OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsWednesday · 24/11/2004 09:40

One - girl
Two - girl

The first one said boy for my DS but the second one said girl.

Blimey Sweetheart, not long to wait then! Why does your midwife think you could be 14 weeks?

MrsWednesday · 24/11/2004 09:41

God, what's the matter with me today? Sorry.

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 09:43

because my last "period" only lasted about a day - if that - and she thinks it might have been implantation bleeding.

Although it's not unusual for me to have a very short period so I don't agree with her. She is sending me for an early dating scan just incase anyway.

Either way I can't have the neucal test done though because if I am 14 weeks I'll be past what teabelly said!!

Oh, I'm confussed now - does this mean I can't have the neucal test?????

Uwila · 24/11/2004 09:43

Yeah, test one said boy, and test 2 said girl. Sort of hoping for a boy, but won't be bothered if it's a girl.

Yes, teabelly is right on the dates for nuchal. So, either way this will not be a nuchal scan. However, I've never hear a connection between scans and any kind of learning disability. The only thing I've heard (and I think it's far from proven) is that a lot of scans late in pregnancy could damage hearing. This can't happen in first trimester because the hearing hasn't developed yet so there is nothing there to get damaged.

Personally, I have plenty of faith that scans are safe. If I were you, I would think oh good an extra free scan for me!

teabelly · 24/11/2004 09:44

A nuchal scan can only be performed during that 2 1/2 week window, after that the things they look for on that particular scan are no longer as apparent or accurate, and the earlier it's done the more accurate it is according to the Dr I saw. Is your nuchal scan provided by your hospital then? If not you can book a private one (if you want one) through most private fertility hospitals throughout the country. But they will look for the same abnormalies (in a slightly diferent way) at your 20 week scan and do similar blood tests at your hospital too.

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 09:54

We were going to have a private one done but at a later date (to confirm the sex)

I can't really afford to pay for 2 private scans and if there is something wrong I don't want to wait until I'm as far as 20 weeks to find out!!!!

teabelly · 24/11/2004 10:00

Sweetheart - my thoughts exactly, I'd dithered over paying the money, and then decided that I'd rather have tests done if necessary as early as poss. I was told the sex of ds at his 20 week scan - could you maybe pay for the nuchal, and then see what they say during your 20 week scan at the hospital?

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 10:04

Apparently the hospital sexing is not overly accurate!!! they have got quite a few wrong!!!

I'll wait and see what they say on Monday - If I am 9 weeks I'll ask for another scan to be done and see what they say. I'm sure they'll say no but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!!!

Uwila · 24/11/2004 10:22

Sweetheart, it should be very standard practicein your area regarding the nuchal scan. If they offer it, then you shouldn't miss out because you were sent for an earlier scan. And, if they don't offer it, then your not going to get it anyway.

I completely agree with wanting to know early on if anything is wrong -- and God forbid I might have to make a horribly difficult decision. For this reasonI actually had two nuchal scans. One on the NHS, and one privately at Fetal MEdicine Centre. FMC was far superior. If you are going to pay for a nuchal scan, I highly recommend them. They were more thorough, spent at least thirty minute in the scan itself, checked the heart valves, heard the heart beat, and so on. NHS got us in and out in about 5 minutes. Checked that a heart was there and beating but FMC actually plotted the heart rate and said it was just as it should be.

Don't know though if you are in or near London.

At least after this first scan, you will know how old the baby is. And that's good thing.

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 10:38

Thanks Uwila. The do offer the neucal testing as standard so I'm also of the opinion that I shouldn't miss out just because my midwife wanted me to have an early scan. I will be pointing this out on Monday should the need arrise.

Depending on what they say I shall look into private scans. I'm about an hour outside of London so it's not too far for me to travel.

Tessiebear · 24/11/2004 10:59

Sweetheart - if your m/w has insisted on this early scan and has got her facts wrong i am sure it is your right to insist another one at the right time. I personally wouldnt worry about having an extra scan.
Both the gender charts say a girl for me!!!!
But the second one says that DS2 should have been a girl. DS2 is a boy

Tessiebear · 24/11/2004 11:02

sorry DS1 should have been a girl

Tessiebear · 24/11/2004 11:06

Hope all went well yesterday Welshie!
WHERE IS COBWEB?!?!? Havnt seen her around for ages??

teabelly · 24/11/2004 11:09

Sweetheart I second Tessie and Uwila, if the M/W has your dates wrong insist on what's your right, it's not your fault afterall, and anyway if your like me you'd be pretty sure about your last cycle coz you'd have been testing away the month before, I know I was!!

Has anyone heard anything from Welshmum? Like Uwila I'm starting to get worried now...

Bubbaloo let us know how yours went this morning. Anyone else got a scan tomorrow? I have my hospital dating scan, and I think JennyWren said she had her nuchal...any others?

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 11:17

I've sent a CTA to welshmum, hopefully she'll respond to that.

I will be very firm at my appointment on Monday and demand to have another scan done

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 11:17

I meant CAT

Stallanzii · 24/11/2004 15:15

HI everyone

Blimey, this boards gets busy!

UKI - thanks for the advice about the blood test, I will grip with force next time! (By the way, I've decided June is a very lucky month so do not worry, you will be good to go lady)!

Scraggyaggy - Pregnacare tablets - i'm downing those too, along with zinc & calcium tablet every other day. I read Zinc is a wonder thing for mums to be.

Everyone else - I am now 10 weeks and a day. feel really good, keep laughing hysterically and giggling at inane things - comedy isnt doing it for me at all - but the boring day to day stuff - hilarious. I do think being pregnant is lovely, but it in a 'i've had a bottle of wine and feel great way' as well as the usual maternity feelings. Just fun

JonahB · 24/11/2004 16:15

Hi Everyone,

Can I join in? I've been keeping up to date with your thread, but didn't join in until now due to a previous missed m/c and a whole host of problems in my early pgcy this time, so I didn't want to tempt fate and write any messages, in case it all went wrong.

However, I've just had my 12 week scan on Friday am and I have a healthy little person in there, kicking around. Due date is June 5th, this will be my first.

I'm very very excited (in between feeling knackered, irritable, needing the toilet etc etc.........)

Uwila · 24/11/2004 16:25

Welcome Jonah! Must have been even harder to go it alone (i.e. without MN support). Glad it's going well!!

Where are you? Where are you going to have the baby? You might want to check out May thread too. There is a list of things second time mums would / wouldn't recommend buying frist time round. You might find it useful.

teabelly · 24/11/2004 16:25

Very quiet here this afternoon...I'm so busy at work, but can't muster the enthusiasm so thought I'd play about on here.

JonahB congratulations, welcome aboard, it's amazing when you see them in there isn't it. Hopefully your symptoms will lessen from now on.

Just had a look at the yahoo page - Katz your little one looks a right popppet, and NQWWWW you have a handsome pair there...I'm going to try and upload some pics tonight...although not being a tech wiz it'll probably take me a couple of days to get it right

Well 45 mins until the end of my working week, hurrah! Hope we hear soon from those who had scans yesterday and today. Good luck JennyWren for tomorrow, and anyone having them on friday. I'll try and post re mine tomorrow although I probably won't get a chance til dh gets home in the evening

MrsWednesday · 24/11/2004 16:26

JonahB, hello, welcome and congratulations. So pleased you got good news at your scan last week. Do you feel like it's real now? I had a scan on Sunday after some bleeding (and having had 2 m/cs this year) and saw the little bean bobbing around, waving its arms and legs around, and I'm starting to believe there might actually be a baby in there now!

Stallanzii, wish I was as jolly as you sound - I'm at the grumpy end of the hormonal scale unfortunately (for everyone else!)

Still no news from Welshmum? And Bubbaloo was having a scan today too isn't she? Thinking of you both, fingers crossed both went well.

MrsWednesday · 24/11/2004 16:31

Sorry Teabelly, I didn't realise yours was tomorrow - good luck!!! Is it the nuchal one?

teabelly · 24/11/2004 16:37

Mrs W, no I had the nuchal scan on the 12th...tomorrow is my first hospital (or dating) scan, can't believe I'm already 13+5, eek! a third of the way there now...all I have to do now is tell my boss - didn't pluck up the courage last week. This'll be the first bubba for this company and I'm not sure how the management will take it...still I guess I'll find out next week, can't wait much longer I'm really starting to show now!

Stallanzii · 24/11/2004 16:44

I think the jollyness is part hysteria and part lack of normal brain activity. Am enjoying myself though.

Everyone is talking about scans - mine is not until Jan 25th! (19th + week)! Feel jealous, but hope everybody's goes well and you all have a big smile when you leave the hospital.

xxx

MrsWednesday · 24/11/2004 16:45

Sorry, I can't keep up!

Wow, officially in the second trimester, time is starting to pass a bit quicker now. Those really early weeks completely dragged.

Do you work for a fairly small company then? Or is it all blokes?
