Just curious - has anyone here been tested for Group B Strep? I was telling my friend yesterday about my painful sex issue and she said a friend of hers had something very similar which turned out to be the result of GBS, so I'm thinking that when I see the midwife next week I'll ask her to investigate further.

murf · 22/07/2008 10:57

Hi I am due 13 August, expecting a baby girl. First baby! Bag all packed.

I have been warned that my hospital - Queen Charlottes has no snacks / food - so any recommendations for good snacks to take with me to sustain hubby and I during labour??

PetitFilou1 · 22/07/2008 11:00

Hello murf
Welcome to this (busy) thread. Snacks during labour lol. I don't think you'll find you want much! And definitely don't eat a lot just beforehand. I drank a carton of orange juice and ate a cereal bar with first labour and the whole lot came back up (partly over dh's shoes).
I did eat a whole bag of truffles in one go afterwards though!

ataraxis · 22/07/2008 11:00

Morning all,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY buckets!!! pf would suggest you go with whatever you think will work best for both DD and you. Will be an important time to make her feel special so in a way would be good after, but as you don't know a definite date, don't think you can base a decision on dates...(really helpful, I know). Sorry DH is being mean - Men eh, it is amazing how quickly they feel left out/rejected - can you do something nice one evening just the two of you? It's only going to get more hectic as you well know...

dizzy, hope you and your mum are doing ok this morning.

Ilana - wow! thinking of you.

albs - does threading last longer than plucking? I am with sazzles on the eyebrow front - keep it as simple as possible! I also know people who have their underarms waxed... surely that means you have to grow it for an unacceptably long time before you can have clean underarms again? So for me it is:

Legs/bikini - waxing
Eyebrows - plucking
Underarms - shaving

Too much information?

cyteen · 22/07/2008 11:00

Hi murf, and welcome Congrats on your imminent first baby, I'm a first timer too - isn't it scary exciting?

Snackwise, I suppose we should be taking things that will provide sustaining energy (flapjacks and fruit and all that), but it's hard to know what if anything you might want/be able to face in that situation. I did hear someone recommend those isotonic sports drinks as a good way of keeping well hydrated.

ataraxis · 22/07/2008 11:02

ooh, and I had the realest(?) dream last night that I had the baby. So real that I am still a bit freaked that there is no baby here...

ataraxis · 22/07/2008 11:02

Hi murf - welcome!

cyteen · 22/07/2008 11:08

LOL at all the baby dreams - I've just been having random saucy dreams about middle aged men Kurt Russell the other night, and Dr House before him...oh dear.

stillhere · 22/07/2008 11:10

Welcome murf! With my first baby, I packed a load of stuff to get me through labour - snacks, drinks, sudoku books - what was I thinking of ?! And all I ended up doing was necking back bottles of orange Lucozade sport then throwing it back up later. So whatever you choose be prepared to fall out of love with it for a long while afterwards...

Forgot to say happy birthday Buckets! Hope you're getting some sunshine and have some cake for me.

bealcain · 22/07/2008 11:13

hello all,

sorry no posts, for almost a week have been in hospital with no internet

will be induced at weekend.

can't believe we have our first August baby, does anyone know if Ilana's ok?

Happy birthday buckets

stillhere · 22/07/2008 11:18

Hi bealcain - lovely to hear from you! Been wondering how you're doing. Good luck for the weekend - exciting!

And meant to say to cyteen that my GBS testing stuff arrived this morning - I'm just coming up to 36 weeks and the GBSS people recommend 35 - 37 weeks and an ECM test if that's possible. Round here you can get this discounted via a local path lab at the hospital, which saves a bit (£20 rather than £30 I think). So at some point today I'm going to be dropping a rather delightful set of swabs off at the doctors. Mmm. Hope everyone's had their breakfast!

morning all
re the group b stret
website here for more info... www.gbss.org.uk/

nhs doesnt routinely test but they will if you ask for it. in my opinion i have no idea why everyone doesn't get tested but hey, just my opinion. i got mine done last week (very quick low vaginal swab), havent had results yet so need to track those down this week

happy birthday buckets

i feel like going back to bed but really want to get some more painting done, no energy at all today, hey ho

ataraxis · 22/07/2008 11:31

Hi bealcain, good to hear from you. As you can see, you have had us all guessing... glad you are ok.

cyteen - is this a normal fantasy of yours...?

stillhere - cloudy here too (warm though) - radio said it was sunny here - they are lying.

pregnancy1 · 22/07/2008 11:34

Okay, silly Q - what's strep B? Can I just go to my doctors and ask to be tested?

PetitFilou1 · 22/07/2008 11:45

pg1 not silly Q - try this link, will tell you all you need to know. Testing is not routinely provided on the NHS. I've never had it done but midwives are starting to encourage you to get it done privately (at least round here).

www.gbss.org.uk/?gclid=CIPds-mn05QCFQpPQgod2gY6lA

cyteen · 22/07/2008 11:50

ataraxis LOL no, not Kurt Russell anyway - the very idea! I will admit to a soft spot for Dr House, but no idea where KR came from. If my brain's that sex-starved, the least it could do is serve me up Johnny Depp or similar.

Thanks for the info on GBS, I will investigate

Need to get outside with my book, the weather is scorching here today!

AnnVan · 22/07/2008 12:19

Buckets - Happy Birthday!! Mmmm lemon drizzle, my favourite

VG you posted about 10 minutes after I went to bed at 5.15this am. Am knackered but made sure to get up. I'm having lovely massage today No way I'm missing that!

The weather looks quite sunny here, but I need a nice cup of fresh coffee first.

murf - hello, another first timer here. I'm 34 weeks, and haven't yet packed my bag. I have no idea about snacks. DP's more likely to be able to eat them than we will be, so I think I'll pack stuff he'll want.

Bealcain - Welcome back, have been wandering how you were getting on, good luck for the weekend! This isit now ladies, I can sit back and wathc you all pop.

MrsMagooo · 22/07/2008 12:25

Sazzles sorry you had a crap night sleep hun - have your propped your eyes open with matchsticks??

PF Glad you had a lovely MW appt fingers crossed you get her for your HB!!

Buckets HaPpY bIrThDaY!!!! Oooooo yummy lemon cake thank you muchly did you get anything nice pressie wise?? Any plans for this afternoon/evening??

Dizzy thinking of you and your mum {{{{hugs}}}}

Murf Welcome I am a late newbie too

Miamla I'm with you on the GBS - no idea why everyone doesn't get tested for it routinely!!

Me rant coming....well I seriously thought I was going to go into labour yesterday/small hours of this morning but nope

Spent all days yesterday with strong back ache, wanting to clean things & get tidy, niggles on & off, very strong BHs, feeling generally 'off', went to loo a fair few times, went to bed about 11pm but kept needing loo then got very bad stomach ache!

Dozed off & woke again about 3am again very strong stomach ache, needing the loo, pains coming & going, stomach going rock hard, back ache - so got up came downstairs pottered & about haf an hour later it all buggering stopped!!

Back ache & stomach ache on & off at the mo but all very mild - feeling incredibly sick though just for added enjoyment

Sorry for that rant girlies!!

Isn't it hot today!!

PetitFilou1 · 22/07/2008 12:30

MrsMagoo Sounds like you don't have long to wait (fingers crossed)

Bealcain Good luck for the w/e if we don't hear from you

Re GBS testing - you know why we don't get tested for it routinely. Cost vs risk. There is a petition on the website though I think if you feel inclined.

No sunny or hot weather this way

MrsMagooo · 22/07/2008 12:34

PF I so hope you're all this stopping & starting is making me loose my remaining marbles !! Didn't have of this with DD, contractions started & that was that lol!

I have my idiot brothers wedding on Saturday & I soooooooooooooooo don't want to go!

I think I've signed that petition - I know I signed one re GBS testing anyway

Oh no what stinky weather have you got hun??

Bealcain Ooo yes good luck for the w/e how exciting

Good luck Sazzles {{{{hugs}}}}

Expectant · 22/07/2008 13:17

Sazzles hope all goes well with the scan.

Am having GBS at my next scan on Tuesday - it is standard practice here but I have to pay for medical care anyway.

Ann and all those asking about Dark Knight - saw it on Saturday and it is great. Figured it might be the last time I make it to the cinema for a while! They have 'gold class' here which means you get a reclining seat with blanket (aircon is always too strong), waiter service and lounge to use beforehand that serves drinks and nibbles. Cinema only has 30 seats as well. At about £10 a ticket - a nice treat and not ridiculously priced.
