Racist abuse of Saka, Sancho and Rashford after penalty misses

This is why I don't support England and was dreading them winning as I don't think the fans deserve it. They don't deserve those boys.

The boys are English when they score goals but monkeys and the N word when they don't.

Rashford runs a campaign to feed starving kids and gets nothing but racial and other types of abuse week in week out. Sterling regularly vilified in the press for buying his mum a house and his wife shopping at Primark 🙄. Both rise above it and are nothing but professional in their measured comments. And they have to be or it would just get worse.

The right wing press if this country feeds the jingoism, racism and xenophobia and this place is just a cesspool now.

The lip service paid to the situation: the statements 'condeming' the racism and the pathetic kneeing (which the English fans have charmingly taken to booing). A nation that has to tell it's fans not to racially abuse its team because they lost a football game is not one to be proud of.

Exactly why I would never support England even though I was born here.

PicsInRed · 12/07/2021 12:27

Saka is only 19 years old, and at 19 he has done more already than most of his detractors Hmm will ever do in their entire lives. As have Sancho at only 21 and Rashford at only 23.

Rashford should be one to watch for greatness, yet he's been demonized since he...campaigned to feed hungry children during the pandemic. Hmm

How only earth was the Italian captain able to intentionally throttle Saka and walk away from that virtually unpunished? There hasn't been nearly enough commentary about this.

Watching Saka weep in Southgate's arms was absolutely heartbreaking.

Wtfdoipick · 12/07/2021 12:28

Saka is a teenager who has achieved amazing things, he's playing on an international stage. He and the other players are the reason I support the England football team. The racist thugs are not fans they are just thugs.

The players deserve our support.

@HmmmmmmInteresting

My eyes rolled so hard in my head when I woke up to the news that Bozo had 'condemned' the racist abuse. He's part of the reason why racism has ramped up so much over the last few years. The figurehead of the country is a known racist and so racists are now emboldened. Priti Patel encouraged fans to boo players taking the knee against racism. It's dog whistle politics, but the whistle must be broken because it's audible to us all.

Its actually a good thing because people like the Savilles guy wouldn't have been exposed if he didn't feel emboldened to.

This 100% I hope that all perpetrators can be tracked down & charged the sickening thing is, that once those penalties were saved/missed you damm well knew what would happen im so depressed today not because they lost but the aftermath.
Beamur · 12/07/2021 12:30

I've avoided reading stuff about this. So pathetically predictable.
The whole team deserves nothing but respect for getting to the final. Football fans are tainted by this kind of behaviour.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/07/2021 12:31

Hmm. While the absolute worst of England has been on display over the last 24hrs (and not just the racism), I don't think we can pretend the racism is only limited to England and doesn't happen in football across the UK.

Unsuremover · 12/07/2021 12:35

I genuinely don’t understand how they can continue to play in the face of that. Like I would be needed to lock myself away, so they have my utmost respect (I dont like football at all so that’s all I can offer).

The best way to “show racism the red card” would be to stop the game if any racism (or sectarianism in my part of the world) is heard. Like literally, red picks up the ball and everyone goes home, game rescheduled, but tickets aren’t refunded. If players then can’t play for the national team cause they are back at the club well so be it. Watch how quickly everyone suddenly knows who caused the problem and can keep their vile thoughts to themselves. After all no one show have to work getting racist abuse. Really needs a hardline on this.

Redcrayons · 12/07/2021 12:36

The minute Rashford walked towards the penalty spot I knew this would happen. Win or lose.
Utterly disgusting.

OnlyCans · 12/07/2021 12:37

I am lucky to have only seen posts condemning anyone who would dare speak ill of the team. I have no doubt that these tweets are out there and it makes me sick. I hope those sending out these messages receive the full force of the law.

They have been amazing and should be treated as the champions they are. There have been some beautiful moments of sportsmanship from them. They are for the people and they are being failed by the people.

Agree with every word. Boris Johnson has been complicit in stoking racism in this country. As the saying goes, fish rots from the head.

Nice idea but won't work. You can't "punish" 60,000 people for the actions of a handful. It's like the lazy teachers who do "whole class detentions". We need to find ways of continuing to weed out the minority of trouble makers. Increased standards of security staff would be a start - people who have the balls to target the real offenders rather than going after the easy targets.
Tubbs99 · 12/07/2021 12:38

We watched it last night and said that the 3 players who missed would be getting racist abuse in T minus 15. So disgusting but sadly predictable

Marauder1994 · 12/07/2021 12:42

It's absolutely abhorrent. I knew straight away that these disgusting people would use those poor boys as scapegoats. Those poor boys who are wonderful and have lifted the entire nation for weeks, have done so much for communities, children and worldwide issues.

I am utterly disgusted. I am so sorry for their behaviour.

Redcrayons · 12/07/2021 12:42

@FloodgatesofHell

I read that most of the racist comments came from accounts abroad, not from the uk
Whilst bots on twitter are certInly a problem, let’s not pretend that there aren’t huge swathes of vile racist arseholes in this country.
midgemagneto · 12/07/2021 12:44

Rashford mural vandalised, that's not some foreign bot

BitterTits · 12/07/2021 12:47

I genuinely think it's a grotesque manifestation of some white men's barely-conscious awareness of their own inadequacy. Entirely inexcusable. The people they aim their hatred at are infinitely more talented and the racists know it.

Lampzade · 12/07/2021 12:47

Racist scums.
Reminds me of when Linford Christie won a gold medal in the Olympics and was hailed a British hero. When cheating accusations were levelled against him he was described as ‘Jamaican’ born

In fairness that happens to Andy Murray. British when he wins, Scottish when he loses Grin
namechange90832 · 12/07/2021 12:58

And people wonder why there is so much shame surrounding the English flag. Incidents like this for me. I'm so sorry, it's utterly shameful.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 12/07/2021 13:00

This is so sad
My first thought about them missing was that they are all so young. I thought maybe Southgate should not have put them up for it and I thought why not Sterling or Shaw instead because they had more experience.
Southgate said the decisions are his and they are not to blame.
Genuinely their age was the thing that I thought they had in common and the fact that they are all black and Kane and Maguire are white had not crossed my mind until opening this thread.
Its mind blowing that that is where some people's minds would go to that they somehow missed because they are black.
Then you realise that the saddest thing of all is that those poor boys would almost certainly already know that if they miss they will get extra abuse for being black.
All that talk of how proud everyone is of our multi racial team appears it was very hollow in some places.
I saw a recent interview with John Barnes where he absolutely called this in advance. He said it is fine as long as they are winning but he was afraid what would be said if they lose and he really wasn't wrong. He's obviously speaking form his own personal experience but I genuinely thought 25 years later maybe things had changed. Sad

littleburn · 12/07/2021 13:07

Totally agree OP. It's the most disgusting and shameful behaviour. I hope those who are identified lose their jobs. There has to be real life consequences for these actions, not just condemnation.

Unsuremover · 12/07/2021 13:07

@Kazzyhoward your not punishing 60,000 people like a teacher. Kids don’t have a choice about being in class, anyone can choose to go ot not go to a football game, knowing racist abuse is likely. And imagine how many people would join in with a chant or monkey noises know that the next step was going home? It’s a serious move but it’s a serious bloody problem! All the condemning tweets from mealy mouthed politicians isn’t getting the job done!

Lilypansy · 12/07/2021 13:07

The people shouting racist abuse must surely be identifiable, there were cameras everywhere.
So, why are they not prosecuted? I get sick of the hand wringing and lip service comments. Identify and prosecute.
The wider problem doesn't go away, though. Even if people are strongly discouraged from giving voice to their racism, nothing alters their opinions. That is what is so shameful.

User5827372728 · 12/07/2021 13:17

It’s so utterly disgraceful and depressing. I’m so glad my boys are only 2&4 and haven’t faced this yet. I’m dreading the day they realise racism is rife.

I hope they all get named and shamed and prosecuted/fires from their jobs and held accountable.

Dyrne · 12/07/2021 13:27

It’s not just an England problem though - and I’m not saying that to excuse racist behaviour; it’s sickening to see and shouldn’t be tolerated.

Italian fans have a long history of racism against their own players and Russian fans “trained” for violence in the 2018 World Cup like it was a sodding MMA fight.

Football as a whole has a massive issue with violence and racism and it needs to be tackled internationally, not allowed to be dismissed by other football associations as just an England problem.

Agree the one ray of light has been the outpouring of support I’ve seen on social media and condemnation of abuse.
