I think your friend should register in her own right so we can talk to her as well [non-christmassy Smile

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 10/12/2011 10:21

Did you mind me updating, nickel? Only Fab seemed to think I shouldn't have ...

JKSLtd · 10/12/2011 10:24

As long as she puts a Christmas smiley in each post we'll know who's who Smile

CupAndSorcery · 10/12/2011 10:26

When can we get the hot towels ready?

Or am i getting birth confused with a visit to a Chinese restaurant?? Confused

Flisspaps · 10/12/2011 10:30

Excellent thought Cups - go to a Chinese restaurant as they'll have hot towels ready AND food that's edible unlike hospitals AND you don't have to wash up the plates and cups and towels unlike at home. Genius! Grin

nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 10:31

Right, okay, I got the last post.

Hopefully everyone found the link!

Yes, Friend arrived yesterday afternoon, just minutes before I got back from the hospital, so I have been busy with her.

So, crappy journey to the hospital (whic hdoesn't give confidence in going up there in full albour!!)
Got there in time for my appointment, though, but bumped into the lady from my anteantal class, who was due about a week after me. She had a sweep on wednesday and gave birth in the after noon of Thursday (we saw her dad while we were waiting to go in) A little girl, beautiful name (better not put it in case I out her), such a beautiful little bundle. Heavier than she looks, but tall, so they think that's why. Loads of stitches, and some grazing. They were just going home.

So, I went in, got hooked to the monitor, heartbeat fine and base rate as it was before. Isbn was asleep (it always is at that time of day! thank God we went in the previous evening, because otherwise they might have been a bit more fussy about stuff!) - it's awake in the evenings and early mornings normally.
I kept messing up markign the paper, because I thought I was about to get Foetal moevments, but they turned out to be "tightenings" (they were every 10 minutes on the monitor), but they still amrked them as irregular, mainly because they were obviosuly not contractions.
I also had the ultrasound scan. Thanks to you lot, I went in and said "We don't know what the sex is, so could you make sure I don't see any underbeneathsies Blush" to a Sonographer!
Anyway, everything there was fine, too, could see baby's head in place, etc. (obv didn't get to see thigh bone), and all the measurements she took were in line with perfection Grin

I've got to go in today, at some point. Tehy did recommend morning, but I want DH there, so I'm going to ring as soon as I've finished updating you (and when I know approx what time DH will finish work) to organise it for this afternoon.

I am going to request a VE with view to having a membrane sweep.
(there, that's progress!! Grin)

Sorry I din't update all yesterday, once I got back to the shop, it was quite manic, because DH was dealing with customers, and I had to show Friend her room and show her stuff etc, and then let her cash up.
then she came to our house for Tea, and then we went off to choir.
When we got back from choir (minus Friend now), we went straight to bed to "practise induction techniques Wink " Grin
Was rather interesting.

The whole thing about the sweep, is because during tea, we were discussing the hospital events with Friend and she helped me to see that the idea of a Sweep was actually less invasive/severe than the induction, and it might mean that I still got to deliver at home, if it worked.
I had mentioned that I wanted a VE without having to decide on whether I wanted a sweep beforehand, but she kind of explained that the reason they do it that way round, is if the cervix is favourable, doing a sweep then means less chance of infection, and they're not supposed to ask if you want it done while they're up there, because that could be seen as duress, and wouldn't be able to do it at the same time.

After sex, I thought about updating you all, but thought best not, and have good night's sleep instead. (which, as usual, it was a bit up-and-down)
but for the first night in God knows how long, I didn't wake up dribbling Grin

So, no Isbn yet, but we'll see what happens.
Apparently, if I do have a Sweep, we have to have sex again tonight.
(and of course, I'm really worried that the VE will show that there's no fucking movement in the cervix, and that I'll never get it out that way!!)

BIWI - no problem with that, dearie! I know you were all convinced I'd given birth without telling you! Grin

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 10:34

Reality (from previous thread)
that's lovely :)

I'm thinking of putting in my notes that I don't want that Doctor having any more to do with the birht (Sod's law then dictates that she's the only one available in an emergency)

OP posts:
saffronwblue · 10/12/2011 10:40

NIckel just wanted to say don't feel pressure to update even though we are all riveted.
The birth of your baby will unfold in its own way and your needs are much more important than our insatiable curiosity.

Akiram · 10/12/2011 10:43

I disagree. You absolutely must update - we are all your virtual birthing partners, we have been with you through 2 whole threads! We deserve to be there at the crowning moment Xmas Grin
Seriously, it will happen and when it does I wish you all the best and I'm glad you are taking my advice from Thread 1 to have some sex Xmas Wink

CointreauVersial · 10/12/2011 10:45

I know not everyone rates sweeps but it worked a treat for me. I wasn't allowed chemical induction with DD2 after previous cs and had the appointment for another cs looming over me, so I would have tried anything to avoid it. Find a mw you know and trust, it is invasive and uncomfortable, but I was in labour 12 hours later, so worth it.

Good luck, stay strong, hope it gets going soon.

nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 10:48

don't worry, guys I'm so ingrained in MN now that I couldn't give birth without telling you all GrinGrin

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 10:49

thanks Cointreau
I'm sure it's a lot less stressful than the next stage.
I hope.
Still, it's worth trying it.

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 10:51

Akiram - maybe I should have done that before!
(we did do it once, but it was uncomfortable - i think it's one of those things "if you don't try it, the baby might never come out!!"

Anyway, got to wash, get dressed, go to the Post Office and bank.
so I might be a couple of hours.

can't get through to Triage to arrange to go in this afternoon. I'm sure it can wait.

pigsinmud · 10/12/2011 10:53

I had a sweep with dc4. I was 5 days overdue and it worked a treat....consultant said "oops" and then realised he had accidentally broken my waters. Went home and dc4 born 4 hours later in our bedroom.

fraktious · 10/12/2011 10:54

A VE may accidentally turn into a sort of sweep if you're dilated enough. MW shoved her fingers up, furkled a bit, I nearly went flying off the bed and she went 'oh'. Apparently my cervix wasn't where she thought it was Shock

youtalkintomeunderthemiseltoe · 10/12/2011 10:55

I'm still here too, 40+9 today walked the floor for about an hour last night with awful back pain that was just wind in the end Blush. Booked for induction next Thursday so am now resigned to the fact that that is probably when i'll be meeting this baby. My other 2 have had a good 2-3 days of pre labour whereas i'm having nothing now not even really having tightenings.

I hope the sweep goes well, it's probably perfect time for one now.

Akiram · 10/12/2011 10:55

fraktious Shock
Love the word furkled though, might have to steal that Xmas Grin

minceorotherwise · 10/12/2011 10:58

Oh sorry... I just meant if he is playing the piano then something might be happening? I thought tinkling on the ivories was just a phrase for playing the piano? Sorry...feel bad now :(

NorksAreMessy · 10/12/2011 10:58

these threads are adding to our vocabularies greatly. ISBN is educating from beyond the cervix!

thanksamillion · 10/12/2011 11:00

marking my place. Glad you've decided to go with the sweep if you need it Nickel. Your friend is right that it's the less invasive of the two options. Smile

naturalbaby · 10/12/2011 11:05

i had a v.thorough stretch and sweep with my 1st because my waters broke and my mw knew how desperate i was for a home birth. i didn't really want one and it made things a bit more intense but i did have a baby 6hrs later. only because things were starting anyway.

so jealous of your v.talented dh's piano skills. will have to get one of my dc's to become a pianist!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 10/12/2011 11:07

good luck Nickel, really just marking my place for 'later'

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 10/12/2011 11:11

nickel - thread no. 3! Hope things go well today and really hope that ISBN decides to put in an appearance soon.
Possibly a silly thing to say, but remember to breathe - it does help. And also remember to let your bod do what it wants to - it knows what it's doing.

(((hugs))) for you! (love that you're not using the Christmas smileys until ISBN is born cos you don't want any upstaging! Grin)
