How many days off from work over Christmas?

Read lots of posts on here people saying they are looking forward to a nice break over Christmas.
How long do you have off? Do you have to book leave?
I work shifts. They've fallen ok just before Christmas so I break up on 21st but then I'm back in on period between Christmas & New Year.

I’ve booked holiday over Christmas, so will finish on the 21st and back on 9th Jan. DH doesn’t have quite as long off, will be off from the 23rd until the 3rd Jan. Neither of us work in roles where our A/L impacts on colleagues, so thankfully that’s not an issue either. I’m really looking forward to it.

I'm on maternity leave with a 5 month old but my partner only gets Christmas and boxing day off it's a joke.

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 10:39

I'm off 23rd to 4th Jan. only needed a couple of days holiday to get that.

B1993 · 10/12/2022 10:41

I’m a teacher so get the school hols off. This year they fall from 22nd Dec - 3rd Jan.

kikisparks · 10/12/2022 10:45

In Scotland and I don’t work Wednesdays so 2 days annual leave means I finish up on 23rd and am back on 5th. My husband rarely gets time off at Christmas but he does this year and DD is going to be 14 months so a lot more aware than last year, can’t wait.

RhubarbFairy · 10/12/2022 10:46

I work in a school so I finish on the 16th and return on the 3rd. DH gets lots of annual leave so usually books the same period off with the DC and I, plus a couple of days after we go back for some days to himself before doing the afternoon school run.

MuthaHubbard · 10/12/2022 10:48

Last job would have been back in on the 28th.
New job 'closes' Xmas Eve and not back in until 3rd which is a nice change

Gamerlady · 10/12/2022 10:48

I work in retail.. only Christmas day off for me

Bookaholic73 · 10/12/2022 10:49

Retail, so I only have off Christmas Day.

Nofilter · 10/12/2022 10:52

Work from home but it's not a hands on business so we're off when DD finishes school Christmas carols at 12 midday on Wednesday until Jan 10th. Booked a holiday we've not been away in 3 years cannot wait but life won't change much for us really apart from the holiday.

We have animals and I'm a lone parent so will just be the same "workload" so to speak.

Forgetmenot36 · 10/12/2022 10:54

HEI and last day is 22 Dec... Then the uni is closed (we get discretionary, basically extra, days leave) until Tuesday 3 Jan. DH is at another HEI and his last day is Tuesday 20 Dec! Works out quite well for the school holidays.

Previous job (NDPB), the organisation was closed between Christmas and NY, but we had to use either three days of annual or flexi to cover it.

Job before that (non-frontline emergency services) was obviously open and it was a choice whether we worked it or took leave. I usually worked it as it was so quiet.

Womencanlift · 10/12/2022 10:55

Even though I am in a team my leave doesn’t impact anyone else so I can choose what I want so I always take the full two weeks. This year finish on the 20th and back on the 4th

Last year I worked the week in between as I wanted to save the days for a break I was taking in February. Will never do that again if I can help it

We also get a Christmas shopping day as a bonus in December so that meant I could take an extra day

forevercooking · 10/12/2022 10:56

I work 4 days a week. I've booked 2 days off to be off from when I finish (early) on 23rd and go back 3rd January

FettleOfKish · 10/12/2022 10:57

Our office closes midday 23rd to the 28th, but I've taken leave between Christmas and New Year and a couple of days after as we're going away, so 12 and a half days off for me.

Pelo2022 · 10/12/2022 10:57

Off the 24/25/26/27 and then 31/01/02
Working 28/29/30

So 4 days

gamerchick · 10/12/2022 10:57

I don't work weekends anyway but do have the 26, 27 and 28th off which is nice.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 10/12/2022 10:58

This year, I'm finishing lunchtime on the 22nd, back on thr 3rd. Unusual for me. Usually go in between Xmas and New year

FourChimneys · 10/12/2022 11:08

I run my own business. Somewhere between 14 and 16 days, not quite decided yet. I'll probably do bits of admin at odd times and think about my tax return.

Withnoshoes · 10/12/2022 11:12

I don’t get any leave the two weeks of Christmas as work on a ward and we aren’t allowed to take leave. I’m working a good chunk of it including Christmas Eve and day but have two days off together the week after. Is what it is. Done for many years now. Do feel a bit jealous when people including my fella, friends and sibling finish for a week or more

FinallyHere · 10/12/2022 11:15

Taking four days annual leave, I'm currently due off for eleven consecutive days, from Friday, 23rd Dec to Tuesday, 4th January.

Thinking of taking a couple more days off, but not decided yet. Enjoy my job, so will only take more days off if some of the people we are hoping to meet up with are not back until the first week in January.

Santasjingleballs · 10/12/2022 11:33

Off between the 19th dec-7th jan

popandchoc · 10/12/2022 11:36

My last day is Thurs 22nd and then back Tues 3rd. Haven't had to book any days off as office closed and i don't work fridays.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/12/2022 11:38

I finish on 15th Dec, back in on 3rd Jan - I can't wait!

It's been the shittest of years (at work and home) so this long Christmas break cannot come soon enough...

QuietOne121 · 10/12/2022 11:39

15th December - 3rd January. Can’t wait!

Wincher · 10/12/2022 11:42

My work gives us three extra days off between Christmas and new year, and I’ve taken the week before off, and an extra day after as kids have an extra day. So I’m off from the 16th until 4 Jan. Can’t wait!
