Space - lots of {{{{Hugs}}}} - its a funny day - I remember when pregnant with dd feeling very sad for what wasn't but happy for being pregnant again and Happy Birthday!

The 10 appointments for first pregnancy and 7 for second are from the NICE guidelines - they were only published in Oct 2003 - so have probably only been implemented in the last 12 months or so - and appointments get loads more frequent after 20 weeks. I'm high risk but have only seen the midwife twice and the second time was because of the twins - I didn't need to otherwise.

nice guidelines

chloe55 · 24/08/2005 12:06

I'm back from my appointment. They listened to the heart again and apparantly Nemo is still vigorously flipping about inside. I have rung a place in Leeds that do 4d scans and they advertise that optimum time is between 22-28 weeks but they can scan much earlier and they are showing a 4d image of a 12 week baby yet when I asked for an appointment next week (at 16 weeks) she seemed totally against it. I said that I wanted one at that time due to me missing my 12 week scan but she was adamant that I should have it later and that I could have a 2d one - extra cost obviously - at this stage but she advised against the 4d. I wish I had just put my foot down now because the 12 week pic is very clear and if they are not bullsh*tting that they can achieve the results that they post on their website then I would be more than happy to have my baby scanned at 16 weeks. Had a look at another place in Barnsley but they are more expensive and won't scan until 20 weeks. Whats the point in saying they can scan at more or less any age and then try and put you off?!

Oh and Happy Birthday SC

TicTac · 24/08/2005 15:03

Chloe, would you like me to call as a different client and see what she says? I am being done at 18.5 weeks and they where more then happy to do that alhthough they did say it would not be quite as detailed as some of the pictures you see online.
I can't see what the problem is myself!

Thanks TicTac but I think I am just gonna put my foot down tomorrow and say that I want to have it at 16/17 weeks regardless. At the end of the day all she can do is refuse and it's her that will dip out on 190 quid. Was gonna be a chicken and email them but I bet the same lady who answers the phone would answer the email and suss it was me! I can't see what there problem is either - have calmed down now but it just seems no-one wants to give me a bl**dy scan when I ask them at the moment!!!!!

Tabs · 24/08/2005 16:18

Gosh some people! You'd think they'd be glad to get your money at any time really wouldn't you?! I mean it's nice that they want you to have the best possible pics, but really!!

JuA - well remembered - it was the NICE guidelines I read it in - knew it was something that I'd had from the midwife!

Spacecadet - hugs and happy birthday! Let's all have a toast with virtual champagne, as it's the only kind we can have at the moment!

Tabs · 24/08/2005 16:20

Forgot to mention earlier - Chip had heart rate of 135 this morning, nice and clear. It definitely seems to be getting easier to find now .

Anybody know where we can buy more doppler gel? Asked in Boots, but they were a bit clueless! Said if I gave them a brand name or something then they might be able to get in a generic, but TBH I don't think they even knew what it was I was asking for!

teuch · 24/08/2005 19:26

hullo all...been busy and not ahd a chance to catch up on here but thanks for all the kind thoughts and can i echo them for the others that have similar experiences xx

I am getting myself all worked up about my blood screening results a the moment...we decided to go with the screening tests so that we would have time to accept and adjust should they indicate anything untoward, rather than because we would take any further action, but my head's a mess with it.

I am doing training on dsability issues as well at the moment so it is just 'right there' at the front of my mind ALL THE TIME..WAAAHHHHH!!

Apart from that - SIL had a lovely, scrumptious girl AFTER midnight! If I wasn't expecting a baby already, she would make me want one!!

Frizbe · 24/08/2005 19:30

Hi all glad your all ok and happy birthday SC!
I'm guessing they don't want to scan before 20 weeks, for the 4d, as with you not having a 12 week scan they don't want to be the ones to have to break any bad news if there is any.....I'm guessing they want the hospital to scan you 1st, that way if there are any issues, you will be aware of them 1st......

Frizbe · 24/08/2005 19:31

Congrats to you SIL Teuch!

chloe55 · 25/08/2005 09:02

Morning all,

I guess you're right Frizbe, never thought of it that way. Might still try again today and if I have no joy then I will just be patient and wait for my 20 week scan.

Teuch - I was in the same predicament as you with regards to the screen testing. We knew the results wouldn't alter our plans so after much deliberation we decided it was better not to find out. I understand what you mean about wanting 'to prepare' if the results were not as hoped because we thought about this too. In the end we just decided that if that was the case could we ever prepare for that? Also, my MIL (midwife) said that if results showed inclinations of Downs then most doc/hospital will strongly advise you to abort and I don't think my nerves could be strong enough for that. Obviously the decision is a hard one and everyone has a different opinion but I just wanted to share what me and DH talked about with you.

chloe55 · 25/08/2005 09:02

Hope you are feeling better TicTac

ixel · 25/08/2005 09:31

Tabs.. Kai isn't too bad an idea!
Have you tried sports shops for doppler gel; I'm sure you can use the same stuff as you put on those vibrating muscle toners?

flamesparrow · 25/08/2005 09:33

You're joking Chloe - they urge you to abort????

chloe55 · 25/08/2005 09:40

I don't know from my own experience Flame but they certainly do in one of the Burnley hospitals(where MIL is from) she is dead against abortion under any circumstance and said she used to go home in tears with how some of the docs would make women feel if their results showed positive for Downs.

I was worried they might object about me not having the test but they seemed happy with my decision, I guess they have to be though.

flamesparrow · 25/08/2005 09:43

That is so so sad.

It is everyone's right to make that choice, but it has to be their choice - there is no way someone with that much authority should be able to influence the choice like that... its like a teacher sleeping with student!

Sorry - i know none of you guys need the rant

chloe55 · 25/08/2005 09:43

Please though, I don't want any of my posts/opinions to put doubt into anyone's minds re the tests - I can not speak for all hospitals and doctors and certainly don't want to be offending anyone is that profession - God, I'm gonna get slated on this website soon !

TicTac · 25/08/2005 11:06

Hi All,

TABS - I read in my Doppler info that you can replace gel with a good moisturiser and the only fnction it permorms is to create a seal between you and the doppler. Why not try it before you buy more gell. Failing that you can buy doppler gel on the internet..

CHLOE - Nobody would slate you on here hun, everyone is entitled to an opinion and the only experiences we have to reflect on are our own...things like the downs test are all very personal decisions to make

I am not feeling too bad today, back in work. So bunged up though, really getting to me. I am going to look like such a tramp on Saturday shoving a tissue up my nose every 5 minutes!

Sorry for really long post but went to friends last night, she has a 6yr old and 2.5yr old who is adorable. Anyway he was very loving and we get on like a house on fire. Friend sent me a text this morning saying that when he wok in the night he didn't want mummy or daddy he wanted aunty "aydee"....hee hee hee. He is enought to melt my heart he really is

aww thanks everyone for the happy birthday wishes chloe, when i booked my 2d scan with dd they sugested not having it done till 16 weeks, and later for 4d scans, babybond told me thast the 4d scan was much better after 20 weeks, i had a 2d scan at 19 weeks last time, before i had my 20 week scan and babybond say that they are non diagnostic but they ask where you are booked to have baby and if they spot anything really obvious, they contact the hospital, but tbh,i dont know how true that is.

Diddle · 25/08/2005 13:07

Happy Birthday Spacecadet - I know this will be a tough day for you, its your due date too isn;t it. Hope you have a great day, and that all is going well with your pregnancy.

Diddle · 25/08/2005 13:15

just read down, can't believe you're 16 weeks already, and sorry for crashing your thread.

spacecadet · 25/08/2005 16:11

thankyou so much diddle, it was a strange day really, hard not to think about what might have been.
i try not to think too much at the mo.

TicTac · 25/08/2005 17:05

We'll miss you TicTac - there'll be no-one to talk to over the weekend!! And then I won't be on much on Mon or Tues, as I'm off visiting people!

Have a fun wedding. Going to a reception tomorrow night myself actually. Quite looking forward to it, as haven't seen the bride and groom for ages, so they don't even know that I'm pregnant yet.

flamesparrow · 25/08/2005 18:11

Would KY Jelly not work as a doppler gel?
