The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

Seriously, £95 for a toy penguin?!

MyMelody · 07/11/2014 17:04

I can't work in out BOF and can't find it written anywhere, who do we think the actress is? I thought maybe Barbara Stanwyck but not sure??

PavlovtheCat · 07/11/2014 18:35

It's nice, but, it's still an advert. And an advert that is, of course designed to have us rushing to by penguins and all other things JL is not going to make me cry. It doesn't mean anything.

PavlovtheCat · 07/11/2014 18:37

guitar see, you are exactly the person they are marketing to. And it worked. You bought the penguin, and more too. And it's only the beginning of November. Good work JL, they have you in the palm of their hand.

ChocolateWombat · 07/11/2014 18:41

I had to watch it twice to fully get it. On first viewing, hadn't realised it was a lonely penguin, longing for love.
Thought it was clever for pulling at our heart strings. It did make DS want to get his toy penguin out....so we won't be buying one. Not sure it will make me want to buy my Christmas stuff in JL, but I did enjoy the advert. No weeping though.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 18:44

She's definitely got a look of Barbara Stanwyk, but I can't swear to it. It's driving me crazy Grin

needyoumorethanwantyou · 07/11/2014 19:00

I genuinely cannot understand why people cry about this?. It's not moving or even particularly good. Am I missing something?.

I admit that I had a lump in my throat when I first saw the ad last Xmas where the kids were watching the video of Dad in the forces saying he wished he could be home and then he walked into the room.

But a lump in my throat the first time was all. No tears and certainly not 'tears streaming down my face'. And they were real people with real lives and not a CGI animal.

I really don't get it!.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 19:22

People thinking of It's A Wonderful Life are thinking of the embrace here at 3:21 onwards, but it's the the same as the scene shown in the advert.

Now THAT'S made me cry Grin

Lucyccfc · 07/11/2014 19:23

I don't get it either!

It's just an advert.

Have to admit it's very clever though judging my all the people on here who now want to buy a penguin. Clever marketing, hitting gullible people.

LightastheBreeze · 07/11/2014 19:32

I bought the two £12 penguins, actually they cost me £9 as I have a Partner card, they are sitting on the mantlepiece as i don't have a young child Grin. They were flying off the shelf and were sold out this afternoon. Some people have got theirs on Ebay already.

Itsfab · 07/11/2014 19:44

JL penguin on ebay for £499.

plinkyplonks · 07/11/2014 19:54

needyoumorethanwantyou - you're not alone. It was a good advert, but I usually find the JL Christmas ads overhyped and nothing particularly special!

Tallulaxx · 07/11/2014 20:43

Will they have them in stock again do you think?

LightastheBreeze · 07/11/2014 21:55

I can't see that JL has put their whole lot of penguins out in one go, there's probably a big warehouse somewhere, full of them. I bet they'll be back in in a week or two.

MatriarchalDreams · 07/11/2014 23:05

Have just realised that had I wanted to get DD some M and M nightwear (and been in time before they'd sold out!) I wouldn't have been able to - the sleepsuit only goes up to 12-18 months, which would be too small, and the pyjamas start at 2 years which would swamp her, where's the 18-24 month stuff John Lewis?! (and I didn't cry when I first watched it yesterday but was welling up when I showed it to DH in the evening. Must show DD tomorrow and see what she thinks of it)

GertiesNotDirty · 08/11/2014 07:20

needyoumorethanwantyou that ad got me every time I watched it, real lump in the throat stuff. JL one is sweet but not in the same league.

Tallulaxx · 08/11/2014 08:23

The penguines are back on the jl website be quick!!

Tallulaxx · 08/11/2014 08:24

Got mine had a voucher very excited :)

hiccupgirl · 08/11/2014 08:46

See adverts like this make me think I must just have no soul because I genuinely don't get the sentiment. I can see it's quite sweet but other than that I spent the whole thing trying to work out why on earth the kid had a real penguin and why no body had noticed. And at the end thought 'well that was lame'.

It was better than the JL one last year with the hideous cartoon animals and the bear that should have eaten them all for waking him up but other than that it was just an advert.

I will be turning over every time the Argos one comes on though...most irritating advert I've seen for ages.

lostlalaloopsy · 08/11/2014 09:03

I don't usually see the big fuss with JL adverts, but that one gave me a lump in my throat. Very lovely.

anonacfr · 08/11/2014 10:22

All I thought was penguin wants to get laid for Christmas.

Seriously the way he's staring at people snogging was quite creepy.

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 08/11/2014 11:32

Argh Argh Argh!

Were they really back in stock?

It's a penguin-free wasteland there now Sad

number1daddy · 08/11/2014 12:01

so JL just sell penguins now hehe

LeoandBoosmum · 08/11/2014 13:37

It's my favourite so far!

LillianGish · 08/11/2014 13:54

Thing is you don't actually have to go to JL to buy a stuffed penguin or anything else for that matter. Giving your kids (or anyone else for that matter) what that they really want for Christmas doesn't have to involve JL at all. I welled up, but more at the thought of the boy not having a sibling to play with (though other posters mentioned he might have a sister just out of shot).
