TS - how on earth do you get the head lined up and pressing on the cervix?!

ataraxis · 05/09/2008 21:17

Just in general - Had a look up of the average 266 days from conception to birth - apparently that was devised 150 years ago! Also, problem now (at least in the UK) is that if they only let you go to 42 weeks before intervention (induction etc) that will automatically skew any results in favour of that already stated.
I'm no medical expert, but surely if the placenta started to degrade, and the baby was not getting enough food etc, then nature would dictate that the baby would make a real effort to come out?
Oh hell, I am seriously over thinking this whole thing now...

TwilightSurfer · 05/09/2008 22:22

Ataraxis....seriously 266days is average. WOW! Then both mine being 268 means I'm totally NORMAL!!! As for the head lining up, I haven't a clue but supposedly there are MWs and other folk who work with pregnant women to get things LINED UP for a more POSITIVE BIRTH EXPERIENCE.

This is an article/page I wish I had read BEFORE going into labour as it might have given me the STRENGTH to QUESTION my doctor when he said TIME FOR A CSECTION. For the record I repeatedly asked about fetal positioning all throughout my last trimester....my doc said all would happen naturally. NATURALLY MY ASS!!! Reese was cock-eyed and therefor STUCK thus my CS.

Hi all, it's so lovely to hear the baby news for Petitfilou, Oops, Cyteen and co. I've just read 30 pages of the thread in one go, so apologies for not welcoming every new arrival more personally.

DS started school on Monday, so with that, a bout of refluxy-type behaviour from DD2 (a flashback to months of that with ds), the need to find and buy a car (no sexual favours involved dizzy , and a new boiler too there has been no thread time to be had.

DS thinks school is just fab which is great- He looks shockingly grown-up in his uniform and dd and I are missing him a lot. On the positive side, it does feel as if we've finally started 'the new normality' if that makes sense.

Aaah, there was so much I had planned to write as I read through and my one-handed typing and sleep-starved brain are hampering me. All of this is so much better than being on the pre-birth side of things though so every best wish to ataraxis and annvan.

Hopefully I can keep up again from now on.
VG -- can't sign off without mentioning how heartbreakingly gorgeous E is in his pic. He accounted for one of the many teary-eyed moments of this catch-up session.

Goodnight all.

cyteen · 05/09/2008 22:57

Great to hear from you Sibh

Typing one-handed as other arm full of baby...a couple of questions:

is it normal for a 1 week old to sleep for two hours, wake up crying with dirty nappy, be changed, be fed, go back to sleep again for two hours, repeat? Cos this is what DS is doing. I'm guessing yes it is, but wanted to be sure.

how do you manage the stress on your partnership? things are cool but obviously sleep deprivation etc. are taking their toll. DP is feeling a bit stir crazy I think, as am I. Any tips you've found invaluable for surviving the first year as a family? forewarmed is forearmed after all

TwilightSurfer · 05/09/2008 23:03

Cyteen, tis perfectly normal & won't change for a while!!!!

51 births! we're getting there ladies

exhausted. am sitting on sofa being slept on by grizzly windy baby. will instruct DP to make me sleep b/w feeds later today.

PetitFilou1 · 06/09/2008 07:58

dizzy and any of the others of you with three or an older sibling who is acting up HEEEEELLLLPP

dd is causing big problems at night - she got up FOUR times last night. She wants dh to sleep next to her on the floor and if he gets up and comes back to bed then she comes in to find him. We are both utterly exhausted - Toby is being fine re sleeping (except not feeding enough but that is another story) - but even so with his ordinary night feeds I need some more sleep. Dh is at the end of his rope though so is now the one who is asleep. Anyone got any ideas of how to cope with her???? I will love you forever if anything works. ANYTHING.

sarahnh · 06/09/2008 08:31

no advice pf.. my dd1 has been playing up too, dh was away on wed night and i had both dds in bed with me all night with dd1 demanding cuddles everytime i fed dd2 so massive hugs going your way...

now i have a question.. does anyone else baby cry when they are awake.. what i mean is Tess when she is awake just seems to cry and cry.. we don't seem to get any play time or quieltly looking around the room time.. she either awake crying, feeding, pooing or asleep... she was awake from 1.20am til 4am this morning and i don't know why.. have been giving her infacol to help with her wind... but ANY ADVICE, TIPS would be so helpful as i feel like i am at the end of my tether

dizzydixies · 06/09/2008 08:44

petit what age is she? is she old enough to be made to feel more self important or are we talking sleep training?

have to nip out to dancing, then have visitors then dd1 has gymnastics too but I will pop back on later to try to help

PetitFilou1 · 06/09/2008 09:00

dizzy She's 3 (just - the day before Toby was born!) We are not talking sleep training as normally she's pretty good (although had done this before he was born too)

Sarah I can't advise on the wakefulness at night as mine don't seem to do that (the babies at least) but in the day I would try a sling even when you are in the house. I also got one of those really ugly electronic fisher price swings to use when dd was little (plays music, has a mobile etc) and that helped. Also getting them outside and walking the pram generally gets them off to sleep eventually.

Also in the night, I assume you aren't changing nappies unless she's done a pooh?

sarahnh · 06/09/2008 09:06

PF I also have one of those swings and a bouncy chair and she hates all of them.. she likes to be held all the time... def only change her nappy at night when she has done a poo but as she seem to poo regularly at night time it can become a nightmare...

will try the sling around the house tho that might settle her a little bit... i guess i'm just feeling a bit down due to lack of sleep and wishing that she seemed a bit happier!

TwilightSurfer · 06/09/2008 09:51

PF, my DD1 has given us a run for our money since bringing home Reese. My trick...don't scold unless ABSOLUELY necessary, allow her to sleep on the floor in our room, allow her to sleep in our guestroom (if that's what she asks for), give her loads of hugs while Reese is sleeping, tell her how wonderful she is, give her little things she can "help" with where Reese is concerned, make DH her primary playmate for an hour or so in the afternoon while my hands are full with Reese, and basically be as flexible as possible without being a total wet noodle. I'm also a talker-outer so I attempt to EXPLAIN things, even if it's over her head, so she at least maybe begin to grasp some little bit of understanding...like you can't sleep "with" me because the baby will cry & keep you awake, there's not enough room in the bed, daddy might roll on top of you, or you're not wearing a pull-up and you KNOW mommy doesn't allow tinkling in her bed. DD1 has done much better this week (week 3) and I'm sure preschool (3 hours every day) has had some positive impact too because she finally has her "own" thing going on.

Sarah, DD1 was like that. I remember feeling helpless. I think I carried her ALL DAY LONG. It might have been better if I'd had the Moby but I didn't. Stroller time outside worked some and so did car rides. I wish I gad some better advice for you but I think some babies are just more difficult than others.

Just popping in v quickly - hope everyone is well, not time to read right now. Just wanted to say hi to AnnVan and make sure you are doing ok this morning?
pf - aw gawd, that doesn't sound good... last thing you need is another one of the DCs stopping sleep. Hope it settles down quickly.
Will check in later x

miamla · 06/09/2008 10:33

ooh i've got cotton wool brain today, i can remember the questions but not who asked them..
re: DH/DP relationship. We found that we had to make a special effort for the two of us to spend some time together. I was treating the times when DS was asleep for me to rest/sleep but soon realised that I wasn't taking into account spending some time just with DP without DS. Things are all alot better now. The other thing we're making a conscious effort about is having some weekend time with no visitors. Otherwise, DP was having to share DS all weekend and that didnt seem very fair in my book.

re: crying babies. DS used to be like that, he was only awake and content when he had a nipple in his mouth. I spoke to the mw about it and she suggested winding him when he was crying (even if it was ages after a feed). This seemed to really work for us so its worth a go

DS and DP were in the other room and realised they were both v quiet. Just been in and DS fast asleep on the chest of a sleeping DP. DS now with me and grumbling, think he preferred it on his daddy's chest!

oh my goodness, i'm sitting here doing a great job impersonating a milk fountain! i'm dripping from both sides. i'll have to be careful to not electrocute myself with the laptop charger! Sorry, perhaps it was TMI for you all to know i'm topless at the moment!

so have we all got nice weekends planned? anyone planning on having a baby?!! ours is going to be a quiet one. i've got a couple of cousins and my mum visiting this afternoon but apart from that the time is our own

hello to all, hope your LOs are behaving beautifully. for ataraxis and annvan

Might i suggest for the unsettled baby - swaddling? before you feed or wind so that you can do of these and cuddle baby and then lie baby down and baby believes it is still being cuddled? can also put into bouncy chair and swing swaddled and set the swing on low motion cheating a little i know but it can buy you precious time to chill/eat/cuddle older DC's or DH/DP.

CaptainCaveman · 06/09/2008 13:57

Afternoon - am so crap at catching up so I won't pretend I have

Hoping you are all well and dandy?

Ds2 is asleep, ds1 is STILL watching tv . Dh has buggered off into town with one of his oldest friends (to be fair he doesn't see this friend very often due to distance and parenthood). Leaving me home alone with both ds's. Ho hum.

I bought myself a 'closer' sling yesterday. The verdict is that ds2 and I LOVE IT.

sazz I finally got some vouchers from work so I used these to buy the sling.

The weather is shite eh?

miamla thanks for the tips, it's all useful. I think DP just worries about getting stressed and being stressed around the baby...interestingly we both find that Joseph's crying doesn't stress us out if he's with us, but is really stressful and upsetting if he's in the other person's care. DP gets a bit upset when Joseph won't latch on or is fussing at the breast, for example.

It's all early days yet though and we're still working it out Keeping up communication is key, I believe! Anyway, DS is spark out in his bouncy chair at present, looking like a little gnome, so DP and I will hopefully get to enjoy some nice adults-only lunch before the milk demands recommence.

Know what you mean about the overflow - every time I feed DS his clothes get soaked by the other nipple He is doing so well with the feeding, I feel very fortunate. Only issue at present is he finds it harder to latch onto the right boob and gets upset easier. The rugby ball hold works better there but sometimes he just won't go...I think it's a bit big for his wee mouth

Hi

Just update. Baby boy, Elliot, born 1st September 4:45pm 8lb 15oz.
Went into labour 5pm day earlier.
All done on gas and air, not bad at all. Much better than previous when taking pethadine.
I think the key was waters not broke until 7cm dilated. Contractions obviously painful but not unbearable. After waters broke then yes, pain but baby arrived in 45 mins.
Unfortunately, the placenta didnt come out.
2 midwives and a consultant couldnt remove it (consultant surgeon was yanking the cord like a bell rope and I had to physically push him away!!!!) Ended up in theatre having epidural to remove placenta manually.
Really glad I only had gas and air as

  1. Only had 2 stitches as I listened more to midwife saying when to push and not to push
  2. I was coherent enough to stop the consultant pulling my insides out.

All the best 2 all mums, I must be one of the last.

Well done "waytoomuchchocolate" and congratulations!

Re. dp / dc thing I have been wondering about this. Things are ok (ish) but lack of sleep makes everyone less tolerant and more needy and crosser when their needs are not immediately recognised and catered for! I am talking about myself, of course. I am a bit concerned about the adult relationship being neglected but to be honest at the moment I am just letting it go I know this is wrong, I am hoping we have enough of a bolster to get by for a few months. Perhaps this is unwise.

dizzy lol re. me being the philosphical one. Makes me think of us being like the Spice Girls, each having a "brand" - miamla the artsy crafty one, CC the sporty type, etc etc. But seriously, re. the "knowing", I had that moment, but in reverse - as if my little boy looked at me and thought to me, "ok, this is us, we will be ok". As if it was the point at which he decided he would trust me. Am I odd? WIth elder DS I remember distinctly when he was a few weeks old thinking he could SEE things (spooky things), shades, etc, over my shoulder. I thought that for a good few weeks.

Oh am being hustled out of the door, back soon.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 06/09/2008 16:11

Congratulations Goodie2shoes Lovely name.
at consultant pulling/tugging like that.

Annvan hope you are ok.

PF My dd has been waking up nearly every night for a beaker of milk, will settle back down straight away. Has been doing this on and off before baby arrived.
However she has started to want a long cuddle after the milk, before going into her cot, and she will dictate when she is ready to go in the cot
Normally would not let an 18 mth old dictate to me but it is all new to her too, so just going with the flow at the moment.
Dh got up with her last night and apparently she sat on hos knee for about an hour and then got up and walked over to her cot to be put down.

Hopefully this is progress for eventually letting dh put her to bed.
Cant remember who said before that they think there dh does not have the patience to sit with dc for a while in dark, was it you Sazzles
I think this is the case with my dh.
I love it because she never wants a cuddle any other time.

good luck Pf hope things settle down with dd.
