Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

OP posts:

It's my Dad's birthday, so we always have a massive roast lunch, followed by nibbles in the evening because everyone is still too full after stuffing themselves

JazzTheDog · 31/12/2022 17:56

Also Scottish and would normally have steak pie but this year DS2 (18) has asked for mince, tatties and mealie which will be served in a giant Yorkshire with peas and carrots.

Have a millionaires cheesecake for pudding.

nadjasknee · 31/12/2022 17:57

Chateau briand with red wine jus and a mahoosive cheese board

Waitwhat23 · 31/12/2022 18:06

Scottish, so steak pie. There's been massive queues outside all the butchers today and yesterday.

The underside of the pastry has to be soggy imo. A relative used to cook the pastry separately on a baking tray and stick it on at the end. It was just so wrong.

Made my lentil soup earlier too - from proper ham hough stock.

Oh and I've made a trifle although not a traditional one as it's made with chocolate cake and contains Cointreau, brandy, raspberries custard and is topped with a mixture of whipped cream and brandy sauce. 😋

could you post the recipe please.

We are having steak pie. Scottish traditional New Year Dinner.

My gran used to make steak pie for us visiting her just after the Bells. We save ours for New Years Day Lunch/Dinner.

pairofrollerskates · 31/12/2022 17:47

Traditional Ne'er
day meal in Scotland is steak pie. My grandmother used to serve it up with mash and peas right after the bells.

My mum used to do this to soak up the drink that had already been consumed ha ha. We serve it on Ne’er Day now - goodness knows how we used to manage a heavy meal at midnight.

Clootie dumplin' for pudding...? 😍

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 31/12/2022 18:21

Ham& lentil soup, steak pie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We're having glazed gammon roast followed by apple spice strudel. Leftover gammon will be used the next day to go with pineapple in demerera sugar, chips & peas. Back to healthy eating on the 3rd..saying that we've got a tonne of chocolate to eat and christmas hotel chocolat hot chocolate to get through so January won't be too bad.

BazingaBaby · 31/12/2022 18:31

We'll be having a honey glazed gammon joint and pork crackling joint with various veg and roasties. Pretty much a Christmas dinner and we'll all be knackered from staying up tonight so nothing else will be getting done all day.

Gardengirl108 · 31/12/2022 18:32

We’re having the other half of the Mushroom Wellington we made for Christmas lunch (we froze it) as part of a roast dinner.

justasking111 · 31/12/2022 18:34

We always do a brunch highland breakfast. So sausage, bacon, eggs, haggis, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and marmalade.

Blueberrycreampie · 31/12/2022 18:35

@Anotherbloomingchristmas Oh God, it's not really a recipe but here goes. Chunks of M&S choc tray bake cake in a trifle bowl, a generous amount of Cointreau and a similar slosh of brandy. I then emptied a tray of frozen raspberries over, followed by custard from a carton. I then whisked some double cream and some Waitrose brandy sauce together and covered the custard. It's in the fridge now and I am planning to decorate it with chocolate balls and raspberries and or glacé cherries. I will report back to tell you if it was any good!

I miss being able to get ham houghs here in SE England. 😞

Blueberrycreampie · 31/12/2022 18:41

@justasking111 That's what I'm hoping!

TeddyTed · 31/12/2022 18:52

All these meals sound amazing. We have a tradition of Domino’s for NYD here (can’t change that now, there’ll be complaints from the smaller ones). Planning a roast chicken and the usual trimmings on Bank Holiday Monday.

Loobieloogold · 31/12/2022 18:53

Steak pie, like I have done every year since I can remember regardless if at parents, my house with (soon to be exH) etc etc. It's a Scottish thing!

I'm at my parents this year, the pie is already there and waiting, loads of veg, potatoes, then cake / whatever and prob cheese afterwards. Can't wait!

I’d like to be at RS Archer’s dinner tonight:
Garlic scallops with cream
Beef steak four ways with truffle mashed potatoes, mushrooms, corn on the cob, lemon and ginger spinach
Cointreau soufflé

I am in fact having chicken korma. Wish I’d thought of steak pie.

Is he still spinning out that Twitter novella? 😂
(he blocks anyone that points out the obvious fictions and plot holes)

MonsterKidz · 31/12/2022 18:56

Massive steak pie, mash, honey carrots and peas.

Vienetta for pudding.

I never take any of it seriously. I jut enjoy his lovely (fictional) French life and descriptions of his splendid meals as a twitter palette cleanser. He never struck me as the blocking kind though.

Tamarindtree · 31/12/2022 19:13

We are going to my sister's tomorrow and she is serving a traybake of roasted veg, halloumi and hasselback potatoes. I’m bringing apple crumble and custard. We are also bringing our own drinks which are soft drinks and we are bringing bottles of elderflower Shloer.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 31/12/2022 19:14

Roast lamb and then we have cheesecake and crumble for pud. Any excuse for a roast here!

TerfOnATrain · 31/12/2022 19:18

Not one to draw on my distant Irish and Welsh heritage, for me, NY signifies a new start. So New Year’s Day is ALWAYS “new start” food. Good long walk and healthy food, lots of veg and New Years resolutions.

two stone down, two to go by end of March.

It will probably be Pinch of Nom baked spaghetti and a six mile walk.
