Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

Don't have a family tradition, but as it's a Sunday will do a roast dinner. Not a fancy one, just what we normally have, and dessert will be fruit or yoghurt if anything.
Cracking on with the housework and got some work to do before term starts, as well as getting the kids back into a routine. So dinner needs to be hassle free.

We're having a whiskey-aged Cote de Boeuf, with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots, and broccoli, with horseradish sauce and gravy. Possibly followed by apple crumble and custard.

TheScottishPlay · 31/12/2022 11:23

In good Scottish Ne'ersday tradition, DH will have Steak pie, tatties, carrots and sprouts. DS and I will a vegan version of pie with the veg.

EspeciallyDetermined · 31/12/2022 11:24

It's just a normal day for us and we don't do a roast on Sunday routinely anyway so if will be pasta or similar.

Steak pie as I'm in Scotland and its traditional

Yes this is what we have.

Baconand · 31/12/2022 11:27

It varies here. We are having steak and chips with onion rings, field mushrooms and peas

Slimjimtobe · 31/12/2022 11:28

We are going out for a nice change for dinner

YouWouldNotBelieveIt · 31/12/2022 11:28

We'll be having roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, peas and broccoli. Husband will cook it, just the 2 of us (a nice change from all the years we've had family here)

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/12/2022 11:29

We are having a ham

PartnersInCrime · 31/12/2022 11:31

A beef roast and a pavlova. Not hosting anyone but was away for Christmas so looking forward to a nice meal at home.

silverclock222 · 31/12/2022 11:35

Beef olives in pepper sauce, roast and mashed potatoes, buttered carrots and broccoli. Scotland here but not steak pie for us.

HelenHywater · 31/12/2022 11:44

Inspired by another thread I'm doing Ottolenghi's lamb shawarma recipe plus a couple of his side dishes.

My dd is back to university the next day, so it's a chance to say goodbye to her too and the last meal for all of us together for a while.

the lamb was very expensive! I can't burn it and there has to be leftovers for at least a day.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 31/12/2022 11:44

Steak pie in Scotland!

HelenHywater · 31/12/2022 11:45

I didn't know about the Scottish Steak Pie tradition - I might appropriate that next year!

BinauralBeats · 31/12/2022 11:49

Another answer of steak pie as we're in Scotland. With mushy peas. The proper ones you soak overnight and then drown in vinegar once they're cooked!

ApplePippa · 31/12/2022 11:49

Beef casserole with garlic bread, and lots of red wine.

MissPoldark · 31/12/2022 11:50

a roast dinner but instead of a joint of meat we’re having big pigs in blankets

Oh I'm not keen we have garden peas instead I do put vinegar on mine just as an homage 😃

FrownedUpon · 31/12/2022 11:55

Leftover beef fillet & accompaniments from tonight.

Tintackedsea · 31/12/2022 09:50

We're having a ham joint and cherry cheesecake for pudding.

We should be having steak pie I suppose. That's more traditional.

Which tradition is that?

pinneddownbytabbies · 31/12/2022 12:01

We're having lamb this year, and I bought it this morning. By gum it's a big one and it cost more than I paid for the turkey at Christmas. We've had a rotten time over the last few weeks what with one thing and another, and we don't have lamb that often, so I thought 'sod it'!

Me too - I do have some Scottish ancestors in my family tree (3x great grandparents), and I like a good steak pie.

Littlepixie85 · 31/12/2022 12:07

After suffering flu all through the Christmas period whilst still hosting and cooking Christmas Eve/Day big meals I think a Chinese takeaway is the only option for New Year's Day! Can't wait!

mindutopia · 31/12/2022 12:09

We are doing a southern American style black eyed pea stew with mac & cheese, greens and honey cornbread.

Usually do pork, potatoes and cabbage as that’s what we always had growing up.

funniestpersonyouknow · 31/12/2022 12:20

We have a tradition of having toad in the hole but with pigs in blankets, and lots and lots of veg to balance it out!
