on a Nectar deal at £1.75. The Pain au Chocolat are on the same offer. The Lurpak is also now in its Christmas packaging and also on a Nectar deal at £3.

Important stuff, Christmas breakfast! 🥐

catchingzzzeds · 26/11/2024 10:39

@MeanMrMustardSeed we've bought a curved gaming monitor from Curry's, they have some good deals at the moment. Get the highest Hz you can for your budget, the one we bought is 250 Hz which according to gamer DS is perfect

MammaGnomes · 26/11/2024 10:40

My DD11 will be walking to school by herself next year. Is there such thing as a watch that will fit her wrist whereby I can track her movements but doesn't need her phone?

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 26/11/2024 10:51

My local TKMaxx had absolutely heaps of the Spode Christmas tree china. Can't see any of it online.

I got a sandwich platter (£19.99), 1lb loaf tin (£14.99), and fluted edge plates (£9.99 each, larger ones £12.99).

They also had cake stands and large roasting dishes, and a covered pot.

I got the original set bargain from these threads, years ago, and they come out every year and give such joy. I like to add a little to the set each year. These are the best prices I've seen in a while, cheaper than any I've found online.

Edited for typo.

The chat doesn't bother me, but people thanking Reastie for the new thread does. Shows who doesn't read her opening post.

And people sharing their referral codes for the same reason.

<grumpy>

That's me told Grin

Lellyo · 26/11/2024 10:58

Could I ask please the people who have ordered the Deans shortbread, how are you getting your 10% discount? I have signed up and registered but not discount code?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 26/11/2024 11:00

Took me a while for it to come through but if need be try mine ... going to try and pm you Grin otherwise I'll be thrown off this thread for two strikes before lunchtime if I paste it here! (No incentive for me it's just the one I got for email sign up)
