I struggled last time until dd’s got snipped when she was 6 weeks old so hoping this time if baby has one it can be snipped ASAP @Gronk27

CaseofEllen · 13/02/2019 14:29

Hi all! Thought I'd reply on here @Gronk27 and @Wineandchoccy οΏΌ

@Gronk27 I have heard so many good things about this company! I will definitely check it out. I'm not sure if I could use hypnobirthing as my main source of relief but I definitely think some of the breathing techniques etc will be really useful! Will you be in a birth centre or a hospital?

@Wineandchoccy everyone has told me it all goes out the window anyway Grin is the placenta injection to help it along? Instead of waiting for it to happen? It asks me to tick a box in my notes but I don't really know what's best..

Has/will anyone be having an epidural? I considered it but the catheter and risk of UTI really put me off.

Hope everyone is doing okay today xx

Gronk27 · 13/02/2019 14:37

@caseofellen It’s interesting because basically it teaches how Birth is supposed to happen and when we get stressed or frightened adrenaline actually stops labour from progressing as well and makes it more difficult (potentially painful). It’s also good because it rules nothing out-pain relief, etc. It simply teaches you that you actually have choices and are in control and can remain calm and relaxed regardless of what happens. I’m going for birth centre but it’s in the same place as the labour ward where I am.

Jellybean023 · 13/02/2019 14:55

Checking in.

Just found out I’m to be induced at 39 weeks due to GD, so likely to be a Feb baby in my case, but still following with interest.

Sictransitgloria · 13/02/2019 15:43

@angelmiracle oh how I wish I’s saved some annual leave. Thanks for advice on the clothing sitch haha.

I had a bit of a funny episode, felt really dizzy/heavy headed. Like vertigo. Still feel a bit dodge, came home early from work and just slumped on the sofa now. Hoping it will pass.

Jenfur · 13/02/2019 16:09

@Wineandchoccy Do they not check for tongue tie as standard? DH and his siblings all had tongue tie so we were cautious that DS would but I don't remember ever actually raising the concern with anyone. I feel like I would've done if I was worried about it, if that makes sense. Also it seems so common, why don't they check?

Glad I'm not the only one who didn't like pethidine. It seems to be recommended as the next step up from gas and air but it made me so groggy, I feel like I missed out on a lot of the birth because of it.

In addition to that - for the people who were saying they can't believe they're going to be in charge of an actual baby - I was so out of it with the pethidine that I felt like I was awake for a few seconds and asleep for a few seconds alternately. They put DS on me and I remember thinking "I really need to wake myself up properly or I'm going to drop him on the floor". You really are responsible straight away 😬

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 13/02/2019 17:00

Checking in!

cardboard33 · 13/02/2019 17:05

@caseofellen we are also doing the positive birth company digital course depsite being v cynical about the whole idea of "hypnobirthing" as it sounds like you're being hypnotised. We think it actually needs a different name as tbh it's mostly just about being informed of the different options that are available (there's a lot on pain relief and also just taking you through the different decisions you will need to make at the birth so you can think about what you want to do in advance) and knowing how you might want to change the birthing environment. We live very local to where the lady is based and she actually came to a mum2be talk I went to to sell her wears so most people we know have done the face to face course costing lots of money but we've been very happy with the digital pack. It cost Β£20 when I got it but it's normally Β£35. I don't think we would have got on well with a face to face session as there's stuff that we are laughing about as it's just not us, but then other stuff which we've found really useful.

cardboard33 · 13/02/2019 17:11

Also @assumeitwassomethingclever I think it was you who replied saying that you are still waiting to feel pregnant and I'm the same. I've expected all of the way through that at some stage I will truly feel pregnant but don't depsite all of the medical appointments I've had and I still feel slightly ridiculous asking for seats etc as I don't feel I'm pregnant enough even though I clearly am at this stage. I'm now at the point of just assuming that I never will feel "properly" pregnant (whatever that means) and will just suddenly become a mum. I suppose it's also because I'm planning to work so late (39 weeks) and haven't had any of the nesting urges that you've all been getting!

Gronk27 · 13/02/2019 17:21

@Sictransitgloria me too. Midwife didn’t seem overly concerned as long as I didn’t have headaches, blurred vision, lights. Said if it persists maybe a GP check up. I think I’m just tired, hungry and thirsty a lot and need to make sure I’m on top of my Vit D (I had a deficiency previously which made me dizzy).

@cardboard33 exactly we did the in person course and the hypnobirthing doesn’t really do it justice.

I got put off pethidine at my breastfeeding session as it can make both you and baby groggy. My friend who just gave birth thought it was amazing though!

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 13/02/2019 17:28

@cardboard33 it was me that said that 😊 I still feel like I can do stuff that I could normally do (except running up the stairs. That stopped a couple of months ago!!) and have to keep reminding myself that I shouldn't fling myself round as much and need to take it easy.
I know what you mean by feeling like you're just suddenly going to become a mum. I'm worried it's going to be a bit of a shock to the system that I probably wouldn't have had if I actually felt pregnant and worked myself up to having a baby.

I feel like this is something you probably shouldn't say but I'm getting a case of the cold feet. I want this baby so much and it will be very very loved once it's born (already is!) but I just feel a bit like I'm a lamb being led to the slaughter at the moment as I have no idea what to expect and how I'm going to adjust. Maybe lamb to the slaughter is a bit dramatic but you know what I mean...

cardboard33 · 13/02/2019 17:33

@gronk27 I think it should be called something like "things you should probs know about having a baby"ing as we were so put off by the name, and then just got it as it was Β£20 and thought it was the same as a yoga session so hopefully we'd get at least one positive from it. Husband had also said it's been much better than he expected which is major given how evidence/science focused he is!

I can't have pethidine due to the epilepsy. Need to ask if there are any other opioids (?) available and if I'd be able to get them on prescription if not and bring them with me. Really don't fancy an epidural as hate the idea of not being able to feel parts of my body.

cardboard33 · 13/02/2019 17:40

@gronk27 they should just call it "stuff you should probs know/think about before giving birth"ing rather than putting people off with a weird name. The main reason we got the pack is as we decided that for Β£20 we would take something from it and it is only like an hour and a half of yoga. Even husband has enjoyed it which is a big win given how factual and cynical he is! I definitely feel more empowered now I know more about what will or could happen, but I've not really ever been scared of giving birth anyway.

I can't have pethidine due to the epilepsy. I need to find out what other opioids (?) are available and if they can give me a prescription for others in advance if not. I really don't want an epidural as I hate the idea of not being able to feel my body but we shall see given induction and/or a c section are still on the cards.

cardboard33 · 13/02/2019 17:45

Also just to say about pethidine, my mum was given it just before I was born as the staff were convinced I wasn't going to be born any time soon. As it happened I was here less than an hour later so got the full wack of it rather than my mum. This meant that when I was born I didn't cry for about 5 mins and my mum really panicked as she was expecting me to cry (as that's what all babies do in films etc right?) and no one told her it was because I was drugged up, so she just sat there worrying that there was something wrong with me.

Moral of the story: not all babies cry at birth, particularly if you've recently had some drugs. She said that she really wisjes someone had told her that in advance, as I was her first!

PartridgeJoan · 13/02/2019 17:56

Checking in! The thread is moving faster than I can keep up with! Went for a reflexology appointment at 37 weeks yesterday and felt like baby was going to pop out there and then! Not long now ladies :)

TheWanderlust · 13/02/2019 18:07

Hi ladies πŸ‘‹ checking in! Our EDD is very much brought forward from 06/03 ... induction has started. Hopefully baby girl will be in my arms tomorrow 🀞🏼

Gronk27 · 13/02/2019 18:23

@cardboard33 Defo a better name! My OH is so much more involved and informed because of it. He's been amazing, he's suggesting practising 'our' breathing tonight! He also piped up quite a lot with the midwife earlier. Some of it is a little funny, I proper sniggered at 'Keeper of the cave' and huge 'toolkit' but it all makes total sense. I don't like the idea of an epidural either.

@thewanderlust all the very best!!

melissa112 · 13/02/2019 18:29

Checking in. Thanks for the thread @Angelmiracle

Oh wow @TheWanderlust best of luck with your induction and hope to hear news of your little ones arrival soon x

As I've been in and out for monitoring the past few weeks my regular midwife said I didn't need to see her as she'd only be doing what they did at the hospital so now my next appt with her is the 38 so one. Have I missed the birth options appt? Or should I be making a plan myself?

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever I know what you mean re:feeling like a lamb to the slaughter. I go through phases of real fear, then to excitement the next minute. I feel quite overwhelmed with it all and that I'm just not prepared even though we pretty much are now in terms of stuff for the baby etc. Sometimes he kicks and I get a real panic feeling, like I still don't feel like it's real somehow.

Went shopping with my mum today for hospital bag stuff.. finally think I have pretty much everything except nursing bras. Just need to wash it all now as I never wear anything without washing it first (DP thinks I'm strange with that one!) And pack it all up. Been out from 1 til 6 and feel like I've run a marathon. I keep mentally patting myself on the back for doing so well walking around for so long Confused🀣 I remember the days of dog walking up moors and mountain and not feeling like I've done enough. Now a potter round the shops has left me ready for bed!

thefirsttimer · 13/02/2019 18:32

Checking in! Missed all of the last thread it just got away with me.

Looking forward to seeing lots more baby announcements over the next few weeks!

Jenfur · 13/02/2019 19:42

@melissa112 I think my next midwife appt is supposed to be 36 weeks but I'll be 37+4 by then and midwife has said we'll go through my birth plan then. So I would think you'll do this at 38 weeks if you haven't done it already.

@TheWanderlust best of luck! It feels so soon that these birth announcements are starting, especially as I'm not due til 22nd March, still feels a long way off.

@cardboard33 DS didn't cry at birth either (after pethidine but I can't remember how long). I didn't actually pay attention to it at the time as he was on me so I could see he was alright but definitely a good heads up for first time mum's (or second time if your first cried, I suppose!). Also, DS slept a lot the first couple of days and didn't do much feeding because he was so groggy - not one person mentioned that this could be due to pethidine and the fact the ward was stiflingly hot.
Instead they kept banging on about it not being right, scared the hell out of me. He was days old and perking up before anyone said that pethidine makes them sleepy, that would've saved a lot of worry.
