I hear ya , I get meltdown , refusing to walk , goes floppy, no sense to danger if I shouted stop he wouldn’t . The list goes on

Sskanf · 07/10/2023 22:29

This also sounds like my 3.5 year old. He Can say a limited amount of singular words but you have to try really hard to understand him, hes able to sing a lot of nursery rhymes I domt understand all the words but figure it from the tune. He is unable to follow instructions also mental age 12 months old. He mostly.screams out of frustration from not being understood and will hit out at me or himself when overwhelmed

Thank you @PinkMoscatoLover for your kind words.
I appreciate it, it's definitely been a tough 3 and half years trying not to blame myself.

It really is fascinating my daughter could sing every nursery rhythm at 2 but couldn't communicate her need even at the end part of three and suddenly she just started putting 2 -3 words to thing she 3 and half now and we still have a long way to go but she's learning in chunks now and has delayed echolalia which actually is handy because she repeats stuff I say for certain scenarios and things she watches which is great considering where she was but now we have little patience and demand avoidance to deal with but I'm so proud of how far and how quickly she's come verve speach and laugage has helped aswell

4LittleFirecrackers · 08/10/2023 11:26

It seems most are claiming for neurodiverse conditions so unsure how successful my claim will be, is anyone claiming for or claimed and been successful for conditions of the hip such as perthes which affect walking?

This gives me so much hope for my boy who’s just turned 3!
he has no understanding which is so difficult but he has improved so much in the last year but still far behind children his age.
im hoping some dla money can go towards some SLT as I know the words are there x

Tmxx · 08/10/2023 11:48

Hi has anyone ever claimed and been successful for a baby under 1? My boy has spinabifida and needs to be catheterised every 3 hours and has hydrocephalus so has a shunt and is on multiple medications a day but it seems they might still say no due to him being a baby and all babies need a lot!? Thanks 🙂

4LittleFirecrackers · 08/10/2023 12:01

This is on DLAs guidance
Age at date of claim
Award Period
1-7
Award to age 8 (or for 1 year, whichever is the longer)
8 - 15
Award to age 16 (or for 1 year, whichever is the longer)
does not mention under one so difficult to say isn’t it, not really helpful I know but if your not successful even after appeal you should definitely re apply at age 1 as it appears they receive DLA to age 8 minimum.

Georgia174 · 08/10/2023 12:32

Hi, my scan date is 13th june. Ive seen people getting decisions with later dates than me. Im worried we will be declined. Hoping for an answer next week 🤞🏻

@4LittleFirecrackers thank you for replying to me 😁 the community nurse told me wheb he was born I can apply for dla when he is 3 months and I just have been so unsure! But decided to give it a go! He is 10 months now but scan date was 11th July

4LittleFirecrackers · 08/10/2023 12:43

They may approve under 1s it’s just not on their form, plus he’ll be 1 in 2 months anyway, spins bifida isn’t just going to magically disappear. What’s your scan date? He may be 1 by the time it’s with DM anyway :-)

4LittleFirecrackers · 08/10/2023 12:44

My scan date is 11th July so 15 weeks would be 24th October but obviously as we all know its taking longer so I'm thinking half way threw November instead

4LittleFirecrackers · 08/10/2023 12:59

I’ll keep everything crossed for you, my scan date is 30th June so not far off, I’m assuming end of oct for me, just don’t have the energy for MR

My little one is 9 months and we applied with help from the financial social worker at Great Ormond Street - she helps families apply all the time so you can definitely get it for babies.

Don’t worry about what people on this thread are claiming for, I doubt it represents the whole country. You can claim for any condition as long as the care needs are more of an average child the same age as your child.

People claim DLA because their children have things like diabetes, severe asthma and eczema. As long as you’ve explained how your child struggles with mobility and added any professional evidence, you should be fine. Try not to worry!

My son has a rare genetic disorder and was awarded MRC at 11 months old. Too young to apply for mobility obviously and he doesn’t have any significant overnight care so wasn’t expecting HRC.

All babies need a lot of care but as long as you write out just how different his care needs are in comparison to another baby then that would be fine. Were you able to submit professional evidence as that always helps? I had reports from the geneticist, paediatrician, physio, ot, dietician and so forth

Tmxx · 08/10/2023 13:15

@Am169 Amazing thank you for replying to me! 😁😁

Tmxx · 08/10/2023 13:19

@PinkMoscatoLover hi yes I submitted loads, all of his discharge papers from hospital when he was born with all of his surgeries and diagnosis on, all his updates from urology for his bladder problems and his updates from his nuero surgeon! I sent a list of his repeat perscriptions and a letter from his neuro surgeons stating he will be seeing him regularly threwout his whole life due to his weak limbs, bladder issues and neuro side of things! So hopefully enough 🙏 also stated how he was 8 months old and done nothing more than a newborn as he is sp for behind and is having regular physio for all of this. I really hope we get it he has so many appointment to attend too! Just from the 6th October to 19th October I have 5 appointments and it is regularly like this!

PinkMoscatoLover · 08/10/2023 13:21

@Tmxx I totally get you on the appointments front. It’s exhausting. Sounds like you submitted a lot of evidence so fingers crossed!
