Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

It's often perplexed me how the Quakers (I am one) have used the term "Overseers and Elders" for Pastoral and Spiritual support. Thankfully that term has been retired now but sometimes I still have to explain how offensive it is, in my meeting when people complain about the fact that it was retired (Not often any more, to be fair)

Overseer...Officer...sound quite similar..

It appears that MN has now banned a longstanding poster on royal threads who happens to be a black woman and has received a lot of ridicule. Yet they let racism go unchecked elsewhere. Wonderful.

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 07/06/2023 17:06

yes indeed, suspended I think, despite other posters with many many more deletions and goading of her remaining ... on every thread she starts it goes the same, its so obvious.

I'm sad about this, but it's not a banning, it's a suspension I believe. But it doesn't matter, it still should not have happened. She has been calm and measured throughout persistent and unwarranted goading.

PinotGroggio · 07/06/2023 17:13

Ah that's good to hear @Roussette. Her subsequent comments were deleted so I wasn't sure. But it's astounding that she's been suspended while the racists continue to run free.

Oh no. Just goes to show one standard for them and a harsher one for us.

LBFseBrom · 07/06/2023 17:19

Grossly unfair.

LadyKenya · 07/06/2023 20:21

That does not sound right.

It’s just really made obvious the real blind spot MN has for racism on this site. So many people think that it’s name calling or cross burning but not the insidious undermining and gas lighting that happens time and time again followed by tone policing when people get understandably upset.

:( sad to hear this. What were her posts on? Would love to read if available.

It’s best not to - we’ve already been warned about talking about other threads in this thread and the people who are especially goady trawl the site searching for some of us. It would be a shame to lose this forum and this thread.

I agree, even though I am curious of course too.

we all experience this don't we? where we are scrutinised for how we deal with racism and baiting while others get to behave however they like. Appalling she was given a suspension after weeks and weeks of posters gleefully posting about her and other regular posters of colour there no longer contributing because it had got so bad and so heated over the car chase posters actually had to remove themselves from the conversation and the moment she goes back to start a separate reasonable discussion they pounce on her and start in again. Yes some had comments deleted, but they're all still allowed to continue posting, none suspended... they literally were asking for PMs about another poster they were smearing with lies, knowing it upsets her as she is completely anti racism. It is wrong on every level.

Roussette · 08/06/2023 09:31

@AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe
So much this. And I know firsthand. The trouble is... and I think we all know this on MN..... we have probably all been through it in some way or another...

Someone posts something completely untrue and very insulting (your last long sentence is relevant) and some posters read it, buy into it, believe it., laugh about it, are outraged about it, even though it is a lie. By the time that slur about someone is reported and removed, it's too late. No one scrolls back and sees it's been deleted. The deletion just makes the person concerned feel better and the malicious post has become fact in some posters minds.

Reugny · 08/06/2023 16:48

Sometimes on goady threads I'm tempted to write "nice try" but contain myself.

🙄🤐

I'm new to Mumsnet and from the threads I've seen so far am mortified that racism goes unchecked. Did a quick search on LinkedIn for Mumsnet employees and well, let's say it's not the most diverse.

meowgoeswho · 08/06/2023 21:28

To add to my post below - is it worth us supporting Mumsnet and being on it if it doesn't do much to support minority races? Genuine question here. I've read other threads including a recent one on a white mother worried about her DS going to a grammar school with majority Asian/ethnic minorities. The gaslighting on the thread made me cringe. As I said I'm new to Mumsnet so wasn't expecting this. It's made me wonder why ethnic minorities should bother with Mumsnet.

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 08/06/2023 21:54

I wonder that too

There are some positive aspects, and its alway good to see how lower life forms behave in the wild.

meowgoeswho · 08/06/2023 22:26

@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting I see your point! SmileHowever I can't get onboard with Mumsnet if it sweeps racism under the carpet and is bling to the gaslighting that minorities face on the platform.
There's also something amiss if this company is lacking diversity (at least based on LinkedIn search).

It is definitely a problem and it's getting worse as the anti woke brigade get more vapid and rabid. Its interesting to see the true colours of those posters who try to present a reasonable façade, but who are really as racist as hell. But its ok because America is worse 😂I would really like to know why the Admins enable such behaviour.

meowgoeswho · 08/06/2023 22:54

Well put! It could be down to poor and inefficient moderators. Did some quick googling and found out that they lost advertisers when it was highlighted that there's transphobic content on Mumsnet . Surely if the platform enables and turns a blind eye to racism it should be highlighted. If it affects their revenue they are more likely to be more vigilant. Im going to have a think on how this can be done.

It certainly has brought out people who think they are reasonable but prove to be anything but. Truly eye opening.

Exchange230316 · 09/06/2023 08:57

@meowgoeswho
I will support you on this. The racism on mumsnet is appalling and tiring at the same time. I really think the site should be called out for it and I find I am using MN less and less now. It very much to me feels like a white space and when online I look for other forums to discuss topics now.
