Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

Steal pie. But the highlight of the meal will be the neep I paid 17 pounds for where I live.

midsomermurderess · 31/12/2022 19:23

£17 for turnip? Are you on Saturn?

awmum2b · 31/12/2022 19:23

Scottish as well so its steak pie. When I lived in England I got really confused this wasn't a thing there!

Mrsjayy · 31/12/2022 19:24

£'17 for a TURNIP ! @MrsThimbles

I was so shocked I couldn't type swede 😂

Yes. And the Christmas principe were the equivalent of about 9 pounds a kilo.

All that could be heard the table was - I can’t believe how much these were, we feed them to the cattle in Scotland.

No doubt it will be the same tomorrow with the turnip. 😂

MrsThimbles · 31/12/2022 19:27

Parsnips. Not principe

I tell you I’ve got them all warned - don’t dare put it on your plate if there’s a chance you won’t eat it.

I’ll be hovering over them, grudging every last mouthful of it they have till one of them cracks and says you have mine mum, I know now you love this. And I won’t say no!

Mrsjayy · 31/12/2022 19:31

Mine was 50p from Tesco ! You savour yours 😃

TrifledOut · 31/12/2022 19:31

As kids we had bacon and cabbage, followed by Xmas pudding leftovers fried in butter 🤢

We’re not doing anything special tomorrow. Pasta and salad, I think. I like going out for lunch on New Years Day, but not willing to splash the cash this year.

Mrsjayy · 31/12/2022 19:33

My Gran used to fry Christmas pudding with an egg for breakfast.

We are having a treacle cured slow cooked gammon from Waitrose with either mash or dauphinois potatoes and veg.

Pre kids it used to be whatever chocolate we had in the house, with alcohol and then a takeaway in the evening!

Had to get the Waitrose mention Grin

Plump82 · 31/12/2022 19:38

Scottish, so steak pie however as we're vegetarian I've made a "steak" pie filling, ready to make into pie tomorrow. I don't want to blow my own trumpet but it tastes amazing.

Lemonademoney · 31/12/2022 19:39

Usually Christmas Dinner round 2! But this year we all fancied steak so steak it is 😋

devildeepbluesea · 31/12/2022 19:40

Nothing special planned, lots of veg to use up so a chicken traybake I think. Garlic and lemon flavoured.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 31/12/2022 19:47

Another Scottish steak pie family here!

My Granny used to serve a massive vat of stovies with oatcakes and beetroot after the bells in the hope of it preventing my uncles from getting too "merry". Never worked Grin mainly due to the home poured measures of whisky.

itsgettingweird · 31/12/2022 19:55

All the leftover Christmas food!

I have gammon in the freezer.
Meat selection
Cheeses
Crackers
Mince pies
Chocolate fudge cake
Cream

Obviously not all for one meal - likely gammon, egg and chips for lunch and crackers, meats and cheeses for dinner.

Dessert may be eaten at some point - perhaps I should plan that for breakfast Grin

Mummieslncorporated · 31/12/2022 19:56

I'm having duck. We had a steak pie two days ago, so another would be too soon...

Pallisers · 31/12/2022 20:00

We are having friends over so

Blackeyed pea salad (they are supposed to be eaten on new years day for good luck
Roast beef and gravy, asparagus, green beans, roast potatoes
Apple and pear crumble and ice cream

ShesThunderstorms · 31/12/2022 20:10

We're just having a roast chicken dinner but with more extras than usual- pigs in blankets, stuffing, cauliflower cheese, mash and roasties, parsnips, roast carrots, broccoli, swede and carrot mash and yorkie puds. Followed by trifle if we can fit it in!

SnowAndIceLobelia · 31/12/2022 20:10

I totally forgot the shops would be closed and we have little in because i have been going through our freezer like a Queen.

So for us it will be pasta bake with as many droopy veg I can find to chuck in.

if i had planned better though i would have had a lovely slow roasted lamb with rosemary, and potato dauphinoise and maybe a rattatoiulle.

dementedpixie · 31/12/2022 20:12

My local supermarkets are open tomorrow (scotland)

SnowAndIceLobelia · 31/12/2022 20:18

ooh... actually, now i think about it i was just assuming they will be shut. if open i might do steak pie as thanks to this thread I now have a craving!!

saturdaymorningbored · 31/12/2022 20:26
