Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

Steak pie with link sausage in it, mash, roast potatoes, carrots and peas. Apple tart and custard for dessert.

We are having roast lamb but yes it was expensive.
I’m making a lemon meringue pie too.

Theneverendingdrama · 31/12/2022 16:34

Is the steak pie topped with mash or pastry? I'm in Ireland so unsure of the Scottish tradition but my mouth is watering at the thought of steak pie!

I went with lamb in the end for tomorrow - bought half a leg rather than the full leg.

Always pastry on a steak pie. Mashed potato as a side.

HaggisWurst · 31/12/2022 16:39

Another Scot here... Steak pie.

We’re having cold meats and cheeses with bread, pickles etc as having family friends over for games.

Blueberrycreampie · 31/12/2022 16:44

I'm roasting a large joint of beef that I've had in my freezer for a few months. I'm looking forward to it and hope I can do it justice. Only 2 of us so plenty for other meals for a few days.

Blueberrycreampie · 31/12/2022 16:47

Oh and I've made a trifle although not a traditional one as it's made with chocolate cake and contains Cointreau, brandy, raspberries custard and is topped with a mixture of whipped cream and brandy sauce. 😋

Daffodilis · 31/12/2022 16:50

Homemade steak pie, mash potato and veggies

Forgive me being ignorant but what’s the thing about steak pie if Scottish I love steak pie.

It's a tradition in Scotland to have steak pie for dinner on New Year's Day. Maybe not Scotland wide though I'm not sure.

Yum, sounds delicious. Going to try similar some time.

@Theneverendingdrama It's just because I had a lot of chocolate cake left over and been wracking my brains as to what to do with it. Then didn't have quite enough double cream so had to scoop it all off the trifle and mix with brandy sauce I got reduced in Waitrose yesterday. Will pop back to let you know how it tastes!

Bagpuss2022 · 31/12/2022 17:07

Steak roast potatoes and veg simple and easy to do but feels a bit more special

LP9 · 31/12/2022 17:14

I'm Scottish and I'm having steak pie, neeps and tatties. Normally I'd have beef sausage in the pie too but I live in England now so can't find any. Trifle for dessert.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 31/12/2022 17:18

Upim cooking a gammon roast tonight so will have it cold tomorrow if there is anything left. If not I have an enormous piece of topside we didn't eat last week.

MintyPrincess · 31/12/2022 17:19

Lasagne tomorrow as might be hungover but Tuesday I'm doing a beef and pork roast dinner with all the trimmings. Its the last day we're off before work and school resumes.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 31/12/2022 17:29

Left over party food I expect.

midsomermurderess · 31/12/2022 17:36

I’d like to be at RS Archer’s dinner tonight:
Garlic scallops with cream
Beef steak four ways with truffle mashed potatoes, mushrooms, corn on the cob, lemon and ginger spinach
Cointreau soufflé

I am in fact having chicken korma. Wish I’d thought of steak pie.

CosyScentedCandles · 31/12/2022 17:38

Taken the ham and Turkey leftover from Christmas out of the freezer to make a pie 😍

Titsywoo · 31/12/2022 17:45

I didn't realise steak pie was a tradition for New Years Day. Honestly I haven't got a plan for tomorrows dinner - I do have a large salmon wellington in the freezer so might do that. We are going into London for a walk and quick lunch as well (nothing bit - most likely Shake Shack as we love it!).

pairofrollerskates · 31/12/2022 17:47

Traditional Ne'er
day meal in Scotland is steak pie. My grandmother used to serve it up with mash and peas right after the bells.

Justgivemehotchocolate · 31/12/2022 17:49

Full roast with all the trimmings, basically another Christmas dinner, really looking forward to it😋

IamSamantha · 31/12/2022 17:51

We're having guests so it's homemade lasagne or chicken curry or baked salmon with new potatoes, fresh crust bread, lots of salads, coleslaw and salad toppers. Cheese and cracker board with fruit and nuts. Black forest gateau or pantone for those who still want puddings. Chocolates to finish.
