The last message I posted seems to have filled up the old thread so I thought I'd start a new one.

Since bump size was our last topic, I thought this might do for a thread title.

debinaustria · 11/01/2008 12:41

Congratulations Sybil, thought of any names yet for your little boy?

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 13:01

All the names I wanted my dh hated (Tristan, Noah, Dominic) he is incredibly difficult to please and likes really plain traditional names.

So we have so far agreed that we will probably go for James, with Jamie as the shortening. The kids really like this too and have already started to refer to the baby as Jamie, which I think is a really positive thing, as it makes him a much more real person to them now that he has a name.

I do get to choose the middle name (although not Tristan as he really hates it), so I think I might go for James Dominic. Does anyone else have their names yet?

gr1973 · 11/01/2008 13:09

I'm quite traumatised about names. Me and DH dont seem to like any boys names at all.

The boys names that I do like fall into banned categories - in top 10 names, someone in family, celeb/tv hijacked name, ex-boyfriend names). There are maybe one or two names that I like but DH hates them. Am trying not to stress about it but am now convinced I will never find a boys name and will obviously therefore have a boy .

We are in dilemma re finding out sex. Pre-pregnancy I would have def wanted to know, DH very against. Since pregnancy I'm not too bothered and DH still against. He now wants to know and I'm thinking I'd like a surprise. This may conflict with earlier post where I was excited about finding out. Who says women are fickle?

debinaustria · 11/01/2008 13:22

Sybil - and what's wrong with Tristan - tell your dh that my son Tristan is very happy with his name!!!

We haven't thought about names at all yet, but we'd like one that is pronounced the same in English and German. Also want one that's easy to say, both my boys have had trouble pronouncing s, st, tr and f, being called Stefan and Tristan had posed some problems!!

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 13:34

Deb I love Tristan and it would be my preferred choice but he is adament that it is not for him. He also has categories of names that are not allowed, these are:

horses names (anything like Rosie, Daisy, Sadie, Bluebell, Poppy etc)

Geographical names (Savannah, India, Chynna etc)

and then my personal favourite, Stupid names, which is bascially anything that doesn't fit into the first two categories but which he still doesn't like, (i.e. Noah, Jonah, Micah etc)

You can see how we have ended up with only the one choice can't you?

goingfor3 · 11/01/2008 13:40

Me and DP have no idea about names. The girls both have quite poncy names so we have to find another equally poncy name. the name I like is Matilda which most people hate and dp soesn't like it but as I have suggested it with every pregnancy he said I can have it if I want. I like Reuben but dp really doesn't so this baby will probably be namless for a few days like DD2 was!

goingfor3 · 11/01/2008 13:42

I like the name Florence but it falls into the Geographical names catagory which puts me off and dp doesn't like it so it's out anyway!

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 13:51

I like Florence too but was obviously not allowed it. Poncy names wise I really like Beatrice. I know it is old-fashioned but I know a little girl called Beatrice and it is just perfect for her. My dd calls all her dolls Beatrice and I am sure if we were having a girl she would be insisting on it!

ChinaSurprise · 11/01/2008 13:58

DH and I have agreed to keep name ideas secret from everyone and I fear MN probably counts. But is probably best that way as it's hard enough getting agreement from each other, let alone courting other opinions!
I have one of horses names myself btw

Upsidedowncake · 11/01/2008 14:22

I started off at 11 stone 4 having not lost the 4 pounds from the ectopic, then put on another 3 pounds on to boobs in six weeks and am still 11 stone 7. This is he same pattern as with ds1 though my boobs are even bigger. Why do they need to be this big?

Sybil, our names are Dorothy and Dominic as has to begin with a D. Other boys' D names are very difficult if you're not Scottish (Duncan, Dougal) or black (Dwight, Dwayne). I have a cousin called David and for some reason don't like Daniel.

Can anyone think of any other good boys' D names. (DH's family have produced 1 girl in the last 25 children.)

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 14:29

China, what can I tell you, I married a very annoying man. I personally liked lots of those names when having dd but god is he difficult to please. You really can't please everyone, when we told dh's nan the name we have chosen for ds she was horrified, not sure why, its a really ordinary name!

Its the one good thing I can say about my mil, she has never judged our name choices. Mind you, after I had our first child I did come close to nearly killing her for the way she comtinually referred to him as 'my little boy'. It was when she told us she wanted a family portrait that included her, him and my dh but not me, that violence very nearly occurred.

nettiehay · 11/01/2008 15:13

Hi All, just wanted to say hi and that I wish all those having scan next week good luck - I am off skiing for a week, so won't be around, but will be thinking of you all while I'm away.
Also wanted to say, I have absolutely no idea how much wieght I have put on as I don't wiegh myself on principle. That being said, I will need to wiegh my suitcase tonight so will find out then, and will give you an update when I get back (after huge amounts of swiss chocolate and hopefully, a pastuerised cheese fondue!)

sophiewd · 11/01/2008 15:20

Digby
Dalton
Devon
Dexter
Dudley

Josie57 · 11/01/2008 15:24

Sybil - that request for the portrait is outrageous! I can't believe people say these things as it seems so obvious that to say something like that would be hurtful and disrespectful. It would be fair enough if she just wanted a picture of her with her grandchild. Some people eh!

I also LOVE the name Jamie but we gave my ds James as a middle name so can't use this for our little bean.

I'm toying with Matthew and Benjamin but I know people who have called their children this - is it out of order to use these names as a result. One is an old friends of mine little boy who is 10 months old and the other is the son of dh boss. What is the etiquette regarding names in this situation?

Upside - the only other name I could think of beginning with D is Darren.

aberdeenhiker · 11/01/2008 15:25

My son's Duncan
We have a girl's name already but no boy's name for this one if it's a boy. We want a Scottish name since he'd be born in Scotland (and we have a Norwegian last name, I want my kids to feel rooted in the place they're born and brought up) but can't find any we like that aren't in the top 50 list. DH had two other kids with his name in his class all through school and is adamant that we stay far away from 'popular' names for his kids. Any favourite, non-common, Scottish boy's names?

needahand · 11/01/2008 15:45

Hi ladies

I am really annoyed, my post disappeared.

Just wanted to say that unfortunately I don't have much time to share my experiences with you (because of long working day and commute) but am glad to read about yours.

Thanks to whoever raised the weight issue (ernest?). I put on 3 st with DD1 and am desperate not to put on so much this time (still had 1st to loose before got pgt).

Was doing really well until Xmas (only 4lb) but am having a hard time since. I am absolutely craving all things sweet and am finding hard to resist. Have put on about 8lb now (4kg) and am putting 1 to 2 lb on a week...not good

ChinaSurprise · 11/01/2008 15:50

What about Darcy? Swoon!

I suggested Digby to DH but didn't get anywhere. I always loved that giant dog book!

Sybil cannot BELIEVE the portrait request!

Last night DH took a call from his sister, when she so tactfully decided to tell him that she'd been defending his potential to be a good father to their own dad, and aunt, who both apparently thought he'd be useless!!!
I wanted to throttle her. She has the sensitivity of George Bush!
Of course, the fact that his dad was an alcoholic abusive See You Next Tuesday who had to have restraining orders against him until he sobered up and his aunt is a no-feeling, money obsessed b*tch are neither here nor there. GRRRRRR. My poor DH. After getting over the initial shock he's been really getting into the idea and been (mostly) lovely. I felt so sorry for him. Haven't said anything to SIL as no doubt will only make it worse - she loves a drama.
Guess you can't choose your family...

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 15:51

Upside, what about Dylan, Dawson or Devlin?

You are all lucky with dh's wanting uncommon names. I think all of my kids names come in the top ten most years. Still, it is always easy to buy things with their names on, and dd fortunately doesn't have another girl with her name in her school year.

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 15:56

At least they do talk about him China, a couple of years ago I went to a family funeral on dh's side and was missed off the list of family members who'd mourn him. Apparently they 'forgot' me. This even though I am married to the dead man's only grandchild and even his nephew's girlfriend got a mention!

I swear, I am such a non-entity in that family. They seem to think dh's kids spring from his body as a perfect baby. A bit like Eve from Adams' rib maybe...

ChinaSurprise · 11/01/2008 16:31

No, this isn't my family slagging him off - this is his!
But I do feel for you. The last time I saw my gran before she died was the first time I realised how horrid she always was to my mum (her DIL) I was really shocked by it - and my mum was one of the few people who visited her regularly.
Families are a bloody nightmare.

gr1973 · 11/01/2008 17:27

aberdeenhiker - I do have a scottish name that's not in the top 50 but dont hate me for being selfish and keeping it to myself. Although me and DH are struggling with boy's names there is one that he is warming to (said scottish name) and we also have pact not to discuss names with anyone (including MN). Keep looking and you'll find one though. .

I quite like Aaron though (it wont work with our surname)- is that Scottish? It's not as popular as a lot of the other Scottish names that are in vogue at the moment I think.

It seems like a massive responsibility giving someone a name doesn't it???

sybilvimes shocked about the portrait!

I went to Monsoon and bought a boys shirt and a girls dress, they have a 7 day return policy on their returns so hopefully they can tell me what it is on Wednesday!

poppy34 · 11/01/2008 19:22

sybil I thought my mil was a loony but that story of the portrait is unbelievable. and my name is not a horses name!!!!!

to add to the weight debate I think I've put on about 2/3 kgs (the bathroom scales are not the best but its of that order).

you can buy ring fitters in jewellers - they are little pieces of metal that you can mould inside your ring to make it fit better -only cost a few pounds but really good for making things fit. So far i've not had any finger changes but will keep an eye out.

Anyone else having trouble getting comfy at night with their growing (or in some cases lopsided ones..) - I just cant seem to get comfy and when I move suddenly get this really uncomfortable sensation like you're shifting shopping round in a carrier bag..
