Racist abuse of Saka, Sancho and Rashford after penalty misses

This is why I don't support England and was dreading them winning as I don't think the fans deserve it. They don't deserve those boys.

The boys are English when they score goals but monkeys and the N word when they don't.

Rashford runs a campaign to feed starving kids and gets nothing but racial and other types of abuse week in week out. Sterling regularly vilified in the press for buying his mum a house and his wife shopping at Primark 🙄. Both rise above it and are nothing but professional in their measured comments. And they have to be or it would just get worse.

The right wing press if this country feeds the jingoism, racism and xenophobia and this place is just a cesspool now.

The lip service paid to the situation: the statements 'condeming' the racism and the pathetic kneeing (which the English fans have charmingly taken to booing). A nation that has to tell it's fans not to racially abuse its team because they lost a football game is not one to be proud of.

Well interestingly, I think they have , and should have, the legal right

What are the young people saying about this politically?

They are absolutely appalled at the racist backlash at the boys. They dislike the government, have no time for the likes of Johnson & Patel, they are remarkably well informed. My DD is quite the political activist so she has a lot to say.

They do have a view on PW's statement too, but I don't want to derail the thread

midgemagneto · 13/07/2021 13:03

It's not your thread , you are the OP. You say something In a public forum , I am allowed to disagree .

You don't support equality if you want to ban free speech , you just want to change who is on top

RedMarauder · 13/07/2021 13:33

@HmmmmmmInteresting

Next time you start a thread make sure your disclaimer is clear by not alternating the case of your letters and making it bold as unfortunately it appears some posters can't read.

I think social media needs to do more to address this.

Totally.

Individual people should take responsibility and suffer the consequences but so should the big SM outlets.

Remember how much revenue SM gets and look that the companies that are happy to use them.... do you really want to be part of that system?

C130 · 13/07/2021 14:14

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

I think the fact that people came out to 'take back' the mural and that the racism is getting condemned and action taken is a step forward. I thought about the racist Twitter posting estate agent guy that if people online can hunt down a guy who was cruel to a cat like in that documentary then surely it should be possible to find the racists too. I was feeling a bit hopeful.

Then I misguidedly went on the 'taking the knee thread' and felt depressed again. Full of 'All Lives Matter' and 'white people suffer racism too' and 'taking the knee is a subservient gesture and I am not going to be subservient' [to black people I guess] plus some off topic Meghan Markle abuse has to find its way in there. I do despair at threads like that. If middle class mums on Mumsnet can have those attitudes then what hope for football hooligans.

That is why I did not go on that thread. I could just imagine some of the inane comments on there. There will be a push back against anti-racism, from racists for sure. I just feel the tide could be turning, with some people who do not suffer from racism first hand seeing all of this, and saying we must do something about this, the scourge of racism.
C130 · 13/07/2021 14:16

Yes the social media should be banning accounts of people who are making nasty racist post. They can do this.

Do you just not want they opinion or any opinion that is different to yours ?

HmmmmmmInteresting · 13/07/2021 14:29

I wish these boys would just play for their countries of origin. If these guys don't appreciate you fuck them and let them get on with it and see how they get on.

So many amazing international players that could play for Jamaica, Senegal or Nigeria etc. Reminds me of Troy Deeney being asked to play for Jamaica and saying no thanks he wants to play for England...how's that going for you, Troy?

There aren't many Asian players in top flight football but I'm willing to bet if there were a lot would play for their country of origin.

I'm not just talking about England players- the French team for example.

Social media has a lot to answer for, they need to sort their shit out & clamp down hard on this. People get away with too much too easily. I don’t know what legally falls in to the category of a hate crime, but I’m sure some of the stuff I’ve seen must do. Just deleting it isn’t good enough, they should have some kind of system where it is reported, not just hidden away
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/07/2021 14:50

The not taking of the knee was all dressed up to 'I don't kneel to anyone, not even the Queen'

I also don't kneel to anyone, especially the queen. I don't use that to condemn an act of anti-racism that has nothing to do with subservience. It's just an excuse and a stupid, poor one at that. To me, it means 'I don't agree but I'm too cowardly to say so so I'll make up a excuse which people are too stupid to see is paper thin'. But we do see it.

I actually wonder if that act of defiance and support of each other in the face of booing helped the team get as far as they did. Some -idiots people thought it would hurt them.

nancy75 · 13/07/2021 15:00

What are they even talking about ‘I don’t kneel to anyone’? The players are not actually kneeling TO anyone either.
It just shows who the idiots are.

Dohrehmee · 13/07/2021 15:13

I blame the media for a substantial amount of this. They whipped everyone into a frenzy. Years ago they declared war on Germany. I remember thinking then it had gone too far.

The England team would not even be in the final if it wasn’t for the black players .

The abuse of the players is vile

My view is that England didn’t play as strongly . They lost their nerves. So why not have a healthy debate that England should have been more stronger . They could have been given more mental support . They should have gone all guns Blazing. Why didn’t Gareth make substitutions and the choices for who took penalties was a mistake . But that’s it , a mistake . Nerves probs played a part.
England have never had a great track record with penalties . You can debate about this match without putting in vile racist abuse or plain nastiness .

Orchidflower1 · 13/07/2021 15:40

I think you are totally right @Dohrehmee

I think the perfect storm of the media whipping up everything, the racists hiding behind SM and the ensuing bile they produced have stopped the perfectly legitimate debate about the football itself.

Just read this...

+UPDATE+

Planning for a reception with the Prime Minister at Downing Street with the England football team following their success at the #EURO2020 has now been discontinued.

Now whether the team declined or Johnson & Co guessed they might, and there would be serious amounts of egg on face, I don't know.

What happened will come out.

Football is akin to a religion in England. Hence the racism surrounding it will likely never be clamped down upon

The vast majority of racist abuse on SM aimed at English football players is not from England. The premiership carried out research on it. They found India to be the top racial abuser of English premiership players, followed by middle eastern countries

Roussette · 13/07/2021 16:02

Hmmmmm

It was on Twitter from someone with 36K followers. Followed up with this...
Some Briefing that it was "Downing Street's decision" not to go ahead with reception.

Hard to verify tho what the FA/Players' position would have been when the matter discussed.

Its also quite likely Govt trying "get ahead of the story" & players already decided against going.

(Disclaimer... I have no idea how true this is, but lots of the replies appear to verify it, but I take lots I read with a pinch of salt!)
