Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

Not one to draw on my distant Irish and Welsh heritage, for me, NY signifies a new start. So New Year’s Day is ALWAYS “new start” food. Good long walk and healthy food, lots of veg and New Years resolutions.

two stone down, two to go by end of March.

It will probably be Pinch of Nom baked spaghetti and a six mile walk.

Well done to you!
My birthday is the 5th and there will be cake (and possibly takeaway) so I'm going to wait until after then to be good

Went to pick up our steak pie at the butchers first thing this morning. Queue was massive, would never have got one if it hadn’t been ordered already

My mum had pre-ordered it at the start of November as she does every year as soon as they open their order book

But I am beans rather than peas! And mash with lentil soup for starter. Usually too full for dessert but I think there is a trifle in the fridge if anyone wants any

I look forward to my New Year dinner so much more than Christmas dinner

You make your own traditions, don't you? English daughter of Irish and English parents. I must ask what my brother and sister are going to eat.

Benmac · 31/12/2022 21:20

Steak Pie. It's the law in Scotland.Boiled potatoes, peas and gravy.

cinders222 · 31/12/2022 21:25

Scottish - Steak pie, veg, mash and we like a bit of cauliflower cheese with ours.
Then nightshift at work so a buffet in early hours of 2nd.

Christmasisshit · 31/12/2022 21:28

This year, NY's Day meal consists of pepperoni pizza. We have had a lovely meal this evening and no one needs more work tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

Justme10 · 31/12/2022 21:43

My local supermarkets are open tomorrow (scotland)

Really? My local Scotmid is open, but the decent sized supermarkets near me aren't. Which honestly imo is better. Let as many people as possible have new year off!

ShinyPikachu · 31/12/2022 21:49

Another Scot with a steak pie here.

Homemade veggie soup for starters and the pie will be served with mash and boiled carrots. I might do a few sprouts for me as a PP mentioning sprouts has put me in the mood and I have some frozen ones since I'm the only one who eats them here.

Nothing planned for after at all, we're not big dessert people anyway and there's still a ton of Christmas chocolate around the house. We've got lots of cheese and crackers for tonight so we could even have a cheeseboard if we wanted tomorrow too (although I am planning on demolishing the entire wedge of brie tonight).

whatwasIgoingtosay · 31/12/2022 21:58

Steak pie, of course!

Alici · 31/12/2022 22:11

We have a roast dinner on 1st January, no matter what day it falls on. We have one every Sunday though so would have been having one tomorrow regardless.

Xtraincome · 01/01/2023 00:33

DH is doing a fry up minus the eggs due to shortage 😆

That will be it I think. Only a few days left until back 2 school/work here. Gotta get my head in the zone for normality and routine- booooo!!!

AdoraBell · 01/01/2023 00:35

No plan as yet but DH has just suggested to go the local pub. If that doesn’t work I’ll do a freezer raid.

FlickyCrumble · 01/01/2023 00:43

Always a second roast with red meat. Play games, watch movies have special treats - it’s still Christmas season for us.

Glorieta · 01/01/2023 00:44

Another steak pie here followed by a retro yule log vienetta

NoDairyNoProblem · 01/01/2023 01:00

Another one for steak pie, DH collected it from the butchers this morning and it’s much bigger than I expected (feeds 6-8 apparently). I am serving it with chipolatas, mash, savoy cabbage, broccoli in a cheese sauce and carrots followed by winter berry pavlova or lemon posset and shortbread for dessert.

SoShallINever · 01/01/2023 01:20

We had homemade steak pie today with mash, peas, carrots and sautéed courgettes.
Tomorrow is roast leg of lamb with red cabbage, roast parsnips and roast potatoes and carrots.

Steak pie as I'm in Scotland and its traditional

It’s the law!

BashfulClam · 01/01/2023 01:44

Steak pie and no cleaning or washing as it ‘washes’ away the new luck (or ‘washes away a life’).

womblesofwimbledon5 · 01/01/2023 02:33

Chicken jalfrezi with all the accompaniments and the frozen Indian samosas etc if the kids are home - if not maybe a fry up or a takeaway!

AFigmentOfMyOwnImagination · 01/01/2023 03:04

It has to be steak pie. New year woildnt be the same without it

My DH thinks I made this up to have one day of the year off 😂
