Off to the shops this morning to pick up something for tomorrows dinner. What do you eat for dinner on New Years day?

I'd like to do roast lamb but lamb is so expensive!

Steak Pie. I’m Scottish.

@Harperweek Ditto. Unthinkable to have nothing else.

BlueKaftan · 31/12/2022 14:53

We’re having chicken and sausage gumbo. 😋

StickofVeg · 31/12/2022 15:11

There is only me... so I've gone for a steak and stir fried veg followed by fresh cherries.

SingingSands · 31/12/2022 15:11

Ham, egg and chips tonight and roast chicken dinner tomorrow.

I'd forgotten about the Scottish steak pie on NYD! (Ex-pat Scots in Yorkshire for 23 years!)

Enjoy yer pies everyone! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Steak and Sausage pie here, Scottish DH

Babyroobs · 31/12/2022 15:12

Same as Xmas day minus the beef ! Turkey crown, cauliflower cheese, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes etc

Always4Brenner · 31/12/2022 15:14

Forgive me being ignorant but what’s the thing about steak pie if Scottish I love steak pie.

onthego24 · 31/12/2022 15:17

It will be a take away for us! Never have the energy to cook!

3peassuit · 31/12/2022 15:20

Beef casserole with roast potatoes washed down with a good red then we’ll finish off the Christmas cake.

KillingLoneliness · 31/12/2022 15:23

Whatever is in the fridge!

user58202018484482910ugog19293843910 · 31/12/2022 15:24

We're having a slow cooked ham with mash, sprouts and other veg.

The kids are having steak pie. I would have made steak pie for everyone but I had a ham in the freezer and I need the space.

Tomeeornottomee · 31/12/2022 15:24

we usually have a roast but it's just DH & I this year so making a lasagne, followed by a no bake fridge cake. As a kid in Scotland we always had homemade steak pie and mum and gran would always put sausages in it.. but only at new year.

hanahsaunt · 31/12/2022 15:27

Steak pie - it's the rule! Even though we have lived in England for ten years - the struggle is real in terms of getting a decent one big enough 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

MrsBartlet · 31/12/2022 15:27

Steak pie here too! I am in my fifties and have lived in England since I was 10 but as I am Scottish it has to be steak pie Smile

mothermacca · 31/12/2022 15:28

Roast beef dinner and chocolate cake and cream for dessert

AmazonianAvatar · 31/12/2022 15:36

A rump steak each for everyone except me (veggie) with garlicky sauteed new pots, roasted veg and broccoli. Tropical roulade for dessert. Try to start the first meal of the New Year as we hope the year ahead pans out!

StrawberryWater · 31/12/2022 15:36

Roast chicken tomorrow with apple pie and custard for pudding.

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2022 15:59

Duck legs, carrots and tinned cannellini beans. It's like a cassoulet but not too much for two. I got duck legs reduced to 44p for two!! in the summer when the weather was insanely hot. I couldn't face eating a stew then but bided my time.

I'm so looking forward to it with some braised savoy cabbage. It's the perfect thing for a cold, miserable day. The carrots were 19p for a kilo bag which cheers me up too. I'm going to liven it up with a sprinkling of parsley, raw garlic and lemon zest chopped small.

Here it is:

Like you @Theneverendingdrama I love roast lamb but it's expensive and too big for two people so we have chops or cubed lamb in casseroles. My mum, who died nine years ago, cooked fabulous roast leg of lamb and I grew up thinking it was the best - far superior to shoulder because she always told me it was. I feel like a traitor for saying this but my MIL cooks shoulder and it's great. Not better than my mum's, different but just as great. I'm looking forward to Easter at her house but in the meantime, happy new year.

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2022 16:12

Really looking forward to it and we are cooking far too much just so we can have bubble and squeek on Monday! Probably enough to freeze some for future bubble and squeek too!

I did this last week @mydogisthebest. We had roast beef for Christmas dinner and I did loads of extra potatoes, yorkshires, sprouts, carrots and some peas from the freezer to have with cold beef on Boxing Day.

DogInATent · 31/12/2022 16:14

A piece of beef that I've had marinating the last fortnight.

Sereyah · 31/12/2022 16:19

Sunday lunch out and a full blitz of the house this evening. Washing on top of, cleaning all done and a full declutter ready for the new year

Cincinnatus · 31/12/2022 16:20

Slow cooked beef with roast potatoes etc. Then brownie and ice cream for pudding.

CornishGem1975 · 31/12/2022 16:21

We're having our full Christmas dinner tomorrow (blended family, didn't have one last weekend).

RoomOnTheBrooms · 31/12/2022 16:22

Slow cooked beef casserole, served with veg and beef dripping potatoes in a large Yorkie. I'm 🤤 just thinking about it.

Wooltongirl · 31/12/2022 16:22

Didn’t know steak pie was traditional at New Year! Am doing chicken tikka masala and paneer curry as have 13 for lunch and wanted things I could make in advance. Lamb sounds lovely 😊
