The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

OMG I have just accidentally showed DD the spoof version. Be careful what you google!

I. Have. just. shown. the roast penguin version... To a 5 year old. Nooooooooooooo

SundaeGirl · 06/11/2014 21:18

Yeah, I cried. But that's not saying much since my sob-bar is set low.

SolidGoldBrass · 06/11/2014 21:40

Oh they are both shit. THe penguin one, not only mail order bride but also, you can't be happy unless you are in a couple - what a great message to send kids...

And the boots one? FFS if I had just done a night shift I would want to go to bed, not have to entertain the whole bloddy family.

Postchildrenpregranny · 06/11/2014 21:44

My penguin loving daughter is 25...I think the Ikea one is in the attic . Open to offers. ..
Nice ad though . But do JL (and M and S who presumably have one due) really think their ads make us rush there and spend more? If you have a local JL you probably use them anyway...if not, you can't

Postchildrenpregranny · 06/11/2014 21:45

A spoof version? Must find it.

magicpixie · 06/11/2014 21:46

no not feeling it at all

not even a hint of a tear for me and I'm normally a big baby

I do looooove jl though

Postchildrenpregranny · 06/11/2014 21:54

Have considered writing to the CEOs of JL et al and telling them if they donated the money (mega bucks??) they spend on these ads to a childrens' charitty I'd be
far more likely to spend money with them

FixItUpChappie · 06/11/2014 21:59

oh that is so sweet. God I'm a sop

BOFster · 06/11/2014 22:06

Here's one spoof.

BOFster · 06/11/2014 22:10

Going back to Trismas and her impression of friendship rather than romance, I would say that the woman and daughter on the bench at the lake are meant to be the boy's mother and his teenage sister. The penguin doesn't appear to look longingly at them, anyway. I'm not 100% sure but I think it's the same woman who appears right at the end, and you can just see a teenage girl on the stairs behind her.

MyMelody · 06/11/2014 22:18

Yes I agree, it's his mum and older sister, they are on the bus as well, and the sister seems to be having teenage dramas and the mum is always listening wearily and sympathetically.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 06/11/2014 22:19

Schmaltz. Bah Humbug. 7 more weeks of these things. Think I will stop watching commercial TV.

Moln · 06/11/2014 22:20

JL one didn't do anything for me - though Boot's one did manage to muster up a bit of emotion - though I've worked Christmas before and not been with my family and had them come together and make an effort to make Christmas special for me so I imagine it's more that!!

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 06/11/2014 22:21

The horror version is very good.

Seriously, I watched the whole thing thinking, oh this is v cute, but blubbing? Then the scruffy toy penguin was shown - and that was it! I was blubbing.

It's that velveteen rabbit thing about a very well loved child's toy I think.

MyMelody · 06/11/2014 22:21

Also, I don't think it's a dig at single parents, there is clearly a dad sat on the sofa watching the movie with them (blink and you miss him though).

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 06/11/2014 22:23

The Dad also was decorating the tree,]

BOy is too young for TV in bedroom.

MyMelody · 06/11/2014 22:32

The advert is designed so that lots of people relate to it in different ways, for some reason the shot at the beginning where he is lying on the floor with the lego really got to me and sucked me in, I was then totally in bits by the end.

frankietwospots · 06/11/2014 23:04

Loved it and yes, I welled up. My nearly three year old DS said 'The penguin just wants a kiss'. And we both laughed when he snaffled the sausage.

yumyumpoppycat · 06/11/2014 23:08

I also thought it was dreary bar the last seconds, 'real' penguin was getting on my nerves.

PedantMarina · 06/11/2014 23:26

The stuffed animal who's only alive when other people aren't looking isn't a new idea. Don't know if anybody's familiar with Calvin and Hobbes?

That out of the way, I stand amongst the blubbering mess populace. Blush Anybody spot that the Christmas film was It's a Wonderful Life? Here's me, mush on the sofa.

BOFster · 06/11/2014 23:40

It wasn't It's A Wonderful Life, I don't think.

MindReader · 06/11/2014 23:55

Loving the spoofs.....

Roast Penguin, Horror Penguin, Penguin Voice Over but most of all,
Penguin Rights one... Grin

AGnu · 06/11/2014 23:57

DH thinks it's sweet. I was expecting him to give the penguin to a zoo so it could have some company, not get a mail-order bride. Hmm

MindReader · 06/11/2014 23:57

YouTube Happy Toast - loads of silly Penguin commentary vids.

Happy Times. Grin

AGnu · 07/11/2014 00:00

This one had me in tears though... Grin
