The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

I loved the ad.

The only bit where kid looked really self concious was at the end when he had the toy penguins!

And I want to know what happened to that fish finger if a penguin didn't drop it!

AmeliaPeabody · 07/11/2014 00:12

Hmm. No, not even a small tear. The penguin was very cute, granted.

PedantMarina · 07/11/2014 00:33

Damn, you're right BOFster. Looked like it, though - the bit where George and Mary finally get in a clinch whilst on the phone with Sam Wainwright.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 00:38

I adore that film too! I'm dying to find out where the clip they used is from now.

LittleBearPad · 07/11/2014 00:39

It's lovely and made me tearful. Dd has a toy cat. He is absolutely real to her, much like the penguin.

The film was a Its a Wonderful Life.

number1daddy · 07/11/2014 01:21

it was only an advert hehe

Thumbwitch · 07/11/2014 01:49

Totally reminded me of C&H - and thanks for that link re. the spoof final cartoon, Thinkaboutit, that was very interesting, especially the "remake" 26y later with Calvin's DD! Awww.

I love C&H.

The ad was cute, did make me a little teary; but not as much as the Boots one!

TheWholeOfTheSpook · 07/11/2014 03:03

It was crap! Although, for me, JL Xmas Ads were at the best when they did the one about the impatient boy who gives his sister's head for Xmas. That one was bloody brilliant.

HowsTheSerenity · 07/11/2014 08:05

I'm not crying. Honestly. IVe got something in my eye.....

MyballsareSandy · 07/11/2014 08:50

Middlings, you said you were pregnant with DD1, does that mean you went on to have more DCs?

BiddyPop · 07/11/2014 09:31

I should have known better than to look at this at work. Fortunately, I have to keep my head down typing a report for the next 10 minutes while I compose myself again, and I am reknowned for my allergies so sniffing won't be noticed.....

MyUserName22 · 07/11/2014 09:36

Ah, the poor little lonely penguin! Why does John Lewis do it to us?? Because they want us to give them our hard-earned dosh, that's why!! Don't be fooled people!

itwillbecold · 07/11/2014 09:40

Nope! Xmas Grin

Birra · 07/11/2014 10:47

M and S have some cute penguins for £12.50

Pawan · 07/11/2014 10:59

Think I prefer the wonderful Oliver Jeffers book of "lost and found" and the lovely - both of which never seemed to get the recognition they deserved. Wonder if that's where John Lewis got the idea?

OneSkinnyChip · 07/11/2014 11:23

Yep, another sniveller here. So glad I have found my people :o

OneSkinnyChip · 07/11/2014 11:25

And am now snivelling again remembering Calvin and Hobbes which was so brilliant and a real 'thing' for me and my best friend at school. Which feels like a very long time ago.

curlyweasel · 07/11/2014 11:42

It's a lovely advert, but I'm not exactly rending my dressing gown over it... You lot, honestly! x

Mrsdavidcaruso · 07/11/2014 12:10

Liked the ad but now I have had people knocking on my door wanting to know where I got my penguin bollards put a note on my door to say bloody google the bollards and leave me in peace

Guitargirl · 07/11/2014 13:22

I showed the advert to the DCs this morning. DD (aged 7) practically melted. I paid a visit to John Lewis on Oxford street this morning to get the flipping penguins before they sell out. I was a bit Blush at feeling like a marketeer's dream but when I saw other people in the queue with armfuls of penguins I felt quite restrained. Can't believe there are already some on ebay. I also bought some lovely soft ladies socks with Monty on one and Mabel on the other to put in hampers for teens in the family. These were on the ground floor with the other accessories not on the Christmas floor.

Smartleatherbag · 07/11/2014 14:02

Well, it's quite sweet, but the whole JL Christmas ad thing just goes over my head.

It's an advert for a massive chain store.

Marcipex · 07/11/2014 15:01

It's quite cute, but I can't imagine crying over it.

madmother1 · 07/11/2014 15:40

I love it - really really sweet and of course the penguin is a toy all the way through, it's just the child's imagination.

HappyAgainOneDay · 07/11/2014 16:21

No tears here. I wonder when these big stores - with lots of money - will remember the real reason for which we celebrate Christmas and go back to having nativity displays in their windows - perhaps moving exhibits.

I was in a well known shop that sells cards and found hardly any Christmas cards relating to Baby Jesus in any way. Just a star or three wise men / kings on a card would suffice.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 16:38

It's definitely not It's A Wonderful Life. I NEED to know what it is though!
