Sorry you've heard nothing helpful Bealcain, it's horrid when you keep thinking of clever answers and questions afterwards isn't it? Just googled this for you, seem you need less tea and more beer and that last sentence is quite intriguing:

'The absorption of iron is influenced by other constituents of a meal. Phytates, oxalates and phosphates present in plant foods can inhibit absorption, as can tannin in tea. Fibre may also inhibit absorption. Vitamin C greatly increases the absorption of non-haem iron. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, green peppers, and fresh leafy green vegetables. Citric acid, sugars, amino acids and alcohol can also promote iron absorption. Iron absorption can also be influenced by the amount of iron in the diet. Lowered levels of iron in the diet result in improved absorption.'

bealcain · 26/06/2008 17:24

thanks buckets.

i have been cutting down on tea and drinknig orange juice at every opportunity. still craving ice all the time so obv. getting lots of water.

now where were those natural induction methods TS posted earlier!

ChaCha · 26/06/2008 17:29

Hi girls, just had a good catch up. Bealcain - sorry to hear about the SPD, mines has been kicking in slowly but surely and i've been going to DH's osteopath for a while which seems to help a little. You have my sympathies, is hard work with 2 small children too. Have you friends/family around to give you a bit of a break?

Hello to everyone else. I have missed so much but i don't get much time to post here, we are just back from Egypt and can honestly say i am so happy to be back in my own bed and cooler temperatures and can't believe we actually went so late in pregnancy.

Who is our first lady due then? I have my next appt July 10 so should know my c-sec date then, am thinking first week August.

xx

ChaCha · 26/06/2008 17:35

Oh iron...missed that! Had no idea about taking tabs with orange juice though, must try that. I get sick everytime i try a tablet and went onto liquid iron which was just the same. M/W concerned and has asked me to take more blood so that they can refer me to Day Assessment Unit to get some sort of iron injection as iron levels are low and have dropped terribly after each delivery. Anymore tips? Am going to try the orange juice thing now.

My iron levels were 8.5 i think.

pregnancy1 · 26/06/2008 17:44

belcain - my doctor tried to put me on iron tablets for having an iron count of 11.3?!?! (My midwife was disgusted and said that it was fine for a pregnant woman). I'm taking spatone first thing every morning in a glass of orange juice (on an empty tummy) and not eating or drinking anything for about an hour. Apprently it's absorbed better on an empty tummy (with vit c). Plus calcium stops it being absorbed - so no tea or cereal etc within half an hour of taking it.

Poor you with the SPD - I am suffering, but getting away lightly as I just have to sit at my desk all day (and waddle to/from the tube station). I can't imagine having to regularly get up and chase after children.

hope you feel better asap

TwilightSurfer · 26/06/2008 17:49

Captain, I think I did all your chores by mistake. Have just put in last load (i think) of laundry. HAD NO INTENTION OF DOING LAUNDRY TODAY. Oh well. Some are still drying in the sun while sheets in the dryer will need folding.

{{{hugs}}} Bealcain. Don't look at the natural induction methods until you get your strength up. We don't want you going into labor while your tired. [FYI: Heme vs Non-Heme = Meat Sources vs Non-Meat Sources] Foods with the HIGHEST LEVELS of iron: Canned Clams, Beef Liver, Parsley, Black Beans, Sirloin Steak, Shrimp, Navy/Pinto/Kidney Beans. Try having a bowl of pinto beans and rice (any kind you like) with a glass of orange juice. Beans and Rice are a naturally perfect protien, the beans give you the iron you need, and the oj gives you Vit-C PLUS facilitates the obsorbtion of the iron. was one of my favorite courses in college.

Longway, I'll get the Group B Strep test in a few weeks...probably at the same time I have my last scan...36 weeks. The last time around I went into labor before the results were back so I was given antibiotics "just in case".

Welcome back Cha Cha.

DD has just discovered Tom & Jerry. Captain have our kids been texting????

Hi ladies, sorry to hear so many people feeling grotty one way or another today! Hope you are all able to put your feet up and indulge in the restorative snack of your choice...

I'm feeling fairly well prepared, though I'm sure that's down to first-timer over-excitement and that CC is right about needing only minimal stuff really! My SiL has scored a couple of large bags of clothing from Freecycle, so we're fairly well sorted there, and we've taken delivery of an heirloom moses basket (baby's grandpa slept in it 60 years ago!) and a carseat (not antique obviously!)...

DH is finding shopping/name discussions/antenatal classes a bit overwhelming, but for some reason my iron levels are something he can really get interested in (strange chap!) - last night he chose me a fiorentina pizza 'because it has spinach'

Oh and can I join the facebook gang? I am Jenni Rhodes, the only one in London I think...

Have sent you a friend request pertelote. I hope so anyhow. If it is you I'll link you (and bealcain) into a thread on there that we had going to introduce ourselves to each other....

Just lost it with dd again - she weas twiddling her hair, which is in 2 bunches today so v dangly- and it landed in the pasta sauce still in her bowl. raaah!

Buckets · 26/06/2008 18:34

Ooh Albs, can you link me to that, I'm not too sure how to find chatty stuff on Facebook. Cheers, (OB).

Buckets · 26/06/2008 18:36

PS Albs, my bathroom hasn't been cleaned for over a month so don't feel bad . Far too busy baking.

pertelote · 26/06/2008 18:36

Thanks ALBS, that's me alright! Pleased to meet you .

Snap SazzlesA, I finish work next Thursday too. And I'm finding people very willing to offer seats too! I guess there's no doubt now that the bump is a baby and not just lard... I don't let them barge me, either, if necessary I sort of encircle the bump with an arm and say 'exCUSE me' in a calm but carrying voice! Definitely looking forward to stopping though. Which reminds me, any of the other commuters know whether you can get the remaining months of an annual season ticket refunded if you're no longer using it? Bought mine just before the BFP so I've got about five months left which is quite a few ££...

miamla · 26/06/2008 20:22

you can definitely get a refund on your season ticket. just pop into one of the ticket offices and they'll sort you out
actually, that's if its an underground one. don't know about overline trains

so ALBS are you sitting down and ignoring the exploits of your DD? sounds like you need to sit on your own for a few minutes doing nothing. get DD to do the washing up and she can wash the ends of her hair at the same time!

poppysocks · 26/06/2008 20:48

Bad day with DD here too. Think I pushed her a bit hard on a long walk to tire her out, causing tantrums about absolutely everything when we got home. DH working late too so cream crackered now. Terrible twos have def. set in now. Great timing isn't it...

That reminds me TS - when you're next updating the list could you update DD's age? She's 2.4 now.

This whole having a baby in a few weeks thing is sinking in now.... This week the two friends who had to have theirs before ours have popped, so now it's just me left. Also work coming to an end (though not next week ). Starting to panic on that front actually as so much still to do. Eek.

gigglegirl · 26/06/2008 20:54

evening all!
bealcain - seems like you and I have had a similar day. I had my weekly trip to hospital today was there for 3 hours. Scan lasted 5 mins and consultation about 10. Sonographer and Midwife were lovely, so lovely that when the midwife asked how I was feeling and how the itching was I burst into tears.

Then the drs arrived. Had two of them today. One didn't speak and seemed fascinated with the light switch (female and junior I think). Other (Registrar and Male) didn't look at me once flicked through my notes but wasn't reading them as he was asking questions that answers were right in front of him. When I was asking for help with the itching and sleep suggested calamine lotion despite me saying three times it didn't work and then repeated bloods and said come back next week - oh and apparently accoriding to him the blood levels are the be all and end all and even if I feel like this they will do nothing and I WON'T need to be induced. Why can't I get a consistent answer!!

Feel really really angry today but was as always rubbish when there although midwife did do her best and kept saying can you not give her anything? His reply calamine lotion!!

Haven't done a ton of work I need to do, organising a BBQ for 200 on Sunday, bathroom refit booked in for 14th July, hall still needs painting and carpet being fitted 28th July. Still not ready for the baby and have loads of things I need to buy - just feel totally pants tonight!

Goodness me guys, sorry to hear how rubbish everyone is feeling.

poppy, rang doctors who said I should come in for an assessment - he asked me whether I felt fit to fly, I said yes, he listened to my chest, and confirmed me as fit to fly.... Also found it amazing that the order of Easyjet's boarding is as follows:-

1 Speedy Boarding (SB) -passengers who have paid a fee to be the first to be called to board the flight.
2 Special Assistance (SA) -passengers with a disability, elderly, infants, children under the age of 2 years.
3 Boarding Group A (A) -internet checked in passengers and 1-30 of airport check in passengers.
4 Boarding Group B (B) -all remaining passengers.

"Unfortunately, we do not offer any priority seating for expectant mothers."
OK, can deal with that, but I cannot believe that they put speedy boarders above (2)people with genuine need to board first!! .

sazzles, what do you want to do about tomorrow? Nice day here today but then rained (just as I was doing something and didn't notice the very nearly dry washing getting wet again )...

Evening ladies

245 messages in 2 days. At this rate thats a new thread every 4 days. Which means we will need at least another 16 threads before we all pop Do you think we'll get kicked off MN before then, or I think we're in a very good position to claim squatters rights

I've added a few of you on FB!

BTW Rest of pram arrived today Very pleased with it, but it's ok DD, it's at my sisters

ataraxis · 26/06/2008 21:16

sazzles, sounds sensible - don't think a trip in the rain sounds like much fun . Let's sort something out for after hols.... did I mention I am going to France next week?

gigglegirl · 26/06/2008 21:18

sazzles - saw the top consultant last week and whilst she didn't give me any more concrete answers she at least said I am sorry that there is nothing I can do for you and looked at me so think I may try and be stroppy next week and see her - if she is there which i don't think she is every week.
