TS Over here they don't really want you in hospital until you're 4cm dilated. Obviously that's impossible to tell but if your last labour was slowish I wouldn't rush off to hospital tonight unless you've got some really big contractions. They'll only start interfering at the hospital - trust your body, it knows what it's doing! Relish the peace, quiet and home comforts as long as you can! Warm baths, nice massage from your DH, lots of slow-release energy foods and sugary drinks just in case (eg oatmeal.)
Hope that's not too patronising, I just can't bear the image of you poor American ladies flat on your back with the stirrups!

dizzydixies · 12/07/2008 20:20

at your that I didn't join till 3rd Jan

not had time to catch up properly sorry - will try again tomorrow night when I get home

all well with us - saw mammydixies looking relaxed and comfortable at hospice today and took the girls in too which was nice

hope everyone ok and enjoying the weekend

ChaCha · 12/07/2008 20:58

TS - Your lists are soooo impressive!!! I think we should highlight your skills across all a/n threads - you will be in high demand. Hope you got your ipod and had hair done and that baby stays put a little while longer. Totally in agreeance with Buckets on the home comforts front - was just thinking candles, warm bath, magazine etc.. but bathroom is far from my usual sanctuary with it's half arsed paint job - I still haven't finished it and now I am looking at colour scheme for spare room tut-tut!

Sazzles - Hope you're having a good night out. We have just had yet another take away [really need to get my act together] and am sat with feet up while DH does a quick tidy up. He's working tomorrow so want little to do.

CC - How are you feeling this evening? Hope you're a little better

Shazza - Great, you've finished work and bags are packed, congrats!!! How do you feel being a lady of leisure? LOL at your DP's comment.

Oops - Glad to see you are still with us, hello to DD and everyone else posting so far.

TS - Forgot to mention the post natal group i've been on for over 3 years now here on MN - one of the ladies did v.similar to you but she made a document of all our posts from day one and either added them to a Y group we have set up or forwarded them. Was really nice to be able to look back at first time pregnancy and all our banter. I guess ppl could do that though by using your links. Well done, really impressed!!

PF - I feel as you describe baby dropping. How would i be sure?

Enjoy evenings everyone. xx

bigboydiditandranaway · 12/07/2008 21:00

Buckets how do u know if you're 4cm dilated, are u a mw?

PetitFilou1 · 12/07/2008 21:08

cha cha only the mw or doctor can tell for sure if you've engaged by feeling for the head (and mws way more reliable than GPs who are really deskilled, imo, in antenatal care). If you have engaged they will give you a fraction in fifths of how far down the head is - I can never remember how to interpret it though. Someone else on here probably can! I should find out on Tuesday - although the problem is in my case I think ds2 may have engaged feet or bum first instead of head first. Trying not to worry about it atm though.

Bigboy Sorry to butt in for Buckets but you don't/can't know if you are 4cm or more dilated without being examined - but the point is that if you turn up at hospital (in the UK) and you aren't dilated enough they'll just send you home again. Or at least try to! They don't really want you in until labour is well underway - mainly because they are so busy...

miamla · 12/07/2008 21:23

evening all, great new thread TS, you impress me more and more with every new one!

sooooo, have we finally got someone doing the conversion course from bump to baby???

AnnVan · 12/07/2008 21:39

PMSL at funny birth stories!

Buckets · 12/07/2008 22:06

A minimum of 4cm is what they time your labour from - which is why when you read your notes you might(like I was) be appalled to find they have totally disregarded the 24hrs of discomfort/pain leading up to then!
Of course you can't tell if you're 4cm but if you're the lucky type to get that far in your 1st labour without knowing if it's real contractions or BH, chances are your 2nd is going to be similarly quick so yes, hospital and exam would be a good idea. IIRC TS's contractions stopped when she went to hospital for her 1st so she might find it more comfy doing more at home.

TwilightSurfer · 12/07/2008 23:16

Hi!
Back home but very uncomfortable. Maternity triage was wonderful. I scored the greatest nurse and my doctor met me there. It was all quite nice except DD got overwhelmed, had a melt down and DH had to exit with her wailing. Better to find out her breaking point today. She told me afterwards she was so disappointed in having to leave because she wanted to see the pictures of the baby. I felt bad for her. It was just too much for her to process though.

As for me....
I'm contracting. Both the nurse and the doc stood there with wide eyes asking, "can't you feel that?" Well yes, but I've been having contractions like that since 20 weeks...these might be only slightly stronger. The pain I'm having could potentially be from stretching since it's not full belly....even the cervix pain could be from the baby settling lower. Since I was managing the contractions well, my waters were still intact, and I failed to further dialate within an hours time, my doctor allowed me to go home. He said he couldn't promise I wouldn't be back in a few hours. Oh well, I needed to soothe DD. Priorities.

So now I've got to figure out how to manage the process next time with finding care for DD and maybe a valium for DH. My iPod worked wonderfully for me.

Glad everyone likes the new thread. I just found it comforting to go through all the old posts and thought everyone else might enjoy it too.

Dizzy I was totally shocked you weren't on the first thread earlier since you're such a major part of our group.

Captain, did you remember you were calling yourself AngelGabrielintheCaveman at one point....is Gabriel the name your belly baby might end up with??

And Buckets, {{hugs}}thanks for your concern over my heading to the hospital too soon. However, I enjoy a professional's opinion. I'm not a doctor, nurse, midwife or doula. As a matter of fact, I've never had any medical training at all. I do trust my body and follow it's natural instincts. Today those instincts said "Go get checked!"

How are things this morning Twilight ? Any progression ?

We had DD1's 4th birthday party yesterday, was cooked from 7am, guests arrived at 1, last guests left at 8, DH and I in bed by 9 ....... me up at 5.30 with DD2
I feel sooooooooooooo exhausted it's unbelievable, I think the last 9 months have just caught up with me in last 24 hours.
Finished work on Friday though so now officially on Maternity Leave waahhhoooooooo

TwilightSurfer · 13/07/2008 08:12

Foghorn, sounds like you need another weekend to rest. Glad mat leave starts in just a few days.

I've been able to rest but hopefully there's been no progression. Still contracting though so I probably have. I've got to work out DD coverage first. Up now working on possibilities. Thinking about asking MIL but putting her up in a hotel down the street so she has private time. Fingers (and legs) crossed I can hold Reese in (without pain) for another week or so.

OP posts:
oopsacoconut · 13/07/2008 09:17

Morning All

TS glad you went to be checked out - that feeling of needing someone to check you out can be quite stong and that's why we went in on Friday. Settles your mind and eveyone elses!

Have you seen what the brangelina babies are called.... son Knox Leon, daughter Vivienne Marcheline. Okay we know they are famed for their wierd names but apart from Knox it's not too bad.

Still contracting - did a little of the nookie thing last night and DH said there is something up there - so he inverstigated apparently my cervix is pointing down where as he hasn't felt it befre during pregnancy. Also said it's all soft - he then went running off to check his NCT notes (yes he even took notes )and said that we were told if it feels like your cheek it's getting ready to go, if you can't find it or it's hard like your forehead it's not ready yet. Apparently mine feels like a very soft fat cheek. So my fanjo is not only fat on the outside it's fat on the inside too. .

Going to meet my folks for lunch today and see my aunt from South Africa who had arrived to stay for the summer.

ChaCha · 13/07/2008 09:55

Awwwww at DH Oops - even having his notes to hand, sounds like he is going to be a great dad and a very good help. I wonder who is going to be first?!
Ilana, if you're out there not long to go!! How are you all coping at your mums?

TS - How is DD today? Hope all is well. Very interesting celeb names - Knox is a name in our family - from my Scottish side.

FHLH - Congrats on mat leave! Here's to your catching up on some sleep - very busy but bet your DD had a whale of a time.

So far a peaceful morning with DC happy and playing, coffee is on and clothes ready for the line (got some teeny weeny vests last night and just cannot believe how small they are!) Need to go and get some PJs for hospital and yet another grocery shop but waiting for DH's inbetween jobs break.
Hope you are all having good Sunday mornings. Onwards and upwards then - trying v.hard to be 'normal' today and not complain! (makes mental note that it is not even 10am yet!)

Whoops, almost forgot, anyone who has time just quickly - i've popped the baby's bag by the door, in it is:
nappies, cotton wool, muslin squares, some vests and babygrows (and more to go in later today), a shawl (quite a thin one), some infacol (just in case), some sterilising tablets (just in case) and i cannot think of anything else.....anyone?

Cheers x

oopsacoconut · 13/07/2008 10:15

Chacha - we have added a small pot of vaseline to put on before those first dirty nappies - it makes the muconium easier to get off, as it can be VERY sticky. And even though it's summer we were told to pack a cotton hat for those first few hours post birth when they are regulating their temp. I am still taking bets on being one of the last ones to pop this baby never does as she is expected, i'll be all ready and still be sitting here in September

VintageGardenia · 13/07/2008 10:59

Hi, new thread already!

TS sounds like a bit of wishful thinking going on there. I'd say you're right to try to organise something for your DD rather than having her there during the birth - I would think it would be rather overwhelming for her and stressful for the two of you. Hope you are feeling well today.

All the advice I've been given so far has been to stay at home for as long as possible when labour actually does start. Over here, it seems that if you go to hospital they are likely to try to have at you with crochet hooks and drips and so on just to get you fitting into their schedule. Or, as Buckets says, get you on your back with your legs in the air. But it was 10 years ago I last did this quite possibly Ireland has come out of the dark ages moved on a little since then. Anyway I am hoping not to be scooting in, but languishing at home for a bit. Who knows, though?

Is it after 37 weeks that a baby is not considered premature?

pf sounds rather uncomfortable there with your baby dropping. Are you still working? I hate to think of people having to work in uncomf circs.

ChaCha how sweet your bag sounds! I have hastily thrown some baby things in with my own but I am going to put them into a separate bag this morning! I got a nice free one with my Liz Earle stuff the other day (someone else had a delivery of same, I think, too) so I might use that. Do you have a shawl or blanket or something to wrap the baby in when you take him or her home? Even if just transition from hospital to car and car to house, might need a little extra something.

sazz hope you had a yummy dindins last night, dizzy glad your mum is comfortable and glad the girls got to see her. You must feel very happy about that . oops what a star your dh is! Have a lovely lunch.

My recipe for the late pregnancy blues / fed-upness - do what I did yesterday. Huge lunch with 8 female friends, we drank champagne (which DP had phoned ahead and ordered for us!) and wine (including me!) and I very naughtily had a Bellini, the first spirits I've tasted in this pregancy. It was fab and went on till 8 o'c then my best friend came home with me and stayed till 11 chatting. I had such a lovely time (I hope they did too) and still feel nice today (though guilty re. the alcohol, please don't judge me). And before lunch I had highlights put in my hair and I bought new earrings and some Jo Malone perfume (NOT Vintage Gardenia, for a change!) and didn't spend a single penny in Mothercare or Boots. I'll be skintily broke now for the next month but I don't expect I'll be out and about much more from now on. It was definitely the last hurrah!

sarahnh · 13/07/2008 11:26

Morning Ladies,

Great Thread TS and i hope you are doing ok and lo is behaving herself...

Well i am very , as you all know i had the chicken poxs a couple of weeks ago.. now i seem to have developed a horrible itchy rash on my stomach and its driving me mad.. i reckon its just one of the pregnancy rashes but i have already told my dh that if it doesn't stop by the end of week 37 i am getting this baby out!!!!!xxxxx

pregnancy1 · 13/07/2008 11:35

Morning everyone,
Everyone sounds more upbeat today - must be the sun. TS good luck - keep us informed & I'll keep my fingers crossed for a complete pain-free, fast and healthy labour for you

Sarah hope your chicken pox clears up asap.

No news here - I'm not sure I'm nesting, but I'm certainly trying to get organised (although I did start cleaning windows at 8pm last night before making a batch of brownies and delivering them to my parents so I wouldn't be able to eat them all). Did 3 loads of baby washing yesterday and am on the 2nd of my 3 nappy washes today. Nobody warns you that whilst you can get tonnes of items into each wash, it just means they take that much longer to hang up (and then take down again when it starts raining!) DH is on strict instructions to force me to pack my hospital bag too. Looks like I'll be searching all our old threads to find the lists so I make sure nothing is forgotten (love the ipod idea TS)
Only 9 more days at work .

punksnotdead · 13/07/2008 11:57

Hi TS yeah i would love to be added got 2 DD already 13 and 9 and this one DD3 is due on 15th but have CS booked for 7th as have already had two. Glad you are home and doing ok today, I though I was gonna go last night irratable uterus since last week but the contractions last night were v painful and all over lots of popping thought my waters were gonna break on my mates white sofa (would have been mortified). Thinks are quieter this morning so gonna wait and see how I go consultant on Tuesday so we will see.

ChaCha · 13/07/2008 12:45

VG - Separate bag good idea. I had remembered the pain of trying to rummage through an over-stuffed bag post c-section in search of some small item so decided that the Samsonite weekend bag which is really compact will do for the baby and is fairly light and i will pack my stuff in a smallish case.

Question for VG too - speaking of Jo Malone, want some goodies, do you have any recommendations. Something for when baby is born - not too strong, light, fresh... MIL has always gotten me lots of Chanel but I really don't like it anymore and would like to tell DH and ILs to get me a gift set/fragrance from Jo Malone instead. A friend recommended this new mint and jasmine one though have yet to smell.

Kids at park with DH, sneaky banoffee tart time x

Mmmm how nice that you will be getting smellies ChaCha! Having said that I do remember when DS was born not wanting to put anything on in case it was too much for his little nose, I didn't even put deodorant on for ages .

I got some of the white jasmine / mint for Christmas and while it is quite nice and fresh for me it was too minty and not floral enough, what I like about JM stuff is the florallyness. To be overcome by mint was too Body Shop for me. The one I got yesterday was Lime Basil and Mandarin which you might think would be too sharp and citrussy (actually I can't really detect any mandarin) but isn't. It is fresh, but I don't know if I would call any of the Jo Malone smells light. Of course you could get candles and body lotion or bath oil which is a nice intro to a fragrance.

I love their boxes, too, I make jewellery, so I keep loads of my pliers and silvery bits and bobs in JM boxes!

Oops thanks for the names of Bradgelina's kids. Does anyone remember I fancied Viviann at one point.... Angie must have overheard me!! Glad she didn't get the Reese Eleanor memo. Talk about a FIGHT!!!

Wow, you all have to bring a lot of stuff to care for your baby while you in the hospital. I don't have to bring a thing. Blankets, clothing, diapers, wipes, hats, you name it and the baby has it..all covered in the cost. The only thing I "have to bring" is the car seat to take her home in. That's kinda the same thing for me as well...they'll provide all the dressing gowns and girly products required post delivery. You always end up with a really big goodie bag of stuff when you leave. I was actually impressed with the hosptial gown they gave me yesterday. It was good quality (and no holes). Apparently they have LOADS of popsicles too. I think DD and I were offered about 20 in the 2hours we were there.

Pregnancy1, my iPod was an awesome idea. I wore it the whole time. I had the volume down so I could communicate with everyone but the wonderfully soothing sounds of Live John Mayer concerts in the background pushed back all my stress. I didn't load anything but that so his voice and his guitar just went round and round. I recommend an iPod to everyone. And test drive several types of music first because you can never be totally sure what puts you in that cozy place.

I had my first DD in Mississippi and the difference between there and here in the UK is amazing everything was provided for you not like here where you have to take everything but the kitchen sink
