Hi there. First chance to update. Had a baby girl, Polly. Born 13 August after a staggering 80 hours of labour, but only 11 minutes pushing, so most of that was first stage. Three days at home with frequent strong contractions proved pretty draining and seemed to promise an intervention-heavy birth, but we did it all natural, just paracetamol and codeine (!) and then gas and air at the end and Polly was born in the water. Phew! Just trying to cope with it all now and remembering to breathe properly and have a bit of a sit down every now and then!

I too had a water birth was wonderful after long 1st stage too but not as long as that.

Joseph has fed like a monster today - we've been trying to keep him awake for a little longer during daylight waking, so perhaps he's been using up an extra amount of calories. Finally got him latched on the right boob, thank god, which has relieved the pressure somewhat, but it's still rather sore. Hope I'm not developing a blocked duct.

Anyone here have any advice to stop the baby blues turning into PND? I have the former quite badly for the last three days or so, keep crying all the time and each evening I start getting really scared for no reason and have visions of running away etc. I have suffered from depression in the past and I know how it feels, this feels quite bad but I'm trying to tell myself its just a blitz of hormones and will pass Any advice?

Cheerfulvicky I am sorry I dont have any advice as such.
But I can say that I too have suffered from depression in the past and have been paranoid of getting pnd, I was equally worried during my 1st pregnancy.
I am more tearful this time and my moods are very up and down. Have swore and snapped at dh more times than I dare to recall this week.
He has been quite good, not responded to my outbursts he has just been nice, supportive and sort of pretending my outbursts didnt happen. whereas if it was a normal outburst (IYKWIM) then we would both have sounded off to each other.
Suggested we went for a walk the other day when I was crying as he thought the fresh air may do me good. It did.

As for you thinking its just a blitz of hormones, well yes you could be right, That is what I keep telling myself. DS is just 2 weeks old, and I keep telling myself it is different this time round because I also have an 18 mth old to care for too, and the feelings of guilt thrown in too, that I am not giving her the attention she needs, and then the guilt for leaving ds to cry while I try to see to her needs 1st.
It is early days be kind to yourself, but on the other hand do speak to a professional if you honestly think things are not right, they can help you properly, and you can start to fel better.
Sorry to ramble on, hope that all makes sense.

cheerfulvicky one step at a time, your health professionals will be aware of your history and advise you - the fact that you're aware is good, just keep talking.

pf aged 3 can be tricky, she's still a baby but desperately wants to exert her independance too - I agree with the advice already given but would also say stick to your routine so she doesn't think she can wrap you round her little finger!! can you try to involve her with Toby's routine at night so she is helping mummy put him to bed first (even if he's not) and then she knows she goes to bed next? let me know how you get on

I'm certainly no expert, I have Dylan balanced on my knee having been feeding since about 4pm, the girls were fed and left to own devices at tea time and the house looks like a bomb has hit it. DD1 will be asleep as shattered after busy day but DD2 upstairs doing her dinger and shouting the house down for me whilst kicking lumps out of her cot

I've had no tea, am bursting for a wee, want some juice and I'm tired. DH won't be home till gone 4am and has to be back in by 2pm so am feeling rather overwhelmed by it all and know I have to do it all again tomorrow

off to microwave some supernoodles one handed and try to calm the beast that is p*ssed off dd2

cheerfulvicky All i can say is keep an eye on it. I'm wondering somewhat similar about myself, though nothing like with my dd..... I plan to talk to my dr at my 6 week check this week.

Sorry to hear you're feeling down vicky. Can't offer any words of advice, but hope it's the hormones, they clear soon and you feel happier. Not the same thing, but my sister died of cot death and I really worried about being worried about that iyswim with both girls. It hasn't happened as badly as I thought/expected/feared, but can imagine how horrible the feeling of fear must be for you.

Re: managing adult relationships at times like this, DH and I bickered a fair bit last time and agreed beforehand this time that whenever we felt irritated with one another we'd take a step back and recognise what we're going through. So far, so good. We even managed a decent length conversation today about something that wasn't related to logistics of our lives/our children/work/what we've done today! Am sure we'll reach the end of the tolerant line at some point though, but good while it lasts!

Hi everyone. SOrry to have been awol for so long. Congrats to all who have had babies.

I have not read all the thread, but caught upa bit on the last lot. Lots of talk about slings - so I will confess to buying another one ! I mostly use zolowear ringslings during the day and my dh is using a karime wrap and a hotsling pouch. But I got tempted by a Close baby carrier after chatting with a woman in starbucks (as you do!) so we got one. I really like it and use it for longer walks/outings. Saul hates the pram so that gets no use at all. Thankfully it is not new but left from the other boys.

Sarahnh - about the crying while awake. I am not sure if you are breastfeeding, but assuming you are, have you considered a dairy intolerance? The reason I mention it is this is exactly what happened with Saul. He was so colicky and unhappy. He was either feeding, sleeping (and screaming himself off to sleep despite being in arms or sling) or crying. On the sugestion of a friend, I cut dairy from my diet and it made a huge difference. It took about a week, but he turned into a different baby. He is now happy and smiley when awake. I had a set back this week when he had a massive reaction to an egg sandwhich I ate, so egg is now off the menu too. Anyway, just thought I would mention it in case it helps.

Saul is now almost 7 weeks old and we are finally settling into ....well, not a routine as such...but just sort of settling into life. We co-sleep and that has been a godsend as he feeds 2 hourly round the clock. He will not sleep anywhere except in a sling during during the day. We have had the odd occasion when he has drifted off to sling in a swing chair, but its rare.

Hi all - relieved and happy to announce the birth of my beautiful son, Felix Joseph - born on 4 Sept after about 2 days of labour on and off. I did get my homebirth though it was touch and go at the end - he is absolutely gorgeous and perfect and we are so happy. Tackling the BF now.

Quick message as I have done a skim catch-up and noticed what Ilana wrote re. Saul and dairy - was wondering whether to post about this myself. Someone suggested cutting dairy out would help as my little one has v spotty skin and seems a little dry too. I've been eating shedloads of chocolate and milky cereal every morning - DS doesn't seem to suffer from crying fits but is quite windy as well as his skin being less than perfect oh dear first negative thing I have said about him! So v interested to read that you have cut dairy and noticed a difference, Ilana - do you think might be culprit for me too? Anyone else any thoughts?

Welcome Polly. And a vv pretty name. One of our favourite books is Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, Polly is a fab, feisty, intelligent little girl in it, would be a nice present when Polly is a wee bit older.

Welcome Felix, my first DS was nearly Felix! I'm sure you know it means Happy - so a lovely start for you to have such a positive name.

Okay today has be a doooozzzeeeyyyy. DH took us to lunch, where they lost our order but figured it out after we'd been there for an hour. DD1 could not find a good seat and was a holy terror most of the time. Then I knocked over my drink and it WENT EVERYWHERE (and then the waiter NEVER refilled it). Then Reese woke up for her feeding and when I took the lid off her bottle it FLEW off at lightening speed and hit the guy in the head at the next table. On a good note, we were given a meal for free because it got lost (or maybe because they just wanted us to LEAVE).

After we got home, I'd planned to go back out with DD1 for some one on one time with her. She ran into the house to potty as did I...somewhere in time between her going and me going she went back out to the truck and got herself STUCK upside down in the passanger window in a stupid attempt to re-enter the vehicle by herself through the half open window. As I RAN out the door in a panic having looked out to see her feet straight up in the air, I knocked Reese in the head with her timer causing her to begin to wail. DH was totally confused. He didn't hear me say DD1 is hanging upside in the truck. So once I was outside I had to SCREAM for him to come help me like a crazed lady because her leg was wedged so well between the open glass and door that I couldn't manage her release by myself. The whole time SHE was SCREAMING for us to STOP hurting her. We got her out with only bruises to her leg LUCKILY.

All of the above happened between 1PM and 4PM. Needless to say, I went back to bed for a nap and gave up on any attempt at having a normal non-stressful day!

Hello everyone. Sadly no action here yet. Still trying to keep my mind off things really. Went to maidstone for some retail therapy. Was nice, apart from having to dash for shelter every time it started to bucket down.

Yes AnnVan - still here. Aiming for tomorrow now as a funky birth date. I left you a post on the induction thread about my conversation with the MW yesterday - very interesting...

TS - your story had me in bits . I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but great story to retell!

Off to a 3,4 &6 yr old joint party at lunchtime - 80 people going (to a house...) 40 kids!!! Here's hoping it doesn't rain (ha). If that doesn't send me into labour nothing will.

ataraxis my god woman, you deserve a medal for even contemplating a 40-child party! Hope you survive intact and the baby decides to make an appearance soon.

Another day we're unlikely to get out of the house...sigh. it's still bucketing down here, worse than ever in fact. Then again it's probably for the best as yesterday a walk to the corner shop knackered me out for the rest of the day. Guess I still have some healing to do.

PIL are coming to visit today which is aces. FIL will take DP to the pub, which he fully deserves, and MIL is going to hang out with me and the wee man. Then we shall reconvene for takeaway food and conversation. I'm hoping I can get MIL to take the baby for half an hour so I can get some shut-eye, although last night was rather a dream with DS sleeping through from 3am to 7am DP and I even got a snuggly lie in together this morning, how delightful.

DP is now in the next room playing music to DS and singing to him I am on the sofa feeling sore and a bit rubbish...feels like all I do is feed, while DP does all the active parenting stuff plus all the cooking and looking after me. It makes me feel guilty. But feeding is so tiring! Especially when you've got a little gannet like mine.

Hope the day goes well, Cyteen. Remember to be kind to yourself-the feeding is a job in itself and really tires you out.

Delighted to hear from you too, Ilana. What a collection of slings! DD2 is very fond of the Close sling we have. I only wish I'd had it for DS 5 years ago as he would have loved it and the closeness would have saved us a lot of tears. Was it Dizzy asking about the lolling head business in the 'frog' position? I kind of pull out the 'under' strand so it goes round DD2's head, which works sometimes but at other times seems to drive her a bit mad. Fastening it a small bit lower can help too.

DH has just managed to scratch our new car (well, old but new to us) on his fourth trip out in it. I never shout at him, but let rip this time for a minute or two. Feeling a bit bad about it now ... Still, p'd off about the scratch just when I was getting v. fond of the thing. Aaah!

Sarahnh, I think Dizzy mentioned keeping Dylan upright after a feed and we've found that has eased a lot of the crying. I found the tip on a reflux advice page. I'll dig the ref out for later if I can find it again. There is a fab description of what happens to you when a baby cries in Anne Enright's Making Babies, which can be consoling to read again when they are this age. She's the only writer who really nails what it is like to have a small baby around I think.

Got to run as milk is needed again ...
