Fingers crossed for successful sweep and HB.

My second sweep with DS was the one that set me off.

TheOriginalFAB · 10/12/2011 17:11

It's okay BIWI, I was a bit Confused but should have started a new paragraph after thanking you.

TheOriginalFAB · 10/12/2011 17:12

I mean confused at what you meant, not at what you said.

gallicgirl · 10/12/2011 17:17

inout, in a sweep, the MW gets a broom handle and.....Grin

or.....during an internal examination, the midwife moves her finger around the cervix to stimulate and/or separate the membranes around the baby from the cervix. This causes a release of prostaglandins which can help to kick-start labour.

It's a bit uncomfortable but it did the job in my case.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 10/12/2011 17:19

good luck for later!!!
just want to add that we were told to use the phrase
"what are the consequences of not doing that for 15 minutes"
ie for those times where they say, we have to do this now.

obviously in the event of the answer being it is likely that harm will come to you or the baby then there is no point in stalling!!

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 10/12/2011 17:32

Marking my place. Again.
Sweeps? Done that with DS, and it certainly worked!

Sending love x

inoutshakeitallabout · 10/12/2011 17:33

right, thanks! when measuring dilation, do you have to let them do that? last hijack promise!

ConfessionsOfATinselFanjo · 10/12/2011 17:43

underbeneathsies Brilliant! (can you tell I haven't read much of this thread yet?)

Tangle · 10/12/2011 17:44

inout - No. You don't have to let them do anything. If they do anything without your consent then, technically, they are performing an assault. That said there are times when I'd agree to a VE - but those occasions do not include just because I've arrived at hospital or just because the clock says its time to do another one!

Tangle · 10/12/2011 17:56

ByThePower - did you get the expanded list? I came across the acronym TBRAINS in NCT but have seen it in a few places:

Do we have Time to talk about this?
What are the Benefits?
What are the Risks?
What are the Alternatives?
What does my Intuition/Instinct say?
What happens if we do Nothing for a while?
Smile!

Re. birth plans, with DD1 we had a planned HB with IMs. We'd talked about all manner of possibilities so IIRC my birth plan read "to have this baby as quickly and easily as possible."

For this one I'm less sure we'll be staying at home so I've written something a bit more detailed that includes what's important to ME. Its in two parts - the first is for everything is going fine (and could be summarised by, "please come and wave a sonic aid every 15 minutes, but otherwise don't talk to me and leave me alone!") and the 2nd for when everything is going pear shaped (one of the key comments of which is that unless things are really going wrong in a hurry, we need to feel as in control as possible by understanding why interventions are being recommended and being allowed to make our own decisions about whether or not to accept them - experience with DD2 being that we'll usually accept but feel a lot better about the process!)

Please note that in this context I'm using "in control" to mean "in charge of making decisions" and not "expecting my labour to conform to my pre-determined hopes and desires" :o.

ConfessionsOfATinselFanjo · 10/12/2011 17:56

All the jumoping up needing to do house works sounds promising. 2 days before DD was born i kept needing to go our for really long walks. Makes me pleased she was a Summer baby as there is no way I'd be up for an hour long walk at 10.30pm in the snow and dark!
Just try not to over do it, as after 2 walks the day after the night walk, I was quite exhausted when I finally went into proper labour that night!

Also hope the sweep went well and that there is lots of lovely dilation going on in there.

Tangle · 10/12/2011 17:58

EAP - I'm doing OK, thank you :). 38 weeks today and rapidly reaching the point where I'm quite happy for this DC to arrive as soon as it wants! But I promise to try not to beat Nickel Wink

KateFrothers · 10/12/2011 18:01

Oh my word still no baby? Can I suggest you get twiddling those nipples like you've never twiddled before? You need to adopt the style of inexperienced teenage boy/vigorously tuning an analogue radio to long wave.

well quite, most women who want a 'natural' birth and choose HB or MLU get exactly that...

sadly, all the scoffing by my MW about my first HB meant had she turned up, i wouldn't have trusted her opinion....

fortunately i got a lovely MW who is now head of team!

EdlessAllenPoe · 10/12/2011 19:09

tangle good to hear it. ;) was following your posts and really hope it all goes well!

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 10/12/2011 19:29

I really hoped when everything went quiet last night that it was going to be an announcement today, glad to see the update even if ISBN still hasn't made an appearance.

Good luck Nickel!

nickelbabe · 10/12/2011 19:29

brilliant post Fio :)

I'm quickly writing my update while the curry is cooking in the oven.

We got to the hospital at about half past 4, and the MW (same one as Thursday - her name isn't Marianne, but in the notes she's just down as S Surname, so don't know her first name.), asked whether I wanted the sweep first or the CTG. I ummed and ahhed a bit thn said "I'll go for the unpleasant one"
It was definitely not "right, get on there then off we go!" there was plenty of time for me to do my thing in getting my knickers off, and getting in position (I never need much time to faff around - just get on the bed and get on with it!, but it was nice to be given a slow pace). She explained what would happen, and that she had really small fingers (really they were tiny!), and then just did it. It didn't hurt. the only uncofmrtable bit was when she first inserted her fingers, but that was it, the rest was perfectly fine. The conclusion is that she could fel everything and stretch me to 3cm (in the notes she's just put 3cm dilated, membranes swept - intact), and she could feel the waters and the head.
The CTG was less successful, because Isbn just kept moving, and knocking the monitor out! The paper got screwed up a bit as well. It meant that we were on there a lot longer than we should have been, but she was perfectly happy with the readings. My notes say "CX mid position 80% effaced"
All the other notes look good, pretty much the same conclusion as Thursd.

I reckon I did have quite a strong contraction - not sure if more than one, but it felt really, really tight.

Oh, another thing she mentioned was that my abs have separated (cos when I pulled up my head, the lump stuck right out, so she had a palp, and could feel both sides of them.) That has been the most upsetting thing so far, because I thought that the bellydancing was supposed to prevent that from happening (although I do remember reading that if your abs are too solid before you are PG that as it all grows, they are more likely to separate)
Hopefully it means that they will be quite quick to get back to normal again.
(it doesn't hurt)

I think i'm having another contraction now.

The plan for tomorrow is that if I don't go into labour tonight, we have to go back again for the CTG again. I asked if it would be the sweep as well, but she didn't seem too bothered about it, so I confirmed with her that if I wanted to try that again, they would do it.
She also said that if I had my waters broken, that it was pretty likely that everything would start very quickly, because of how dilated I was.
(so I'm assumign the same if I have SROM tonight)
she also recommended the nipple-tweakign thing, so any tips on how to do that to the best advantage is now appreciated :)

While we were being monitored, a girl came in at 38 weeks, who thought she might have a UTI, but they put her on the CTG, and then suddenly she was surrounded by green scrubs. Unfortunately, her trace was not normal, and they said that the baby needed to be taken out as quickly as possible. It was awful. I really hope they're both okay. The speed at which it all happened was horrid, too. It went from brown wee to Doctor asking loads of questions to "i've been having migraines" to "we've got to get this baby out" :( :( :(
I'm really thinking about her and her baby (and partner) now, hoping to God that it all works out and that the baby is okay, and that she is too.

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 10/12/2011 19:36

Nickel, she will be fine and it was good that she got there - she is in the best place to get something sorted out. Don't start thinking about the worst case scenarios for you or for anyone else right now as it really won't help Sad chin up chicken Smile

Right so sweep accepted (see not that invasive is it Wink) I reckon today is the day so good luck and keep us up to datex

Wolfiefan · 10/12/2011 19:36

Sending positive thought to you nickel and girl and her baby. Let's hope all well.

Sparklingbaubles · 10/12/2011 19:38

My sweep was at about 7pm and had Ds2 (9) at 2.30am. It all sounds v promising Nickel. Church tomorrow with baby maybe? Smile

OddBaubles · 10/12/2011 19:43

Glad things seemed to go well. :) Can't wait to hear that things have progressed.

BeeBread · 10/12/2011 19:52

Well done Nickel; these things aren't easy so I'm really pleased for you that it went ok.

3cm is GREAT progress - took me the pessary and 6 hours on the synto drip (even when I was 9 days over) to reach that point and things happened pretty quickly from then on. I am envious of your efficient body - clearly it knows what it's doing!

Don't worry about your abs: I reckon a bit of belly dancing and they will be back together before you know it. Most women's separate in pregnancy - I reckon mine were about 5cm apart by the end and they pretty much came back by themselves with no exercise belly dancing at all.

That girl's baby would have been out in a matter of minutes - it is shocking/scary stuff but then it would have been in the best hands and they can do so many amazing things these days. And that's not going to happen to you, promise.

sittinginthesun · 10/12/2011 19:55

Sounds as though things are moving already. With DS2, I didn't feel any pain at all until 4cm (waters had gone, though), so hopefully all the tightenings you are feeling are painless contractions.
