How many days off from work over Christmas?

Read lots of posts on here people saying they are looking forward to a nice break over Christmas.
How long do you have off? Do you have to book leave?
I work shifts. They've fallen ok just before Christmas so I break up on 21st but then I'm back in on period between Christmas & New Year.

Husbands work closes from 23rd to the 3rd and his annual leave is deducted by 4 at the start of the year to accommodate it. I am civil service but not front line so have requested the same time off so we can spend it together. My team will operate with a skeleton staff comprised of those who didn’t want leave over the period and/or have run out leave to take. In every CS job I’ve had I’ve been able to take the leave I wanted at Christmas time through the same sort of arrangement.

We were given the time between Xmas and new year off as a xmas benefit.

It came instead of a big party as it was considered inappropriate this year - we have a sister office in China and they are still in lock down.

I'd rather have the time off tbh.

gogohmm · 10/12/2022 08:56

Oh and dp, he's "working from home" due to running out of leave, not a lot of work will be done

We are closed but we still have to take it as holiday. Do you get paid?

Yes, it's a lovely bonus! They only started closing the office in 2020 to make sure everyone took a break while WFH - previously we did have to use holiday but almost no-one worked.

mynameiscalypso · 10/12/2022 08:57

My office is closed between Christmas and New Year - we get the days off as a perk and they don't come out of our holiday allowance. I'm off the week before Christmas as well for childcare reasons but will log in to do a few bits and pieces when I can.

Pythonese · 10/12/2022 08:59

NHS, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. First time in three years. And yes, I have three kids.

pilates · 10/12/2022 08:59

Used some holiday and so have 3 weeks. Not had much time off this year so looking forward to it.

Inapicklee · 10/12/2022 08:59

My job never stops including bank holidays/Christmas day.

Happily now I’m in a department where we can have a skeleton staff over bank holidays. I’m off from 22nd then back in 27th. Can’t bloody wait, feel tired and burned out and havnt had leave for what feels like a very long time!

EarringsandLipstick · 10/12/2022 09:03

I work in a university. We have to close (and take annual leave) from 21 December - 02 January which works out at 5 days leave & BH added on.

I'm going to take the first week of January off too, I've a lot to do so have quite a few plans. I can't wait for the break, it's been an exhausting few months.

I just need to get through a very busy week next week; I'm working the following week but most of my team are taking leave so it will be quieter and I hope to make some plans and catch up on work tasks uncompleted.

CaptainMerica · 10/12/2022 09:03

I finish on the 23rd, back on the 9th. There is no childcare available in the school xmas holidays round here, so we need to have enough leave left to cover it.

I'll be oncall for a day in between Xmas and New year for work - I.e. if anything comes up at work, someone can phone me and I'll log on to sort it out.

Most people in my office want to take a full fortnight, so we usually have a meeting to look at everyone's dates, and make sure someone is at least monitoring emails each non-bank holiday day. My boss normally offers if no one else is available.

Minniem2020 · 10/12/2022 09:06

I'm on mat leave but normally I'd be off Xmas Eve, Xmas day and boxing day then back in. Then off the 1st January. I'm planning on enjoying being off the whole way through this year.

trailerandtractor · 10/12/2022 09:09

Used to have just Christmas Day and Boxing Day off but never enjoyed it, as always thinking about returning to work. I now take the whole xmas period off, but I’m self employed so don’t get paid. However I don’t take much time off across the year so I think I deserve it.

Menopausecankissmyass · 10/12/2022 09:10

Finish on 23rd and back in on the 3rd.
My company closes over Christmas holidays

lap90 · 10/12/2022 09:13

Two weeks off that doesn't come out of our annual leave.

123woop · 10/12/2022 09:14

Me and DH have three weeks this year due to how it falls!

stargirl1701 · 10/12/2022 09:16

I'm off from the 22nd Dec and back to work on the 9th Jan.

LBOCS2 · 10/12/2022 09:19

The office is shut between the 23rd and the 3rd, we're getting the time off as a bonus - no holiday needed and fully paid. Very much looking forward to it!

Soccermumamir · 10/12/2022 09:20

Both myself and OH are term time so finish on 16th and go back on 3rd 🙂

Lolly34h · 10/12/2022 09:21

I break up today till the 3rd but the first week is annual leave. However I work in school clothing retail so no one wants to buy it this close to Christmas

JolieJ · 10/12/2022 09:23

I always save extra holidays for December so I'm officially on holiday from today till Jan 3rd!

Dougieowner · 10/12/2022 09:23

Off from Fri 23rd to Tues 3rd, really looking forward to it. 😁
OH works weekends so is in Christmas Eve & Day plus NY Eve & Day. Means I will be on my lonesome those days but we will celebrate on 26th. 🥳

NurseryNurse10 · 10/12/2022 09:25

I will probably end up with 3 weeks off. I choose my hours as am agency. Feel a bit wrong about so much time off but don't want to get unwell over Christmas and have had enough for the year if I am honest.

AzureOrchid · 10/12/2022 09:25

DP only has Christmas Day off
I have a 9 day break , just with the way my shifts work in , that’s not normal at all , but will make the most of it.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 10/12/2022 09:25

I finished on 30th November and will go back Jan 5th. My oh finishes Tuesday till 10th january we always save our leave for December as it makes the best use of if with bank holidays and how it falls this year particularly.

Cuddlywuddlies · 10/12/2022 09:31

I’m a 9-5 Mon-Fri so we are finishing on Friday 23rd early….but still paid a full day
then we are off 26th obvs because it’s a bank hol and 27th in lieu of Christmas being the Sunday. Then for the 28th, 29th, 30th we have all opted to work one of those days. We will come in and get the absolute minimum done and leave early (still get paid a full day) so im in on the 29th and then we’re back on the 2nd but I’m off until Jan 5th and I’m only using 4 days A/L which is fab!
