OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Sibh · 30/07/2008 11:31

gigglegirl -- what a vile woman! What is it with people who believe that small children shouldn't explore waiting rooms?

I have just survived an impromptu C-section conducted by DD, aged 2, armed with a bob the builder chainsaw and a spanner: 'Me mend your tummy and get smidgey out.'

I saw that thread too AnnVan--truly shocking and a reminder not to trawl 'active threads' in the middle of the night!

gigglegirl · 30/07/2008 11:32

AnnVan I was just like that lady - ended up having to use nipple sheilds for three months as DD couldn't latch on. Was on the hospital pump just to get something to feed her.

and my MIL tried to give my daughter ice cream when she was three weeks old and houmous when she was 6 weeks old - she is a NIGHTMARE!

Briwish · 30/07/2008 11:45

Dear All

Know I am v.late to join this thread and am totally clueless as to how to add myself to list, but am Due 19 Aug with DD2 we think. (legs crossed at scan!)

Quick question - she has definitely dropped over night although I am still having lots of movement - any chance that labour may start soon or do you think I am wishful thinking and still may have weeks to go? I have seen stories where they say subsequent babies often engage just before/during labour.

Buckets · 30/07/2008 11:57

Miamla Congrats, how exciting! Are you planning on coming home today once he's fed or staying another night?

TS Don't worry about feeding, I'm seriously only trying it this time because I'll have 3 kids and neither me or DH can face the idea of bottles and sterilisers again. Also I used to make up water bottles and add powder when needed, served at room temp, easypeasy. But since last baby there's a guideline against this - I just can't be arsed with chilling and heating etc.

GG wow, what well-behaved kids! Have promised mine lunch at local greasy spoon then off for final MW checkup, hope they're as good as yours.

ataraxis · 30/07/2008 12:10

Hi Briwish, welcome on board.

I don't think there is any definite rule of engagement. I am due 28/8 and head was engaged from last week onwards... nothing yet (although fingers crossed for 1 week and 1 day...), so think it could go either way.

sarahnh · 30/07/2008 12:18

ek buckets.. what guideline on sterlising??? that exactly what i used to do with dd and that was nearly 3 years ago.. what has changed???

Briwish · 30/07/2008 12:20

Okay - understand now!

ataraxis · 30/07/2008 12:21

I would also like to make a point about bf - DS1 fed beautifully for the first 3 weeks, then just stopped. No amount of bf support or me trying helped him get back on to it. Mixed fed from there on in, totally beating myself up about it... I finally (at around 4 months) reconciled myself with the fact that the most important thing was that he was getting fed.

DS2 for some reason did pretty much the same thing, except bf for a couple of weeks longer. I managed to prevent the emotional self abuse but still felt like I was letting him down somehow.

It's great when people can bf successfully, and when people get through difficulties, but please bear in mind that it isn't always the case and that if it doesn't happen, for whatever reason, that doesn't make people less of a mother. Just to clarify - i am not suggesting that anyone has implied this, but that is what I felt about myself, particularly when everyone else was successful at it.

I would like to bf LO, but bearing in mind past experience, and 2 other DCs, I have some trepidation over it and have to remind myself that I have two lovely (mostly), healthy boys and that is what ultimately counts.

Emotional outburst over...

BabiesEverywhere · 30/07/2008 12:23

For all our August mums there is a board for information and help on both formula and breastfeeding here

For breastfeeding mums there is an excellent blog by another mumsnetter HunkerMunker with all the four charity advice lines on the right hand side www.howbreastfeedingworks.com

HTH

I am still nursing my 23 month old daughter, so it looks like we will be tandem nursing when the new baby arrives. It will be interesting to see if establishing breastfeeding with a second baby will be easier than my first.

cyteen · 30/07/2008 12:24

WOW huge congratulations miamla What a very timely young man Theo is, to arrive so neatly by his due date Sounds like a great experience, and also may I say well done for posting so promptly on MN.

LOL at Sibh's amateur surgeon DD.

AnnVan I saw that thread as well and was properly shocked...like you I feel very lucky indeed to have such wonderfully supportive and sane ILs.

CC I too have been experiencing the Allied Carpets (massive clearout) effect lately After all those months of constipation, though, I'm not complaining!

Have been to see midwife this morning after a month of not having seen her. Good news is that baby has turned and is head down, although is back to back which isn't really a surprise considering how slumped I am most of the time. Also I have got a doctor's appt including swab for Group B Strep on Friday morning, as my fanjo soreness still hasn't gone away, so despite the unglamour of that I'm glad it's being looked into.

We discussed wanting a home birth and it was a bit of a mixed experience really. She was quite doomy and discouraging in her outlook, which I had anticipated as I know from previous conversations that she doesn't recommend HBs with first babies, but I tried to put aside any emotional clashes and listen to the valid points she was making. These included the fact that apparently there are loads of women due at the same time as me, plus the service is stretched to the max with staff sickness and holiday etc., so if there were no mws available we would have to go straight to hospital - obviously this is something I wouldn't know but she would, so worth bearing in mind.

I'm seeing her again next week to confirm what we want to do, and tbh we will probably end up going for the birth centre - vacillation, I know, but there is a lot to think about and it's good to get all the different points of view before making a truly informed decision.

So all in all, pretty good. I'm off to the cinema this afternoon to watch The Dark Knight with a friend - should be lovely if I can get there without melting!

BabiesEverywhere · 30/07/2008 12:28

Re. Formula guidelines.

As formula is not sterile it is important that the water used to make up formula is at least 70c and used straight away so the powder does not have chance to develop any bacterial growth.

Here are the latest guidelines in an NHS PDF leaflet format

sarahnh · 30/07/2008 12:30

thank you babieseverywhere xx

ataraxis · 30/07/2008 12:37

cyteen, I had DS1 in a birth centre & DS2 at home. Had great experiences with both, home was better (but probably because a) I knew what to expect and b) DS2 was quicker!).

Also, had a water birth with DS1 and couldn't be doing with the hassle of sorting a pool out at home. The MW I had at the time got me into the pool too early, which slowed everything up and pretty much stopped contractions for around 7 hours... very boring and we nearly went home. But generally the support there was lovely and for a first child was my ideal choice.

ataraxis · 30/07/2008 12:41

Interesting point babieseverywhere - I used to put (can't remember exact proportions), bottles with boiled water in the fridge, and top up with boiling water at time of feed (thereby saving screaming time when DC was hungry). Looks like that might not be the best idea...

BabiesEverywhere · 30/07/2008 13:13

ataraxis, What about having a few ready made liquid formula cartons in, surely they must be quicker to heat up (guessing as I haven't used formula myself) and they are recommended for newborns.

ataraxis · 30/07/2008 13:55

babieseverywhere - hopefully the bf will go perfectly this time so it won't be an issue - she is a girl, so bound (?) to be much more amenable .

VintageGardenia · 30/07/2008 14:36

Hi, well I can't be induced tomorrow as the baby's head is still too high HOORAY! I was NOT looking forward to it. I followed the doc's appt with some lovely reflexology - staying away from uterus as still not actually at due date - and now back home with DS and dogs feeling lighthearted.

I've more reflex on Sunday, and I don't mind if something is triggered then, otherwise back with doc on Wed.

So ChaCha you can have 31st July all to yourself, and a very nice birthday I hope it proves. How are you feeling today? Keyed up or chilled?

ataraxis your DS showing good sense in leaving MN for RL - a pity more of us haven't his sense of proportion! Re. the bf I agree about guilt-loading etc, wrong wrong wrong and not a bit constructive. Plus they always say anything you can give - six days, four weeks, whatever - is beneficial to the baby. And if you change to formula, your child still grows and develops and is loved and happy and you are still a good mother. Having said that, I am surprised miamla's hospital is looking to give a bottle already, rather than encouraging the bf.

miamla hope Theodore and you are having a lovely day, I expect/hope he will feed this afternoon, but as sazzles said skin-to-skin and opportunities. Hugs to you both! Well a very gentle one to Theodore.

cyteen when do you have to make your final decision? Are you feeling ok?

at the cream thread, I saw that! and at ice cream and houmus at 6 weeks! Are people insane? Having said that, my sister did give my DS a little finger dipped in champagne when he was about 2 months. I think if it had been anyone else I would have turned into the Incredible Hulk on the spot, somehow as it was her I was ok!

Sibh my DP would leave me in a flash for oops or dizzy and their baking skills, or for miamla and her diy and decorating. Man is a fickle beastie!

oopsacoconut · 30/07/2008 14:45

Afternoon all - beware rant warning

Had a very quiet morning so far - DH was touching up the paint in bubs room - I asked him to check it was the right colour on a small spot on the wall - did he listen??? NO I'm only a hormonal fussy woman. He sanded and touched up all the walls and we headed off for a stomp down the canal path - stopped for tea and snack. Came home and I though i'llcheck on the paint, it is SO not the same colour........ I decided to tell DH before it was too late (we are going out to dinner and DH back to work tomorrow)and now it is ALL my fault - i should have checked the paint before he used it - why did I not test it first. Please explain how this is my fault???

Now hiding in sunroom having stripped the sofa covers off and put them in the washing machine.

TwilightSurfer · 30/07/2008 14:58

Morning!
I'm just logging in. Will read and update stats. Give me a few minutes.

Then I'll share a HUGE RANT!!!!

TwilightSurfer · 30/07/2008 15:01

CONGRATULATIONS! MIAMLA on a JOB WELL DONE!!!! Welcome to the world Theodore!!!

AnnVan · 30/07/2008 15:02

sibh - you are so right, I was trawling active threads at 2 am It is quite depressing, cos it's almost always the people on who can't sleep cos of cheating husbands etc who are online. Not encouraging.

Still that cream thread made me incredibly thankful to have a nice non-interering MIL, who also happens to have a toddler herself, so is not still living in the dark ages when it ocmes to kids.

To an extent my mum is, she backs the idea of a 14 hour time limit on labour because she says 'th baby goes into distress' hello, I don't think babies have little ticking timers on them, and why do midwives have monitors then?? grrr

Dizzy I'm glad you getting some rest today.

Thanks for all the positive notes on the BF front. I've been thinking long and hard about it and just finally came to a firm decision....which feels good.

Sarah, sorry you have a cold.

Captain, glad to hear your bowels are clear. My plumbing been working quite quickly these days as well. Lovely isn't it.

Sibh, with you on the hormonal wreck front....will share my rant will all later.

YEAH VG!!

Anyone heard from BigBoy???

God that bottlefeeding leaflet is even more depressing than I thought it would be! What a nightmare doing all that in the middle of the night with a screaming baby. But at least you can mix the water and formula if the water is kept warm in a thermos bag or something. Half an hour to cool was always way too hot to drink and cooling it under the cold tap takes ages and makes you feel guilty about all the water going down the plughole!

Glad to say my kids were as good as Gigglegirl's at the MW this avo. DS even tried to chat at her (about a lollipop he had last week) and hopped on a stool to help her palpate my tummy (still only 3/5 engaged). Having been to so many appts lately for him and me, he seems to have got quite comfortable around medical folk, even if he thinks they are all the same person.

congratulations miamla, wonderful news, at last you're able to cuddle your baby!

1 day over now, should be really patient, but ds was 3 weeks early so just feel really ready to have my baby very soon and enjoy cuddling him/her and enjoy not being pregnant anymore!!!

has anyone got any advice for the afterpains, apparantly worse with your 2nd as if you haven't been through enough!!
