Congratulations Lcy! Sorry you had such a grim time. Hope you are now cosy at home with your beautiful baby.

Thank you all for your reassurances about Marianne's heart defect! You are very kind and sensible. I think we can be optimistic about the outcome - we will just have some scary times to get through first. I've just found the courage to google (though the cardiologist told us not to!) and apparently there's an olympic gold medallist who was born with the same thing which is encouraging! I am also reassured by the fact that she's being treated at Great Ormond St - at least they are specialists and do this kind of thing all the time.

What can I contribute to thank you all for your sympathy? Well, we are co-sleeping which is helping us to get at least a little sleep! DD sleeps on one side, then me then DH, as we've been told that mums, especially bf mums, are much much less likely to roll onto babies. I do seem to wake up when she does, even before she cries, which amazes me - I used to be a really heavy sleeper... We have a three-sided cot the other side of her so no danger of falling out, but she still ends up in the bed - by morning the cot is like a bedside table, full of my bf kit - water bottle, extra pillows, book, etc! My other bad mummy confession is that I sometimes let her sleep on her side as she so clearly prefers it to her back...

And massive sympathy to those in pain on sitting down/going to the loo - me too!

oopsacoconut · 08/09/2008 12:31

Hi All

Is it rude to say we have only just got up? DD slept well and after her 7.30 feed we both dozed off and hey presto it was 11am and time for more food, a change and gazing session (by me) then finally up and dressed!

DD has a very sticky eye and we are trying the breast mlk in the eye trick to avoid any antibiotics. I have a womb infection and am on antibiotics, after a fight with the doc I finally got prescribed BF friendly ones - she said 'just FF for a few days they you can start BF again' cue much disagreement and asking for second opinion - new doc gave me BF friendly ones.

Stitches healing nicly and can now sit down without wincing.

LCY sorry to hear your birth was not as planned, please do find someone to talk it through with.

Pertelote Sorry to hear about DD's heart condition - will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Cyteen Hope you are finding things more comfortable - I found the thicker the pad the more comfortable it was - I resorted to wearing two maternity pads when I knew I was going to be sitting for a long time.

Annvan Hope you okay, you still have time to go into labour naturally try and spend some time resting and relaxing - long warm baths, feet up with a good book, enjoy having both hands to yourself!

Sazzles - Hi

gigglegirl · 08/09/2008 12:36

i have acheived nothing today!!

All I really want to do is eat chocolate and lie around but I had better feed my kids!

Too much to do and no motivation today!

poppysocks · 08/09/2008 13:40

Congratulations Lcy on the birth of your DD and on getting through your ordeal. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Back issues here too. Trying to be sensible, but spending too much time just trying to get things done, rather than taking the time to do them properly iyswim. Hot water bottle in the small of my back when sitting down at home though is a must and really helps.

Dizzy - Gorgeous day! Bet it won't be tomorrow though... Looking forward to catching up.

Right - must be off now to wrap up b'day pressie, wrap up DD2, wrap up/re-dress DD1 and get to b'day party. See you later.

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 13:50

Hello everyone. I managed to get a little bit of sleep, but I@m back now.
Am considering whether or not to do some washing up. DP and I made a joint effort this weekend and managed to make the house look fit for human habitation. Really the mess was unbelievable. Also somehow a huge slug got in the house last night. I nearly stood on it [yuk]but I managed to get rid of it by letting is slime up onto a newspaper and then throwing the newspaper out!
Oops - that's pretty much what I'm doing. I've read Pride and Prejudice, now working thorugh Jane Eyre, and I am doing NOTHING that is supposed to kickstart labour. I don't want to get worked up about it again. No doubt my mw visit on thursday will set me of again though.
Now I'm hoping that LO either arrives before 13th or hangs on till after 17th, because there's three birthdays in that week in DPs family.
Lcy - at your story and the way your care was botched. Still more encouragment to reuse induction I think! but congrats on the arrival of your little lady!

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 13:51

Um that should read refuse induction. Damn F key!

VintageGardenia · 08/09/2008 14:28

Gosh Lcy that sounds as if it was really quite traumatic for you. I had a botched epidural first time round (well not exactly botched but difficulty getting it in leading to nicks in the wrong places) and while doctors poopooed the idea, I went to a cranio-sacral therapist (not till a good while later) and she was able to sort me out. I was in a bad way - I'd had terrible headaches, restricted movement in my neck, etc, and I'm fine now. I went to her last week for her to check me over after the most recent epidural and she said it was all fine, a good job this time round.

It's hard to get the time to address your own issues when the baby's there, but you might think about finding a cranio-sacral therapist near you. They are also very good on the emotional side of things, mine helped me a lot with that as well, so if you have any residual difficulty with how the birth went, might be useful there too.

Having said that, it might not be your thing at all! Plenty of my friends are when I mention cranio-sacral therapy. All I can say is it worked for me. Actually she also fixed what she said was compression in DS's skullbones from the birth, she said would avoid future problems.

It's brilliant that the feeding is going well now despite early barriers. Well done.

cyteen hope you are feeling brighter?

AnnVan I feel for you, I really do. I was induced first time round and can't say it was a walk in the park. If you can avoid it, do, unless obviously it's clearly necessary for the baby's wellbeing (in my case they said the amniotic fluid was at too low a level to be safe).

poppy I'm a hotwaterbottle addict too, currently can't sleep without one between my legs for my inner thigh muscles, whatever they're called.

oops hope the breastmilk works on the sticky eye, it's meant to be magic. Wish it would work on DS's skin, still spotty and dry. Anyone else's?

pf how's your DD today? Poor poppet.

Everyone else, hello, brain too sleepy and milky to be able to address everyone individually.

gigglegirl · 08/09/2008 15:20

ooops have you tried olive oil for the skin?

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 08/09/2008 16:14

Dizzy
I will find out the name of one my sister uses, not bad prices iirc.
Ebay is usually quite good, especially for body protectors.
I know what you mean about expense if they are not going to stick to it.
But I know if I dont ride in jodphurs (sometimes dont plan on riding but cant resist so jump on in my jeans) I get awful bruises on my legs where styrupp leathers rub.
But if only just started riding should be ok.

Will get back to you with that website.

Lcy · 08/09/2008 16:25

Hi

I have caught up a bit

pertelote - sorry to hear about your daughters heart condition. I will be thinking of you. I am also co-sleeping and DD prefers sleeping on her side too. It is how we slept in the hospital and i really love it x

VintageGardenia - luckily my head and neck are fine now. Once the fluid stopped leaking it all went away. I do know there is a cranio-sacral therapist near my pilates class so will go if any problems come back.

AnnVan - def would refuse an induction in the future. I felt so much pressure from the hospital after 10 days and held out for another 4, but when they are waving still birth facts and figures in your face it is so difficult. DD was not ready to come out, she was breech for until a few weeks before the birth and when she turned she never engaged or got her head in the right position. It was hideous because i had contractions every 2 minutes from the start because of the induction - it was never going to be a natural birth.

Thanks everyone else for the congratulations and encouragement to speak to someone. I have looked up the traumatic birth association and will contact someone on there. It isnt interfering with my bonding with DD - but i am having flashbacks and getting very tearful about it regularly with DH so i think i need to speak to some one.

I hope you are all having good days today x

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 08/09/2008 16:46

Bless you LCY must have been awful, it certainly sounds very frightening.
Do speak to someone though.
I hope it helps.

Re co-sleeping TBH it has always frightened me to death. Used to BF dd layed in bed during night and occasionally fell asleep, used to panic and put her in her crib.

However this time I have bed all to myself as Ds is so noisy dh is sleeping on sofa.
I have took bra off at night and just basically nursed and cuddled for last 4 nights and I have found it to be wonderful.
He too likes it on his side. I have mastered feeding from both breasts laying on oneside (as I am too lazy to turn on to otherside)
I do suggest a pillow between legs though as back can hurt when leaning over to offer other boob. iykwim

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 17:15

Lcy it really does sound awful. I hope you are feeling a bit better now. I have to say that everything I am hearing is making me think that I will refuse the induction this weekend. I don't think I will refuse indefinitely, because i would worry about the risks as well (I've known someone whose placenta failed and the baby died, althoug her placenta failed at about 36 weeks and baby died at 38 weeks, they reckon he'd been living off his body fat till then ) so actually goes to show...
Oops that was a bit of a nonsensical ramble.

ataraxis hasn't been on today... [hopefule emoticon]

cyteen · 08/09/2008 18:44

Lcy - congrats on the birth of your DD, if i haven't already said it, and I second what everyone else says about talking it through with someone. I know a few people who have found the Birth Trauma Association very helpful, also your PCT might offer a 'birth reflections' service where you talk through your delivery with a midwife - might be useful when you feel ready. Just keep talking, especially to DH - I've found myself going over and over my own (positive) experience with my partner, just because it is such a huge life-changing event, and it's been fascinating how his perspective has added to my own. Take care and be kind to yourself, and enjoy your lovely daughter xx

no1 lol at you not turning over to feed from both sides My kind of girl.

AnnVan at huge slug. I hate them, they make my skin crawl. Eurgh Impressed that you dealt with it yourself, I can't even do that

Thanks to everyone for the supportive messages, am pleased to say am feeling much brighter today. DP took Joe for his 24 hr check this morning, all good Then - drumroll please - we went into town for our first trip out! and it was lovely. only went to the new john lewis to get some bits, but it was so great to take joseph out in the pram for the first time, to be among people again and do normal stuff again. joe slept through the whole thing, which probably means we're in for a wakey night tonight...oh well

feeding has been better today as well. i've made an effort to do some of the stuff suggested by nice MNers and have been so much more comfortable. also think i've turned a bit of a corner re. healing, which is welcome! even had a nap altho it was interrupted by doctor ringing up to tell me i've got thrush + need yet more bloody canesten.

Lcy · 08/09/2008 18:48

Sorry AnnVan - i didnt realise you had an induction looming! If i was to go over due again i would ask for monitoring and a scan - i think if i had been scanned they would of seen her difficult position and i could of made an informed choice whether to give labour a try or have a c-section. I don't know if they would offer that though. On a positive note if you do a search there are lots of positive induction stories on here. You have a while before the weekend and the baby may come naturally yet. Good luck.

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 18:57

Cyteen - I also hate slugs. I HAD to deal with it as DP was asleep and it was sliming its way into my kitchen. I didn't want to go near it but I knew if I didn't do something it would be hiding in there somewhere waiting to ambush me. So that's why I had to bite the bullet to get it out of the house!

Lcy no worries, the mw seems to be ok with the idea of monitoring though so if nothing happens this week, I might try and put it off for another week.

Totally unrelated rant coming up: I love MN for the ante-natal thread etc - you lot are lovely. But I have to hate how many people there are on other threads who are either a)spoiling for a fight or b) totally oversensitive. You say something totally innocent and some cow jumps on you for it. I think from now on I will stick to the ante-natal thread with you lovely August ladies, and my nappy chat thread. If you venture out of these topics you have to go prepared with flak jacket, helmet, kevlar etc to avoid the shrapnel!

cyteen · 08/09/2008 19:00

hehe, arguing on the internet...it's the same all over. I just don't get involved, it's not worth the stress. this cartoon pretty much sums up my feelings about it

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 19:10

cyteen - lol. So true. I avoid the arguments like the plague. It's just a pain when you say something supposed to be helpful/supportive etc and some snotty cow decides that you're somehow being insulting or something. Normally I just walk away, but this time I was a little too hormonal and got a bit snotty back!

Seriously no Ataraxis today - ooh exciting, I am holding thumbs/ keeping everything imaginable crossed that something is happening!

Um... who is going to start a new thread. I would but I don't have TS's list expertise.

cyteen · 08/09/2008 19:11

I was just going to ask that...been trying to think of a title but brain too full of milk. Ladies, your thread title suggestions please before this one runs out of room!

Buckets · 08/09/2008 19:15

Lcy congrats and sorry to hear about yet another birth trauma (had one myself first time round.) Have a look at this if you get the time, you're certainly not alone. It's called Post Natal Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - print out a leaflet and give to your GP at your 6wk checkup in case they haven't heard of it. Good luck, hope you can get over it in time.

Good Sazzles - I would feel so left out If I didn't get myself and little late one updated on stats list just because it obviously feels happy where it is.

God, how big is it going to be when it comes out? MW was saying two weeks ago that it felt like a 'fair sized baby' eeek. None of the newborn stuff will fit. At least my cloth nappies will though!!

I'm not having any luck thinking of a thread title though, sorry!

miamla · 08/09/2008 19:40
