Hi this thread is for any first timers or anyone really who wants to chat about their imminent arrival and general lack of idea of what to expect!

I realise that there is already an October thread but there seems to be quite a few people who have come a bit late to join in the discussion on there. Hope this doesn't offend anyone

Hi all

I can finally report some significant progress!!

Without any prior warning my waters broke last night around 11pm"ish whilst watching Jonathan Ross!

I have been to the hospital since then, but they sent me home at 1am as i hadn't started contractions and hadn't even dilated

Pleased to say i have been having contractions since 4am. DH is brilliant, he is charting all contractions whilst fussing around me.

I know i may have hours of 'fun' to come, I'm petrified, but excited all at the same time.

speak soon
x

Stefka · 20/10/2007 09:59

How exciting for you mine! Did they let you know when you should go back to the hospital? How are the contractions? Hope you are doing well.

I had my usual night with period cramps. This morning I had some blood tinged discharge - I am hoping that this is a sign of some kind of progress.

Mine · 20/10/2007 11:21

sounds like you too may be in the very early stages of labour Stefka, as i started off in the same way.

My contractions are becoming a little more frequent now and more painful.

Mum has come over for support... she's a superstar, so is DH.

Hospital didn;t tell me how long to wait, so its just a bit of a mystery... i wish they would give idiot proof instructions!

All they said was that it was too soon and that i should wait a bit more....

i'll try and keep you posted.... it occupies my mind a bit!

Stefka · 20/10/2007 11:27

I was wondering about how you know when to go to the hospital - I guess you will have a sense of when you want to go in. Are you far away?

Did you have a bloody discharge? How long was it between that and things actually starting? I am so desperate for some action now!

Stefka · 20/10/2007 13:01

I am still getting cramps. I hope this is a good sign that things are on the move.

Mine · 20/10/2007 15:24

If it makes you feel any better i had the bloody discharge (turned out to be a 'show') at 11pm, followed by waters breaking after about 10mins with no pain what so ever until 4am!! So hang in there.

I've been having contractions ever since so almost 12 hours now. I went back to the hospital at 1pm today as the pain was a bit unbearable but i was only 1cm dilated so they sent me home.

Believe me Stefka.. you'll know when the real ones kick in.

I'm so disappointed that i've only dilated by 1cm after nearly 12 hours..... i'm relly not sure if i can do this now...

DH and mum being a brilliant support but i've started to doubt myself already. I'm so tired too, i really want some sleep, but the minute i even get an inkling of nodding off i get a contraction.

It looks to be a long day and night.

Collywobbles · 20/10/2007 15:31

Wow - Good luck Mine!!! Hang in there (easy for me to say I know!)

I was told at antenatal classes that they ususally like you to go in when your contractions are about 5 mins apart - but if you're unable to cope with the pain to go in before that..

Can't wait to hear more news - I'll be thinking of you. xx

Stefka · 20/10/2007 15:34

Well I am still getting pains so something is happening anyway. They are regular but in a pattern if you know what I mean. So they are not coming exactly every five minutes but they are coming constantly. I do have to stop when the come but I can still eat - in fact I just ate some pancakes.

Collywobbles · 20/10/2007 15:50

Good luck to you too Stefka - have you tried calling the hospital or your midwife? They may be able to give you a better idea what to do...

Mine · 20/10/2007 15:53

me too!
I've been grazing since 4am really, but got quite hungry at abt 2'ish and had a big mac and some fruit...... is that really bad?

Good luck Stefka.. sounds like we may be in the same boat. Keep tabs on when and how strong your pains are, its surprising how you will forget timings etc until you start to log them and see there is a pattern.

My DH has been logging my contractions and noticed that i get somewhat manageable ones frequently then REALLY painful ones every 45mins, so was able to tell me when they were so i was ready for it and got into a comfy position.

Do you have anyone with you??

Stefka · 20/10/2007 16:14

Not called the midwife yet but I might soon. Just trying to time them - it's quite hard! They seem to be about 30 seconds long every five mins but I think I need to time for a bit longer to be sure.

Eat what you fancy I say. I told my DH that I wanted pancakes so he made me some! He's very excited and has already packed the car. I did try to tell him we could have a long time before we need to go anywhere. I am glad he is here that's for sure.

Mine · 20/10/2007 16:19

i know.... i definitely couldn't do this without my DH here.

He too is excited, but i can see the fear in his eyes too!

five mins apart sounds promising, but only lasting 30 seconds... you luck thing. I had some lasting over 2 mins.

Do you know what you're having?

Stefka · 20/10/2007 16:25

No we don't know the sex - do you?

30 seconds might be good in one way but it also might mean I have a long way to go which is not so good. I want to have something concrete before I call the midwife - it's such a funny business this - so hard to tell what is going on!

Mine · 20/10/2007 16:37

i know. I thought i was so sure that i had dilated enough to go into the next stage of labour, but clearly i was very wrong!

We don't know the sex of ours either, although i have a sneaky suspicion its a boy, buy my DH thinks its a girl. I couldn't careless to be honest, i just want the baby to come with little or no complications.

Trust your instincts Stefka.. if you're not ready to call the midwife then don't. The internal examinations are not nice so hang on as much as you can to avoid them.

I hope the pain is bearable.

Are we the only two with any action today???!

Stefka · 20/10/2007 16:41

I think so. It's quite nice to have someone to do it with! Is your back sore? Mine is. I hve a hotwater bottle strapped to my back at the moment.

I really hope this isn't a false alarm.

Mine · 20/10/2007 16:54

it definitely helps... i actually had a really stupid thought the other day... i though that if i was ever in a long drawn out labour i would get bored silly just sitting around with nothing to do!! How stupid and wrong was i. The time is flying by and all i have done is breath deeply!

Saying that i'm also trying to keep busy and active - it helps fight the pain. I have done 2 loads of washing, cleaned the bathroom and unloaded the dishwasher. My DH thinks i'm insane, but how else am i supposed to get through this!

How are you passing the time?

Collywobbles · 20/10/2007 16:56

Wow you guys - as an onlooker, I'm partly jealous that it's not me and partly relieved! It's really exciting seeing your progress...pancakes eh? I'll remember that when my turn comes!

I still say just ring the midwife if you want some piece of mind...don't worry about bothering her, that's what she's there for! Better to call with a false alarm (although doesn't sound like one to me) than to sit worrying at home.

xx

Mine · 20/10/2007 16:56

BTW.. my back is definitely sore... all my contraction pains are felt in my back.... does that mean anything bad i wonder??

Stefka · 20/10/2007 16:57

Wow that's impressive! I am just watching the TV!

I have sent DH for a nap. He was up early for work so he's really tired. I'll need him to have energy later on. I like the distraction of the TV for now.

Trying to decide if I should call the midwife and/or my mum.

Mine · 20/10/2007 17:06

how abt calling mum, then the midwife.... it may settle your mind to have an expert opinion re what stage you're at. You may be 5cm dilated but just don;t know it!

I'm vegging in front of the tv now.. x factor is on soon, so i'll see how long i can sit still for.

Stefka · 20/10/2007 17:08

I think I will call my mum - I don't want to get her too excited though.

I am going to watch the x factor too!

Stefka · 20/10/2007 17:47

I called them both.

My mum was very excited!

The midwife was really nice and said that I can call as often as I like. She's happy for me to stay home right now but I am to call back if the pains get longer and stronger.

primigravida · 20/10/2007 20:38

Stefka and Mine, how are you guys keeping? I'm in the same boat as you two. I went into hospital at 4am this morning but the midwives sent me home as I was only 2cm dilated. Have you two tried cocodamol? The hospital gave me a strong version of it to help with the pains. I also find that getting on all fours during a contraction helps with the lower back pains as does DH massaging me. Good luck you two!

Dalrymps · 20/10/2007 20:48

Wow stefka and mine!I knew something had to happen soon but didn't expect two of you at once, i hope it's me next!
How you both doing now? thats if you're still there, guess you might have both gone in to hosp by now
My 4th day overdue today, fancied a dominos pizza today but there isn't a dominos here so dh drove me to newcastle an hour away to get one , we practiced the route to the hospital on the way and picked up a moses basket stand too whilst there so wasn't just a pizza trip in the end, it helped to take my mind off being overdue anyway.
I had what I though might be mild contractions during the night last night, they were coming every 15 mins and lasting nearly 2 mins but only had about 4 and then they stopped , woke up feeling frustrated! tried just about everything now, even rumpy pumpy with dh this morn but nothing! still getting stomach ache on and off... guess i'll just have to wait.
Hope everyone else is doing ok, can't wait to hear what happens with stefka and mine!!!

Stefka · 20/10/2007 20:48

ohhh 3 of us on the go!
