The John Lewis Christmas ad has destroyed me. The tears were pouring down my face. Oh God. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or watch it again so I can have another cry....

Edit from MNHQ: Sorry for butting in squiggleirl - but we're just going to add a link to to the video here so everyone can sob uncontrollably enjoy it . Apologies for the intrusion!

Now the cynic in me is thinking does the little boy lack real love in his life? Is he a sad single only?! That's no offence to onlys but I have known some who hated it... and some who loved it!

And I cried much more at the Bear and the Hare last years advert despite Lily Allen murdering the song

Sunna · 06/11/2014 16:01

Dry eyed here. But if it had been the John Lennon original I'd be in bits.

PrettyPictures92 · 06/11/2014 16:08

Aww shucks. Though it didn't make me cry and I'm a regular crier at Christmas ads Grin

EmilyGilmore · 06/11/2014 16:09

When the mum stands at the door, why is she looking sad? And the boy too? Isn't it Christmas morning?

I once knew a teacher who went on a school trip to the zoo. On the bus on the way home, there was a lot of commotion on the back seats and no it wasn't snogging…..someone had nicked a penguin from the zoo in their rucksack. True story. They returned it though.

newgirl123 · 06/11/2014 16:40

I think the idea of the penguin finding love is ok - the hint is that everything is changing - growing up - thats why the mum looks wistful - next year the boy wont be interested in penguins etc

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 06/11/2014 16:46

That's true temporary, but I would expect that to totally go over a small child's head.

herecomesthsun · 06/11/2014 16:47

nb link below is the ad with the voiceover from the Babalook, works quite well

EmilyGilmore · 06/11/2014 16:50

Of course it's all going over the boy's head! These adverts aren't made for children you know.

theDudesmummy · 06/11/2014 16:54

All the overanalysis! It is absolutely LOVELY....

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 06/11/2014 16:55

Yes, I'm well aware of that Emily (if that comment was aimed at me).

My comment was in reply to/following on from earlier ones.

BeGhoul · 06/11/2014 16:58

I'm waiting for the inevitable "AIBU to think grown ups shouldn't cry over Christmas advertisements" thread.

Is it here yet?

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2014 17:06

Ok... I looked at the penguins. They are not as cute as in the advert.

I passed.

the white company currently has cuter penguins in stock

5toocoolforschool · 06/11/2014 17:25

I thought she was just looking at him because he was pleased with his present.

lemisscared · 06/11/2014 17:28

WHy are you all crying? its a nice advert, but tears? really?

LokiBear · 06/11/2014 17:45

I think there is something wrong with me. I'm dry - eyed and underwhelmed.

Whattheduck · 06/11/2014 18:07

Didn't do anything for me and i think the penguins they are selling are ugly

I didn't cry but thought it was sweet and thought "ahhh" at the ending because my 6yr old thinks his cuddly lemur is real too. Though the lemurs is not ready to date yet.

Jollyphonics · 06/11/2014 18:19

It does nothing for me. I think it's a bit yucky actually. It reminds me of those hideous Athena posters of little kids dressed up as bride and groom.

Jollyphonics · 06/11/2014 18:23

And don't get me started on the destruction of John Lennon's beautiful song!

flipityflopity · 06/11/2014 18:26

Dry eyes here, but very cute.
