GettingBiggerBird · 09/12/2008 15:03

Hi all, just back from yet another hospital visit, but this one a bit more productive. Had a sweep and found out I'm already 3cms dilated. Not a lot of BH/contraction action though, but maybe it will just do it in secret . My consultant reckoned I'll have them within the week, and even if not, I won't need any chemical induction to get me started, they can just rupture the membranes if I get beyond my tether. Now to just ry and wait patiently. G&B will help...

traceface · 09/12/2008 15:04

Kayz - am also being a clumsy oaf today...this morning I knocked over the same glass of water 3 times!!! I blame pregga brain and loss of sense of balance and lack of sleep...!!!
Am just off into York for a stroll and am going to look out for some G+B...have to find out what all the fuss is about!

Veggiemummy · 09/12/2008 15:18

oh Bisoooooooo here I am hungry and you go and mention monte carlos yuuuuuummmmmm. Right that is another thing mum will have to bring over a packet of Arnotts assortment.

Yoga was good. But no class next week and next one will be jan 6th. Two of us are due before then but we are going to pop in with our wee ones.

OrangeCrush · 09/12/2008 15:25

I know I only dip in and out but usually takes me so long to catch up on all your posts that I need a lie down when I'm done.

Anyway, there seems to have been much 'sweeping' going on today and thought I'd join in

Have just had mine, and thought it was going to be the answer to my prayers, but have come away feeling really dissapointed because not even started dilating and MW couldn't complete it Now just feel really achy, and like Traceface am bleeding which is weirdly shocking after 9 months of no periods!

I nearly went through the roof as she was fiddling about and now also really worried that I have no hope of getting through labour on just G&A like I was hoping.

MW's parting shot was that it probably wouldn't have done anything and I have to wait another week for another sweep. joy.

babblington · 09/12/2008 15:42

getting bigger bird - Dandelion root is fine in pregnancy and even recommended. If it is PUPPPS it will respond well to cold - cold showers and ice packs directly on the itch. If this does not help it is probably not PUPPPS. I know its a little cold for this! I was induced with dd2 with this condition, and have had it 3 times in this pregnancy. If you want to chat you can reach me on [email protected]

Veggiemummy · 09/12/2008 16:43

GBB I meant to say the other day that while I love homeopathic care have never found it to help with rashes or itching. DS had dermatitis and had to resort to conventisl stuff for it. I'm not def about the dandelion root tea but someone mentioned it once before for pregnancy odema so must be ok during pregnacy.

artichokes · 09/12/2008 17:02

Arrrgghhh - I think this morning's sweep was a dud. Last week's sweep at least resulted in a show, this one seems to have done nothing at all, no show, no blood, no pains... I just went for a 90 minute walk, pushing myself as hard as I could, and still nothing (I feel for you OrangeCrush).

zoejeanne · 09/12/2008 17:10

Hi everyone, hope you?re all well and those with birthdays recently had lots of fun?

Mibbes ? Evan is a real cutie, so small and tiny and lovely!

And Beans ? congratulations on the arrival of Isabella, she sounds adorable. And congratulations to snorris too for Lucy ? 10lbs ? wow! And to penny on Xavier?s (painless!) arrival. So many lovely new babies
Oh and have we heard anything from modernlove since she went into labour? Hope I haven?t missed a birth.

Verso ? 2 great nights in a row, well done to DD2 and to you, that?s great!

Effie ? how was your last day at work? I can?t remember being at work, even though it was only 2 weeks ago! And my DH is also too busy to become a father before Christmas and is telling baby so every night ? but if babyZJ?s timekeeping is anything like his father it will be shockingly late!

Trace ? your DH is a star to arrange a lie in and pizza trip for you, enjoy it all, it sounds fab!

Jolly ? I?m also finding my days on ML really busy and people keep saying why don?t we meet up and I can?t find time to fit them in! I?m doing our tree tomorrow, which I?m looking forward to as well

Reban ? hope you?re not too sore after your fall?

WG ? your tea party sounds so lovely, your friends are fab!

PD ? love your choice of name, especially Camille, I think that?s beautiful! And the pictures were lovely too. And JJ ? your daughter is a beauty too ? I?m starting to worry I might be the first to produce an ugly baby!

Oli ? what a worry for you, with the chicken pox. I hope this week flies and the results on Friday are good.

Trace ? Green and blacks is the best chocolate ever, my fave is the maya gold, mmm, you must try it, apparently chocolate reduces the risk of pre eclampsia (I read it in the newspaper, so it must be true). How are you feeling after the sweep?

I?ve had a lovely couple of days ? yesterday my Mum and I took my Gran out (she lives in a home in West Yorkshire, so I don?t see her as often as I?d like). It?s still a bit icy over there, but my Mum is pretty good at manoeuvring my Gran in and out of the wheelchair ? but yesterday Gran kept on swinging round whilst balancing on icy bits trying to check I wasn?t falling over, and my Mum was nearly sliding on her bum down the road trying to keep both of them upright. I just stood on a none icy bit laughing at the 2 of them!! It was strange when we left though, and I said ?next time I see you I?ll bring your great grand child over? ? scary stuff! And today I had my last haircut as a none mother, it feels like a real countdown!

I?ve also not had heartburn for a couple of days, which has been a relief, but also I?ve not had any raspberry leaf tea. When I got in today I had a cup and the heartburn started again ? do you think the 2 could be related? I started with both last week, so I wonder ?

DH has just called ? he?s on his way home from his last work overnight trip for 5 weeks ? hurrah! I?m really looking forward to having him around, just hope baby isn?t too late so he gets lots of time before having to scoot off again in January.

Off to aquanatal now, have a good evening all x

Veggiemummy · 09/12/2008 17:23

ZJ I have been told that fruit teas can make the indigestion worse. I have fund on the 2 evenings that I have had RLT that the heartburn has been a little worse.

kayzisexpecting · 09/12/2008 17:57

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The kitchen has just flooded. The pipe was blocked and the washing machine was on. So all the water went back up the pipe and out of the sink.

We're going to have a takeaway tonight. Neither of us feel up to cooking at all now.

Hope everyone is ok and having better days than I am.

emmanbump · 09/12/2008 18:00

Poor you Kayz for you. Hope you have managed to unblock the pipe and wipe up all the water. Enjoy your take away.

waitinggirl · 09/12/2008 18:08

hello all - can i just ask? why are people having sweeps? have you gone over your due dates, or is this to get things stimulated for early/prompt arrival? a little confused first timer here.

had 38 week mw appt - she simply couldn't find the head so i got whipped down to a different department to have a mini scan to see and then another mw felt where the head was. 8 weeks ago i was apparently fully engaged, but not any more. it's down, but 3/5 palpable so she recommended doing lots of walking/walking uphill. is there anything else i should be doing to get sproglet engaged - or is it all that optimal fetal positioning stuff? have been ill and lying down for most of the last 10 days, so that may explain something?

i also spotted that there was a trace of protein found in my urine, so they are sending that off - the mw didn't mention it, i found it in my notes and had to ask someone else about it. that doesn't make me feel great, although i know it's unlikely to be a problem.

feeling a little deflated after this mw appt - normally i'm fine, bouncing around and feeling confident, but suddenly the confidence has left me. doesn't help that dh couldn't come with me as there was a last minute meeting (and he is coming to see me graduate tomorrow, so couldn't take too much time off).

and the mw said to see my gp mw in 2 weeks, but i think i will make an appointment for next week - i just want to keep in touch, really.

Veggiemummy · 09/12/2008 18:21

Oh katz not good. Poor you lots of towels and if any of them get ruined you can always wash them and use them for the birth then throw away.

WG I was going to ask about the sweep thing to ibhave never heard of it before is it a new thing. I think 3/5ths is good I was that at 37 & 38 weeks and MW was happy with it I think as long as they are head down that's good. Also I had trace of protein in my urine my entire pregnancy with DS but because I had no other adverse symptoms they were fine with it. Have had it once this time but again no worries. Still it would be nice if they explained things to you.

LadyThompson · 09/12/2008 18:36

Oooh, sweeps don't sound like a barrel of laughs. You poor things

Kayz, that is a pisser of the highest order. Enjoy your takeaway and forgeddaboudit.

Well done, Pen! Two paracetamol??? Great Scott, girl, you are a trooper. Lovely names (I keep marvelling about what a truly tasteful bunch we are) and I can't wait to hear all about it.

Health Visitor came today. She was like an officious Judi Dench. I was miffed because DP gave her my Your Ladyship mug but he pointed out (later) that all the decent ones were in the dishwasher and the only ones left bore the following slogans: Hot Pants, I Love Sex and I'm Not a Slut, I'm Just Popular. She didn't like DD's name. When we told her what it was there was a long pause in which she had a face like a jet of effluent had been squirted up her nostrils and she said "Is it a family name?" which at least three other people have said so I think we can safely say that's code for "Cor blimey, what a monstrous name". When we told her the middle names she remarked that it was a good job we'd given her other names to choose from. Flippin' cheek. As IF I care what anyone else thinks

Anyway, this is just a quickie. More later as I have to wake DP up.

GettingBiggerBird · 09/12/2008 18:44

Babblngton, thanks for the advice again, I'm going for it with the dandelion root, and cold baths do help if not that pleasant!

WG - I didn't have sweeps with my DD until I was overdue, but with twins, 40 weeks is really the limit before you get a lot of pressure to induce, so the consultants are happy to starts sweeps earlier. TBH, I can barely move and just want to get on with it.

Have just had a lovely nap, off for my tea now.

traceface · 09/12/2008 18:46

LT what a cheeky HV!!! Your choice of name is beautiful! (and none of her business!)

Sweep...well my consultant was going to do it last week (38 weeks) because I was so poorly with pre-eclampsia last time that they didn't really want me to get to full term. Seeing how well my BP is behaving they put it off a week and did it today (39+2). Because of my section last time they said they can't induce me, so if the sweeps don't work I'll get another section. Think they're just being cautious, as in the longer they leave me the more chance of my BP rising, so they're happy to try to move things a little early. Don't know why others have had them done - I think under 'normal' circumstances they only do it once you're at 41 weeks ish before trying an induction.

Anyway since I had it I've had either more dramatic BHs or mild contractions - don't know which! It's about every 10 mins at the moment and it's not excruciating but it's more than previous BHs. It goes tight at the top and crampy at the bottom of my belly, but is easily bearable, so I doubt it's the real thing. Am still bleeding a bit from this morning but my friend had 3 sweeps and bled like that after each one, so am not worried about that!

hattyyellow · 09/12/2008 18:48

Lady T I'm horrified at your health visitor! Could she not just have been polite, even if it wasn't a name she'd chosen!

I hate health visitors. We had one lovely one when we lived in NZ for a year, but our local one here manages to always make me feel like a rubbish mum.

Keep meaning to ask how you are adjusting to country life?

Congratulations to snorris and penny! what lovely news!

Arti your big day will come soon! A friend told me today to do lots of squatting and bouncing and to walk like Charlie Chaplin to get things moving...might entertain the neighbours!

I'm still getting lots of backache and got woken up in the night last night by really achey tummy cramps, still lots of energy - but nada. Baby can come any day from Thursday as my mum arrives then to look after DD's.

Indith my DD's have changed their behaviour a bit...the nursery thought it might be related to the new baby but I'm not sure, it mainly revolves around refusing to get dressed and eat - with lots of tears and tantrums..hope your DS is okay, I'm sure you're doing a great job and he'll come through okay..

kayzisexpecting · 09/12/2008 18:51

I am actually half hoping I don't go into labour tonight. Isn't bad luck meant to come in 3's? Well I melted the trays, the kitchen flooded so that is 2 things. I am dreading the 3rd.

LadyT, ignore the HV. Your DD has a beautiful name. HV's are generally useless(well in my experience)

Dad is here(well at his B&B), DS has been running round like a loon, jumping on him, trying to pull everything out of his rucksack.

Veggie My dad has committed a huge sin. He has got DS and BabyKayz Manchester City toys!!!! I will admit very very quietly that they are very cute.

traceface · 09/12/2008 18:52

my friend told me about a website : contractionmaster.com - basically you hit spacebar at the beginning and end of each contraction and it tells you how long it was and how long the gaps are between each one. It's free and handy if you've not got a clock/watch with a second hand.
Will try to link it
www.contractionmaster.com

SummerLightning · 09/12/2008 18:52

Evening everyone,
Urgh feeling full and heartburny and a bit sick after work Christmas lunch. Obviuosly had to put up with all the "Haven't you had it yet?" rubbish.

Congrats to penny!! And only two paracetamol, that is impressive!!

oli I really hope everything stays put til Friday and fingers crossed on the immunity. I'm sure it's pretty hopeful all will be fine, but it is stress you don't need right now!

LadyT you had me actually loling there with your list of mugs. Haha, I would have gone with "I'm not a slut, I'm just popular" myself.
And I can just picture her. How rude on her saying it was a good job you'd given her other names!! Cheeky bloody cow.

Indith · 09/12/2008 18:56

Oh Kayz you poor things. Take away sounds good to me!

Am cringing for all the sweeps, tis so uncomfortable! Orange don't worry about comparing sweep to labour, labour is natural, having someone stuff their fingers in your cervix is not! Dont' you all get too disheartened though, remember a sweep will only set you off if you are ready to go, and even then isn't a miracle. Personally I won't bother with one unless I have induction looming.

LadyT how rude! Your HV that is.

Effie Calpol doens't seem to make any difference, went through a lot before I conceeded that! One molar left to come so I keep pondering teeth but don't think so.

Glad I'm not the only one with a stroppy toddler. Been reading up on night terrors since other peole have suggested them too. There are some things that fit, although they are not the same as last time he had a phase of them. Still I Suppose he is older now

SummerLightning · 09/12/2008 18:59

WG I don't think we get offered sweeps round here til 40 weeks or a bit past it. I will probably go for one if I get that far, as I am sure I will want to try and get things moving. And at my 37 week appointment I was "not engaged". AT ALL. 38 week appointment tomorrow (nearly a week late!) so hopefully he will be a bit engaged now!
Trace love that - contractionmaster. Haha, will see if I can get an app for my iphone that does similar!

SummerLightning · 09/12/2008 19:01

So does a sweep hurt then? Or is it just uncomfortable?? I had a rather strange dream that the lady doctor from Green Wing was giving me one the other day, but it involved putting a tube up there and squirting up water really hard, and it really hurt. Very odd.

AllieBongo · 09/12/2008 19:03

Just to let you know, I had my baby last friday - a boy weighing 7lb 11oz. We finally came home today after a few days in special care. had an ok labour, baby decided to lie transverse at the last minute, but my wonderful consultant managed to turn him into my pelvis, rupture my membranes and whack a hideous drip into me to start the contractions and he arrived 5hrs later. was a bit traumatic, very painful and quick but hopefully things are on the mend. hope all the other ladies are doing well, will post more and when i'm a bit less exhausted!

kayzisexpecting · 09/12/2008 19:04

Congratulations Allie I'm glad you are at home and you are both well.
