Racist abuse of Saka, Sancho and Rashford after penalty misses

HmmmmmmInteresting · 12/07/2021 11:18

This is why I don't support England and was dreading them winning as I don't think the fans deserve it. They don't deserve those boys.

The boys are English when they score goals but monkeys and the N word when they don't.

Rashford runs a campaign to feed starving kids and gets nothing but racial and other types of abuse week in week out. Sterling regularly vilified in the press for buying his mum a house and his wife shopping at Primark 🙄. Both rise above it and are nothing but professional in their measured comments. And they have to be or it would just get worse.

The right wing press if this country feeds the jingoism, racism and xenophobia and this place is just a cesspool now.

The lip service paid to the situation: the statements 'condeming' the racism and the pathetic kneeing (which the English fans have charmingly taken to booing). A nation that has to tell it's fans not to racially abuse its team because they lost a football game is not one to be proud of.

@Roussette

This is encouraging...

Defender Mings hitting out at Pritti Vile Patel.

The Government might just regret their stance on this. I'm starting to wonder that, if by losing, this team of young lads might have more of a profound effect on our society than if they had won.

Tyrone Mings
@OfficialTM_3
You don’t get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as ‘Gesture Politics’ & then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against, happens.

Priti Patel
@pritipatel

I am disgusted that @England players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media.
It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable.

I was shocked and delighted to see that tweet. Footballers are usually so measured in their comments because they have been coached to be so. Clearly they've had enough. Hopefully it will be an interesting few days coming up

I think Tyrone sounds absolutely furious. Don't blame him. There is Patel footage out there ciriticising their stand against racism, then she jumps on the bandwagon calling out that very racism.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 13/07/2021 07:51

They were even reporting Tyrone's tweet on BBC and sky news last night. I'm glad it's come to this because a lot of people who aren't on media like twitter usually don't get to hear about dog whistle comments people like Priti Patel make. TV news doesn't usually report it. This has blown up in their faces and I hope there is more to come.

That Natalie Elphicke and her comments about Rashford haven't properly been reported on the TV news that I've seen. This is an MP who's husband was convicted of sexual crimes and she wrote a statement in support of him to get him off. These are our MPs. No wonder this place is a cess pool.

Well... the tories should be worried. Sports people like these footballers, musicians, actors have a far far bigger reach than the conservative propaganda machine and media mates.

At this moment in time, they cannot control the narrative and they will hate that fact.

Johnson and his lot are on the wrong side of all of this. No idea how they will repair.

It will be interesting if the team are invited to No.10 and how they respond to that.

What Elphicke said was disgusting. How stupid is she

FuglyBitch · 13/07/2021 08:00

It ms heartbreaking

Nengineer · 13/07/2021 08:11

I hope. I'm OK to post. I wanted to share my experience last week arriving in Male Airport. Two families, all British passports, other family black. We got to the desk and were waved through. The other family were stopped and questioned about the purpose of their visit, how long they intended to stay ect. We all live and work in the middle east, it was a Qatar Airways bubble holiday package. The children were frisked along with their parents. The tone was hostile and cold. It's my first experience of seeing white privelige in action, you can talk about it till the cows come home but it's only when I am standing there witnessing this horrendous difference based on the color of skin that I realize how fucked up things are. Incidentally the other family were considerably richer than me, all LV luggage etc. Sorry I hope it's OK to post here, I just wanted to acknowledge this.

Roussette · 13/07/2021 08:19

@Nengineer

I totally believe it.
A much loved Asian family member experiences this. Just his name can trigger this. When flying he is always picked out for extra searches, providing papers, intense questioning, all whilst my DD is just let through.

Orchidflower1 · 13/07/2021 08:25

It’s so awful isn’t, so very heartbreaking. It equally bad for all of them but to me Saka, bless him just looks about 12. That seems to make it even worse! I know he’s technically an adult but he is so very young.

There was a couple of posts on Instagram with a link for a petition for banning on Instagram. If I can make the link work( not sure if it move across platforms) I’ll add it here. I am really not tech savvy so apologies if this is a daft comment but everything on Instagram that is to do with Covid comes with an automatic link to info about Covid/ restrictions etc. Therefore there must be something screening the posts- why can’t this tech be applied to racist and other inappropriate comments? I know it does not deal with the issue it’s self but would surely remove an outlet?

Thank you @HmmmmmmInteresting for starting the thread and so sad to hear about your boys. 🤗

Tal45 · 13/07/2021 09:04

Rashford is an absolute hero IMO, what a fantastic role model for English boys, I cannot imagine why anyone would do anything other than worship the ground that lad walks on. I just think this is an amazing team with a fantastic manager and we need to get rid of the racists from the stands. There's been a petition all over my facebook page to ban racist supporters for life from matches - I don't know why that wouldn't already be in place but can it really be that difficult to implement?

Roussette · 13/07/2021 09:08

It's so warming to see the thousands of messages stuck to the defaced mural of Rashford.

Terriffids · 13/07/2021 09:17

I'm white British. I am absolutely disgusted by the abuse these 3 young guys have had, but sadly not in the least bit surprised.

The feeble speech given by the PM yesterday was as if he was just going through the motions, saying what he 'has to say' whilst at the same time trying to think of a way of it benefitting him.

Every time this happens we have 'important' people condemning it but words are just not enough any more. It's time for positive action. These idiots need to be identified, prosecuted and banned from all forms of social media and from attending any type of sports event for the rest of their lives.

Maybe I'm naïve but I just don't understand why the media giants can't deal with this. They know who these idiots are, there needs to be more pressure from (our pathetic) PM to get this sorted.

Is this the sort of thing that we can petition about? Get the law changed so that all racist users can be identified and brought to justice? Something has to change, enough is enough.

Yes yes yes to this. Telling them to crawl back under a rock. Maybe he should try that?

Yes on the media giants. It takes the public to identify people and demand action (like the Savills guy). He would have got away with it if it wasn't for the public.

Marcus Rashford has made a statement. It actually brought tears to my eyes.
What an inspiration he is.

@nancy75

While the racist comments were depressingly predictable I think we should feel some small hope in how people have reacted to them. A few years ago this would have gone by with very little comment, all I have seen all day today is absolute outrage & condemnation of these scumbags. I’m not talking about Boris, he’s full of shit about everything, but thousands of normal people arguing back & reporting this stuff. The change is too slow & the steps we’re taking are tiny but it does feel like there has been a shift in what decent people find acceptable & unacceptable and they are making their voices heard.
I agree with this. There has been a lot of condemnation about the racist abuse. This feels different to me. A change, a step forward towards equality, hopefully.
Roussette · 13/07/2021 10:00

This feels a tiny bit different to me too. It is helped by the fact the BBC is for once doing its job.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 13/07/2021 10:42

I think the fact that people came out to 'take back' the mural and that the racism is getting condemned and action taken is a step forward. I thought about the racist Twitter posting estate agent guy that if people online can hunt down a guy who was cruel to a cat like in that documentary then surely it should be possible to find the racists too. I was feeling a bit hopeful.

Then I misguidedly went on the 'taking the knee thread' and felt depressed again. Full of 'All Lives Matter' and 'white people suffer racism too' and 'taking the knee is a subservient gesture and I am not going to be subservient' [to black people I guess] plus some off topic Meghan Markle abuse has to find its way in there. I do despair at threads like that. If middle class mums on Mumsnet can have those attitudes then what hope for football hooligans.

Roussette · 13/07/2021 10:45

Covoid So agree with your comments. I was a bit taken aback with that thread to be honest. So far away from what I think. The not taking of the knee was all dressed up to 'I don't kneel to anyone, not even the Queen'
Spectacular missing of the point. Deliberately probably

Well, Dominic Raab did the whole 'I won't take the knee for anyone- except maybe my wife' schtick, so we know where it comes from. Like someone said upthread the fish rots from the head down.

Yes the All Lives Matter brigade are out in force on that thread and I'm going to have to hide it now before I get myself banned.

Hi @Orchidflower1 Smile

@Roussette I cried too when I read the letters he put up on his Twitter next to that statement. Little kids had written to him not to be sad about the racists etc. I'm really sad today. My little boy's face when we talked about what happened to Saka. I actually am starting to feel a lot of hatred and its not healthy.

If my DCs were still little they would be upset too, I know they were. As it is they are strapping adults and are furious.

I'm on a WhatsApp politicis group with their friends (they want an 'old' point of view lol) and it's on fire.

I forgot Raab and his stupid comment. Pathetic. Yep, the fish rots from the head, you are not wrong.

I'm interested to see how Patel responds, if at all.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 13/07/2021 12:11

I can' t remember if I've already postyed this but a 'comedian' tweeted a couple of racist things about the boys and has had his upcoming tour cancelled and his management has dropped him. He's now deleted his twitter even though he was initially unapologetic in the aftermath of his tweets.

Also really heartened that Tyrone Mings tweet was publicised. Natalie Elphicke tweet seems to be still under the radar somewhat though I think Angela Rayner gave her some stick, I so wish that the constituents of these MPs think very carefully who they are voting for next time round, naive is suppose but it always astounds me how the likes of Patel/Rees Mogg/Bridgen get voted in again & again.

She not only didn't condemn them but she said they have a right to boo them, 'quite frankly' Angry
