Racist abuse of Saka, Sancho and Rashford after penalty misses

This is why I don't support England and was dreading them winning as I don't think the fans deserve it. They don't deserve those boys.

The boys are English when they score goals but monkeys and the N word when they don't.

Rashford runs a campaign to feed starving kids and gets nothing but racial and other types of abuse week in week out. Sterling regularly vilified in the press for buying his mum a house and his wife shopping at Primark 🙄. Both rise above it and are nothing but professional in their measured comments. And they have to be or it would just get worse.

The right wing press if this country feeds the jingoism, racism and xenophobia and this place is just a cesspool now.

The lip service paid to the situation: the statements 'condeming' the racism and the pathetic kneeing (which the English fans have charmingly taken to booing). A nation that has to tell it's fans not to racially abuse its team because they lost a football game is not one to be proud of.

Here's the scary part. The people making these racist remarks online are our GPs, policemen/women, they are teaching our kids in school and smiling to us in the face when the walk past us in the street. Their lovely wives are busy telling us they are so sorry, at best, or at worst being silent and pretending to not know what is going on. Think Susan Reid!!! kmt

@User5827372728

It’s so utterly disgraceful and depressing. I’m so glad my boys are only 2&4 and haven’t faced this yet. I’m dreading the day they realise racism is rife.

I hope they all get named and shamed and prosecuted/fires from their jobs and held accountable.

One of my DSs wanted to go out on our road after the match out of nosiness. My other DS said, and I quote: 'Im not going out in the street being brown!'

I'm so out of touch with the news and was shocked (I know, stupid) to learn about this. "A nation that has to tell it's fans not to racially abuse its team because they lost a football game is not one to be proud of." So true. Those poor men.

RedMarauder · 12/07/2021 14:19

@Dyrne

It’s not just an England problem though - and I’m not saying that to excuse racist behaviour; it’s sickening to see and shouldn’t be tolerated.

Italian fans have a long history of racism against their own players and Russian fans “trained” for violence in the 2018 World Cup like it was a sodding MMA fight.

Football as a whole has a massive issue with violence and racism and it needs to be tackled internationally, not allowed to be dismissed by other football associations as just an England problem.

Agree the one ray of light has been the outpouring of support I’ve seen on social media and condemnation of abuse.

This is whataboutery.

There is nothing stopping the FA cleaning up football in England.

Clean up your own backyard before you barge into someone else's.

Pinkbrush · 12/07/2021 14:20

It’s disgusting and i am heartbroken for those players. Like someone else said, i knew exactly what was coming and i’m sure they did too. This country has a deep problem.

I also find it difficult to support England because of the fans.

Dyrne · 12/07/2021 14:38

@RedMarauder I’m sorry - definitely didn’t mean it as whataboutery.

I think my comments are more thinking about comments on other forums/threads and I’ve been frustrated about the amount of symbolic hand-wringing without actually reflecting on the wider issue (lots of people condemning last night like it’s a one-off and saying the Italian’s “deserved” to win because of that, which completely ignores the deeply embedded racist and violent culture that exists within football as a whole).

But you’re right, they have no place on this thread as without context it definitely comes across as whataboutery.

huniepop · 12/07/2021 14:46

Whilst bots on twitter are certInly a problem, let’s not pretend that there aren’t huge swathes of vile racist arseholes in this country.

I agree but I just came to say they aren't bots. Bots are automated accounts that spam the same thing. An account racially abusing black players is a troll account

Commenting as a white person It’s awful to think that people I interact with and are on the surface decent human beings are actually harbouring thoughts like this. Unfortunately not all racists are fat pink faced men wearing a Union Jack emblazoned clothing As soon as those penalties were missed I told DH what would happen. What I don’t understand is where it comes from, does it get passed down through generations? Does it come from SM? How is it still so common place? I think the likes of Trump and Johnson have made Racism more acceptable and Brexit didn’t help but I just dont understand why these young men who have done so well not only on but off the pitch should be subjected to this Makes me sad and ashamed

Savilles, the estate agency, is investigating as they have information that indicates one of their staff is involved in the abuse.
10Minutestobedtime · 12/07/2021 15:15

I didn't watch, but I heard and I knew the racism would come :(.

PrincessMyshkin · 12/07/2021 15:15

It's absolutely disgraceful. It wouldn't be acceptable if they were terrible footballers but what highlights how unsportsmanlike, ungracious and doltish this behaviour is is how much these three have achieved, under such high pressure at such young ages. Not to mention the great work Rashford has taken it upon himself to do for the wider community.

What I can't understand is how spectators doing this goes unpunished. There is extensive camera footage available of the crowd, so I wonder why more can't be done to identify the culprits and have them prosecuted and banned from future matches? There need to be consequences and disincentives. People presumably have seat numbers which would help identify them. Maybe the FA could subsidise some of this work with the police. Additionally, it would be good to have more security staff present for this purpose, briefed with ejecting anyone acting like this.

Window1 · 12/07/2021 15:25

A zero tolerance approach needs to be taken to this behaviour. Much much more needs to be done.

Starseeking · 12/07/2021 15:40

I felt so sorry for them all, especially Bukayo Saka at just 19. Apparently he's had to close all his social media since last night. If I'd been any of their mothers I'd have advised them to stand at the back of the queue for taking penalties.

When Gazza cried at World Cup 90 he was hailed a hero, when Southgate missed his penalty at Euro 96, he received commercial sponsorships...somehow I doubt any of that is/will be happening for Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford or Jason Sancho.

I'm also now hearing that Black people have been attacked following the result, and I'd never go to a football match for fear of being assaulted.

Roussette · 12/07/2021 15:54

Totally agree OP.

On the Savills guy... I woke up to this. Savills have responded that they are investigating but as of now, they haven't announced anything further.
Except half an hour ago, they have posted that they have handed it over to Greater Manchester Police as the man in question said his account was 'taken over by a third party.'

I just don't understand that to be honest. And how does it explain his second account, which is even more disgusting.
And the fact he was tweeting dodgy stuff back in March.

Interesting tweet - twitter.com/SayeedaWarsi/status/1414534994219913221

Priti -we as govt, as @Conservatives
need to think about our role in feeding this culture in our country
If we “whistle” & the”dog” reacts we cant be shocked if it barks &bites
It’s time to stop the culture wars that are feeding division
Dog whistles win votes but destroy nations

ObviousNameChage · 12/07/2021 16:04

The saddest thing about this is that it was so disgustingly predictable. I knew last night when I went to bed that we'd wake up to this.

Exactly. A I said earlier its not even 'dog whistle' any more because the call is not only audible but deafeningly loud.

I’m devastated by this. For Saka especially because he has such a baby face and is so young. The team all seem like such decent guys as well. I’d really been enjoying the Euros this year. For pretty much the first time in my life I got interested in football and got behind England. As a black woman, previously I would feel scared if I saw a load of England fans with beers on the train or whatever, and I remember boys at school making racist comments about black players.

But this year felt different - taking the knee, wearing pride symbols. I know I was not alone in feeling part of the England fan base for the first time. Unfortunately as soon as I saw that black players were taking penalties I had to leave the room - I knew how it was going to end. The violence and hatred that goes with football is just despicable and there need to be tighter sanctions.

I really hope the team - especially the black players - know how much they’ve meant to so many people this year and they get plenty of support. Having your whole worth as a person and your sense of belonging challenged constantly is like slow torture.

Roussette · 12/07/2021 16:18

Priti Vile Patel must think we're all stupid. She said fans are entitled to boo the kneeling thereby enabling this.

She's either thick or she doesn't mean a word she says when condemning the racism.

Or more likely both.
marmaladehound · 12/07/2021 16:37

It's embarrassing to be English after this tbh! I would probably like football if it wasn't for the violence and racism from the supposed fans. You're right these fans do not deserve any of the team, they are all far too good for them especially Rashford, who is bloody amazing!

Maggiethecat · 12/07/2021 16:46

Those players should hold their heads up high. Saka in particular can feel proud that his work during the tournament helped the team reach the finals.

As the game approached penalties last night I said to dh that I hoped Sterling would not take one as the pressure on him, being constantly vilified by press and country, would be too great. I'm glad he didn't take one.

I do wonder the extent of the extra pressure black players feel knowing that any miss will be followed by racist abuse and how this ultimately affects their penalty taking.

I hope they are heartened though by the large support and encouragement so many have offered them.

dannydyerismydad · 12/07/2021 16:55

That team is made up of remarkable young men who should be bloody proud of what they have achieved on and off the pitch. Their families too have played a huge part in making them the responsible role models they are.

I'm disgusted at the way they've been treated by "fans". Maybe not all fans but a large and very loud minority.

I'm proud that my son gets to look up to these guys as role models, especially compared to the petulant spoiled idiots I grew up watching.

I am so, so sad and disappointed at they way they are being treated. And I'm sad and bloody furious that black British people are being made to feel uncomfortable, here, at home in their own country.

Lndnmummy · 12/07/2021 17:54

It’s awful and heart breaking. Have spent the day trying to keep my two boys offline. My husband is an ex player many moons ago (not national player) and despite he total love for the game does not want our children to play. Our eldest is pretty good but we just don’t want him in that environment. It’s heartbreaking. Seeking Saka last night broke my heart.
