How many days off from work over Christmas?

Read lots of posts on here people saying they are looking forward to a nice break over Christmas.
How long do you have off? Do you have to book leave?
I work shifts. They've fallen ok just before Christmas so I break up on 21st but then I'm back in on period between Christmas & New Year.

25th, 26th, 27th. Retail hell.

JaceLancs · 10/12/2022 22:11

We are off this year from 4.30 on 23rd till 9.00 on 3rd January
I will check emails and voice mail remotely between Xmas and new year and deal with anything urgent which normally takes 1-2 hours a day but I am the boss and everyone else gets the full break

minimadgirl · 10/12/2022 23:27

Nhs, so I have Christmas Day off this year but only as its my turn to have it off. Back in Boxing Day.
Christmas week is just a normal week, no different at all to normal except there's less Admin staff in the offices.

Retail management here 🙋🏻‍♀️ for the first year in 16 years, I’m off Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day 😁 and I can’t bloody wait 🤣

cravingmilkshake · 11/12/2022 04:23

I finished on Wednesday just gone and not back until 3rd ! Stack load of accrued annual leave to take!

maddiemookins16mum · 11/12/2022 05:19

Last day the 23rd, back in in the 3rd Jan. Our office has skeleton staff working during the time between Christmas/New Year.

Nugg · 11/12/2022 05:31

Only BHs off. And I'm lucky really. Christmas doesn't really exist in the Emergency services

HowCanIPayItForward · 11/12/2022 05:40

My company closes on the 3 working days between Christmas and New Year. We're paid for them but it comes out of our annual leave. I've booked a couple of days beforehand off too so finidh on 21st, return on 2nd Jan.

garlictwist · 11/12/2022 05:43

I finish on 23 December and am back on 3 Jan. Our work closes down but the leave is deducted from our allowance so we have to take leave then. I would rather work and save my holiday for the summer but hey ho.

Lolly86 · 11/12/2022 05:46

Finish nights on 23rd morning on a late on call shift Christmas day, then nights 29th and 30th and again nights 1st Jan
Nurse 😊

magicthree · 11/12/2022 05:50

I finish on the 23rd and we are closed until January 9th - hooray!!!! Four days stat. hols and the rest annual leave.

user1487194234 · 11/12/2022 05:51

Stop at lunchtime on 23rd
Back on 5th January
Cant wait

kegofcoffee · 11/12/2022 06:07

I'm surprised so many people have so many days off.

Would be interesting to know much of it is using annual leave allowance and how much is business closure?!

I've never worked in an office that closes (they could but they don't). So it's work Christmas Eve and then back the day after Boxing Day. Or use some of your 20 days annual leave.

I was offered a job somewhere that did this.

They gave you the minimum 20 days a year holiday, then made you use 6 days over Christmas for the office closure. Leaving you with 14 days holiday for the year.

For us it comes out of annual leave. The business is closed. But we have to save the days. However, some people in finance do work and use those days at other times. They come in and catch up on work.

I expect others could, if they really need to. But also we get fairly generous annual leave 30 days plus bank holidays. We tend to need 3 or 4 for Christmas. So it would still leave us with 26/27 days plus bank holidays for the year.

The reason for the more generous leave is for the Christmas shut down.

Tanfastic · 11/12/2022 06:27

I'm off from the 23rd until the 27th but that's only because it's fallen very generously this year.

Tanfastic · 11/12/2022 06:27

We are only allowed to use 1 day annual leave over Xmas.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 11/12/2022 06:34

I'm on maternity leave but usually I'd have to book well in advance. We don't work BH and it wouldn't be too difficult to get several days off over Xmas & NY. I hate working throughout as the train/bus services are so shit for my commute.

My DP works shifts (emergency services) and has got Christmas Day and Eve off this year but is back on shift Boxing Day up to new year.

theyoungishman · 11/12/2022 06:52

I finished on 16 December and back on 13 January... cannot bloody wait

trampoline123 · 11/12/2022 06:53

We've got 23rd to 26th off. I've booked from the 21st, 22nd off as leave as the childminder is off.

BakewellGin1 · 11/12/2022 06:54

Break up Tuesday 20th and return Wednesday 4th... I didn't think it through in advance or I would have booked 19th and 20th off completely.

Pictograph · 11/12/2022 06:58

I work at a university. I'm working up to 23 Dec. It's closed from 26 Dec to 2 Jan, and then I'm taking 3 days of annual leave (3-5 Jan). Back to work on 6 Jan. Nearly 2 weeks off - yay!

sashh · 11/12/2022 07:32

My first job we had to keep 3 days annual leave for between Christmas and New Year.

Then I worked for the NHS so only got the 2 days bank holidays, but that's fine because it was quiet.

I did do on call over Xmas as well.

FaoinDrualus · 11/12/2022 07:39

I finish on the 16th, back on the 2nd.
Work are giving the 23rd, 27th and 30th as holidays, and I'm taking 7 days of leave.

Figgygal · 11/12/2022 07:40

19th December to 3rd Jan
Can't wait
