How many days off from work over Christmas?

Read lots of posts on here people saying they are looking forward to a nice break over Christmas.
How long do you have off? Do you have to book leave?
I work shifts. They've fallen ok just before Christmas so I break up on 21st but then I'm back in on period between Christmas & New Year.

Finish work on Christmas Eve, back in on the 27th. I work in hospitality but leaving early Jan as business is closing. I can't fucking wait! Working Christmas Eve is a stressfest. Customers can be arseholes who get shitty when you want to close because they want to have a nice time with their family, yeah well so do I. Definitely time to get out of hospitality. I'm so jealous of people who get a proper break over Christmas!

I work at a university and we get the 23rd Dec to the 3rd Jan off fully paid and on top of our holiday allowance.

sleepylittlebunnies · 10/12/2022 09:34

I’m working 12.5 hour night shifts 20th, 22nd and Christmas Eve, finish at 07.30 Christmas Day. I will be exhausted but it’s better than missing the day altogether. I’m off until 30th and working New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day night shifts.

I work in a care home and policy is no annual leave Christmas or new year weeks. We put our requests but don’t always get them, hence working Christmas Eve. I’m more likely to get what I request next year though. Luckily DH finishes early on 23rd and goes back 2nd January by using 3 AL days.

on years like this the bank holidays are enough for me

I very rarely book leave between Xmas and new year. If I did I would really do very little, just sat around the house, perhaps seeing some less close family. I save the annual leave for when the weather is good to do stuff outside or to travel on holiday.

Work is usually very quiet too and often very few bosses in so nobody really checking on you. I work from home so will be mainly just doing a few small admin tasks, completing any training that is coming due and wiggling the mouse to remain ‘online’ whilst I watch tv or play video games

Work shuts on the 23rd dec and reopens on the 3rd jan.

Greyskyblue · 10/12/2022 09:43

Civil service so just the statutory holidays!

RadFad · 10/12/2022 09:46

I've taken annual leave from 19th-23rd as DD school break up end of next week.
My job is closed on bank holidays. I will then work the Wednesday and Thursday between Christmas and New Year and then off again until 4th Jan as I don't work on Tuesdays or Fridays.

DH last day is 23rd and then off until the 3rd. He uses annual leave for the 3 days between Christmas and New Year. It's their company policy.

kitcat15 · 10/12/2022 09:46

Finish on 21st til 27th.......in 28th and 29th......then off till the 3rd ......I get bank hols off anyway......we need 4 qualified staff in ( we have 14cqualified on team) ....so with a bit of give and take its not hard to accommodate everyone

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/12/2022 09:48

My last day is the 14th then I'm off until January 3rd.

I save my annual leave for Christmas, though.

Justcallmebebes · 10/12/2022 09:49

Legal. We close 1pm on 23rd and reopen on 3rd. Fully paid and not taken from holiday allowance.

Only bonus in my crappy job

FfeminyddCymraeg · 10/12/2022 09:50

Off from the 23rd to the 3rd, combination of extra gifted leave and mandatory holidays.

I love everybody else being off because it means I don’t have to keep an eye on my emails.

elevenplusdilemma · 10/12/2022 09:50

Mummyboy1 · 10/12/2022 08:18

My work is closing the 16th of December and isn't open till the 3rd... so it's a bit rubbish for money.

Don't you get paid annual leave?

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/12/2022 09:52

Not overly bothered about Christmas per se, but need a break after working solidly all year! We shut for two weeks and I am taking another, so three weeks off - never done it before and cannot wait!

NightIbble · 10/12/2022 09:54

I work retail but I'm lucky as I have Christmas Eve (booked in Jan) Christmas Day and Boxing Day off!

Maverickess · 10/12/2022 09:58

Only normal days off in December, no AL requests are allowed, working all the main days as is just about everyone else - hospitality, so we're open for everyone else who's off work 😂 all part of hospitality, but I do hope the arseholes and professional complainers stay at home this year!

beguilingeyes · 10/12/2022 09:58

I worked in banking my whole life. Christmas day, Boxing Day, New Years day, that's it always, and quite often worked Boxing Day as the US is open.

RewildingAmbridge · 10/12/2022 10:00

I work full time but not weekends or bank holidays. I often work between Christmas and New year, but both of my peer colleagues are in this year and are choosing to be, one is on holiday now and the other flies out the day after NYD so they don't want to use leave between Christmas and New year which had left it clear for me so I'm off from Friday 23rd back jan 3rd I have to use 3 days annual leave to get that time off

WimbyAce · 10/12/2022 10:04

I work part time and a lot of rhe bank hols fall on my working days (taken out of my leave allowance) so I've only taken a couple of extra days and off for 2 weeks. Can't wait for the break!

BrokenWing · 10/12/2022 10:05

Last day Friday 23rd and back on Tuesday 3rd. A short one for me this year, but days either side of it will be quiet (no back to back calls, less emails) as most of project team is off and I'm looking forward to bring able to clear a load of outstanding work. I'll be WFH too so can be flexible when I work.

Saving days for some time I need off later in January.

AclowncalledAlice · 10/12/2022 10:11

Finish at 2pm on the Friday (because I don't work weekends), back at 2pm Boxing Day. Finish at 10pm on the Friday. Supposed to be back at 10pm on New Year's night but have A/L until the Wednesday.

AclowncalledAlice · 10/12/2022 10:13

We don't shut for Bank Holidays, the only time the factory is shut is between 6am Christmas morning until 6 am Boxing day.

blueflagflyhigh · 10/12/2022 10:18

I'm finishing on 16th December and will be back 4th Jan. I am officially due back 5th jan but I'm part time and i work in finance and it's month end, so I'll swap my Thursday and work the Wednesday instead.

I've never had that long off before but got so many holidays to take 😃 kids don't finish school until 23rd at 2pm so be good to get things organised while they jot in the house!

TheFeistyFeminist · 10/12/2022 10:21

I'm part time. By booking two days leave I finish on 23rd and don't go back till 3rd. That's good enough for me.

StEval · 10/12/2022 10:28

5 days over Christmas and 5 over NY.
I've taken the whole 2 weeks before and get a bit bored tbh and also everyone else is off and in the way 😂
As I'm PT I've only taken 2 days leave so can save it for nicer weather .

makingmiracles · 10/12/2022 10:31

xmas eve and Xmas day, but they fall on Wk end and I don’t work at Wk ends, expected back in Boxing Day and I get New Year’s Eve off, that’s it, anything else I’d need to book holiday for 🫤
