Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

Those fans should be banned.
Really disgusting.

Not just the fans in Spain commentators and journalists accuse him of making opposition fans angry. You rarely hear them see "racism is wrong we need to do something" it is "racism is bad but Vinicius does not help himself acting like this" SMH

@SleepDreamThinkHuge it should just be a ban. Immediately.

Absolutely not acceptable to blame him.

What is the other thread?

There are two in Feminism - One re Sex Negative the other Re Karen. Vocal groups of 'Feminists' telling women of colour that white is right.

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 23/05/2023 09:38

just read Meghan Markles mom is a 'crowd pleasing accessory'
wow, the royal boards are bad!! its so gross.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 23/05/2023 10:24

That a new one. It's difficult to read many of those posts on the RF board without hearing 'tell me you are a racist without telling me you are a racist' ringing in your head. I admire Doria's decorum.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 23/05/2023 10:33

No 5 is currently getting a fresh airing. ABW's and their Allies are scary and close minded... Oh, the irony.

yeah absolutely and sometimes it is blatant and removed and it doesn't stop. I rarely go there but when I do.... its revealing a lot about the site

PinotGroggio · 23/05/2023 10:54

There's one poster in particular who is constantly starting threads designed to tear down MM and then the moment she's challenged she accuses others of attacking her and flounces.

And yet another one who clearly thinks she's above it all and that copying and pasting swathes from Wikipedia makes her right. Apparently responding to posters who moan about MM's mother being seen with her by saying Carole Middleton is also seen in public is somehow bitching about Carole.

Tbh they all need to focus on their own lives rather than that of someone they don't know.

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 23/05/2023 10:57

@PinotGroggio yes they do its pretty sad really that so many like to spend their time tearing down women and black women in particular. the poster you are talking about likes to bait people and honestly I don't know why people go there really... its unpleasant and pointless and giving them what they want, an argument and to provoke poc

Roussette · 23/05/2023 11:00

It's shocking on there, as I know to my cost. And even when someone isnt called racist, they scream how obnoxious it is to be called racist, the outrage is off the scale. That tells me something is hitting home ....

Mumsnet tech glitch has messed up my post.

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 23/05/2023 11:12

well its pretty revealing that black posters need their own board, why can't they make the whole site a place free of racism

HypocrisyRules · 23/05/2023 11:15

Some things really can't be erased. They'll find even more clever ways to be racist, no matter what you do.

HypocrisyRules · 23/05/2023 11:25

That is not possible, not when the members are people, who are part of society. Racism is a societal problem. The mods on MN even seem to have a problem recognizing racism, unless it is pointed out, and reported.

oh you're right of course, the issue is the moderation and it should be unsurprising to me that it reflects society. I do not know about now but I remember years ago reading something about Facebook mods being 70% white men.

LadyKenya · 23/05/2023 11:46

I sure do wonder how many of the mods on here are poc@AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe . It would seem to me to be less than the fingers on one hand. But yes, it does make me think.

I have a peek from time to time, and it never fails to disappoint. They love their conspiracy theories too.

The obsession is quite disturbing. Could you be bothered expending that kind of energy on people that don't affect your daily lives.

I know. It is clearly never about race when it comes to Meghan the '25%/1/4 black temptress and corrupter of royalty'🙄

Yes I do see it too especially when I see threads that compare Meghan to Kate. The descriptions of Meghan are so obviously stereotypical tropes applied to mixed race Black women and the descriptions of Kate are so obviously the stereotypes applied to white women.

It makes me exasperated because Harry pursued Meghan, but Kate pursued William [by wearing a see through dress].

But Meghan is the man-eating corrupting temptress that controls Harry, while Kate is classy, demure, motherly and pure.

I bring this up quietly and am told, no it’s not race it’s their personalities as to why Meghan is unpopular/bad and Kate is popular/good and I’m just “oversensitive” when it comes to race- you know how it goes. When you’re told “not everything is about race” 😡

I know. I nearly spat my coffee out at the comment about the poor behaviour of movements who cannot be questioned on their behaviour. Knock, Knock is that the pot calling?

It is exhausting. There are literally hundreds of headlines showing them doing the same thing and Meghan being called out negatively for it But like you say no its not racism. I mean that chimpanzee picture that Danny Baker posted, sooooo funny and not racist at all. I am not surprise she has been back. Would you? Meanwhile Andrew, barely gets a mention. It says something that the the colour of your skin is more important than whether you had questionable relationships with vulnerable girls or young women.

If I were Meghan, no I would not have stayed. I think Meghan was right to leave the U.K.

The racism directed at here was constant and insidious as was the faux innocence about all but the most overt forms- like the chimpanzee cartoon which was rightly condemned BUT should never have been published in the first place! The fact it happened at all shows how racist Britain still is - we live it so we know it’s the tip of an iceberg.

I’ve just started reading “Maybe I Don’t Belong Here” by David Harewood. Only read the foreword by David Olusoga so far. My daughter got the book and has given it to me last weekend saying mum you have to read this. Even just having read the foreword this morning which was about the silencing of racism as well as belonging and having this conversation with you, I’m now thinking about belonging and how for Meghan she would have been completely untethered and felt silenced and unable to speak up about the racism.

I don’t feel I belong here like a white British person belongs here. Belonging is along family, community, culture for me- and that’s enough to keep me here. But Meghan would have had nothing to keep her here. She would have had only the sense of not belonging here and not even being welcome here and it would have been overwhelming.

So, although arguably LA may be more or just as racist as London depending on who you talk to, I think she has more ties of belonging to the US. At least, I hope she does.
