How many days off from work over Christmas?

Read lots of posts on here people saying they are looking forward to a nice break over Christmas.
How long do you have off? Do you have to book leave?
I work shifts. They've fallen ok just before Christmas so I break up on 21st but then I'm back in on period between Christmas & New Year.

My work closes over Christmas so I finish on the 23rd then not back in until the 3rd Jan

By coincidence every full time job I've ever done has had a Christmas shutdown so I've been really lucky not to have had to work over Christmas ever since I left the part time retail job I had when I was about 19/20

closingscore · 10/12/2022 11:48

I'm freelance so I'm finishing about 22nd and going back to it around 6th Jan.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/12/2022 11:52

Not quite the same, but finished my last job at the end of November, aside from a couple of random hand over days, I start my new role mid Jan.
Six weeks😊

Bpdqueen · 10/12/2022 11:57

1 day retail

Londonnight · 10/12/2022 12:04

I work in a hospital , so obviously that never closes. I am working Christmas Eve and then off until 4 Jan. I have to take this as annual leave.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 10/12/2022 12:09

Finish late on 24th - back on 27th lunchtime.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 10/12/2022 12:15

I work in education so finish 16th and back 3rd January. Looking forward to the break as it has been a tough term.

Cornelious · 10/12/2022 12:21

I work TTO (not in a school) so follow my dc school schedule. I finish on 16th Dec and don't go back until 5th Jan. I work PT also so don't work start of the week.

skyeisthelimit · 10/12/2022 12:22

I'm self employed, so I am closing my office from 23 December to 2 January,

I also need a complete break before the madness of January as I will work every single day then from 3 January to 7 February without a day off. I will probably end up working a couple of days between Christmas and New Year, but I get so much more done when not having to deal with client emails and phone calls and can work the hours I choose .

daisybrown37 · 10/12/2022 12:34

My office is shut between Christmas and New Year, so have to take leave to cover these days. Booked 21st-23rd off as well. It will be quiet that week any way as we work with schools and there will not be many school staff in that week.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/12/2022 12:41

I'm a teacher. This year we break up on the 23rd and have the usual full 2 weeks off.

DH's work has a Christmas shutdown too every year. He'll finish on the 22nd (does 4 long days and doesn't work Fridays) and then go back on the 2nd.

I'm looking forward to a full week off on my own while he's back at work as I'll be wanting to spring clean once all the decs go down, and I prefer getting stuck into jobs like that when he's not underfoot.

PumpkinPie2016 · 10/12/2022 13:10

I'm a teacher so very lucky to have 2 full weeks. I finish on the 16th and go back on the 3rd. Same as DS school which is nice.

I have done plenty of working over Christmas in my younger days when I waitressed though!

Whattheduck · 10/12/2022 13:15

I finish on the 23rd then back on the 29th as I don’t work Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s.

gingercat02 · 10/12/2022 13:28

I'm off for the whole 2 weeks (22nd to 9th) which never happens in the NHS but I'm starting a new job in January. So excited.

PinkStarAtNight · 10/12/2022 13:40

I work in an office type/call centre job that honours bank holidays so we get all those, plus three 'company days' for Christmas which isn't part of AL. However, few of us get to take all the three days off over Christmas. I've been allowed to use one of mine for the Christmas period and can take the other two in the new year anytime before March.

So for Christmas I finish work on the day before Christmas eve, then off for 4 days, back in work for 2 days then off for another 4 days for new year and back permanently on 3rd Jan. I'm a bit disappointed that I don't even get a full week off together, but its better than previous jobs I've had where I've had to work christmas eve, new years eve and new years day. (Retail)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/12/2022 13:45

DP finishes on the 17th and back on the 3rd.

The site closes on the 21st/half day although unlike the twit in a meeting who claimed no work is done for those two days, there will be plenty to do and I might escape by normal finishing time and back on the 5th. But there's a very good chance that I'll be working at home for most of it.

Seeing as I've been doing somewhere in the region of 40-50 hours overtime a month and last time I had a day off was in mid August (so much for leave entitlement, other people made decisions that meant I had to give it up), I'm not entirely amused by this state off affairs.

RuthW · 10/12/2022 13:58

Just weekends and bank hols. Not too bad this year.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 10/12/2022 14:07

Finish 22nd Dec, back 11th Jan

MrsKrankyPants · 10/12/2022 16:37

I try and get 2 weeks off with AL always need less AL with BH's in between. I like 2 weeks off at Christmas / New Year.

TribeD · 10/12/2022 18:24

Finish on 16th, back on 6th. Very lucky to have a substantial break and I'm looking forward to it.

Tamtam86 · 10/12/2022 18:59

I changed jobs this year and for the first time in my whole career I'm having two weeks off - finishing the 16th and back in on the 3rd, I'm using annual leave but everyone is encouraged to take their leave during school holidays so pretty much the whole company has two weeks off. I can't wait!

In my last job it was always done so the office would be covered (retail head office), I would usually try to take off Xmas eve and then work one or two of the days on between, so not bad at all but would never have been able to take off two weeks so I'm feeling very lucky this year!

CrinchyGrinchy · 10/12/2022 19:37

I usually take 2-3 weeks off over Christmas and New Years. This year I'm off from the 14 Dec - 3 Jan. I don't know why I do it, but I generally get sick of my husband and family by Boxing Day and wish I had the excuse to leave to go to work. But I've gone and booked a long annual leave again this year Confused

Susiesue61 · 10/12/2022 19:53

In on the 23rd, should be off for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but someone is now off so will offer to cover Christmas Eve morning. Then I'm in in 26th, off 27 th, in till New Year's Eve and back in on Monday 2nd 😊
Lucky I love my job 😂

Chickydoo · 10/12/2022 20:07

Self employed
I have Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & Boxing Day.
Would love a bit more time off with family, it's just not to be. :(

BearSoFair · 10/12/2022 21:18

I'm off the 23rd, early finish Xmas Eve, off Christmas and Boxing Day. Haven't got the rota for the following week yet but I know I'm in New Year's Day as I'm supervisor and my manager has it booked off.
