@SpriteGirl you do have a choice in which hospital and I wouldn't expect you'd have to justify it that much. For all other procedures etc there's a choose & book system so it should be the same for giving birth.

In theory I'd have preferred the city one which has a women's hospital with a children's hospital attached (plus I work at the adult hospital which is also attached) but it's about 30min drive away. My family has a history of fast labours (my mum and sister both had labours lasting less than an hour from first contraction to birth) so I opted for the one five minutes away. That was lucky as I gave birth to DS in less than 2hrs and, despite setting off immediately after first contraction, I arrived fully dilated.

I guess take logistics into account too - if you need to travel there at rush hour etc. I also don't know if you'd have to go there for any extra monitoring (I had to go to my hospital about 2 times for reduced foetal movement and 2 times due to a smaller than average bump). It may be worth doing the tour of both maternity units before deciding too, and whether they have private rooms for afterwards (and whether there's a charge for using them) or the size of the postnatal wards (eg 8 new mums and newborns = a sleepless night plus sleepless days due to more visitors coming and going, 4 new mums and newborns means it may be less hectic). Also have you checked the policy on partners staying, would they be able to stay overnight with you if you wanted?

Hi everyone. 6+2 now according to my lmp, and no symptoms yet to speak of.
I've been full of a cold and a hacking cough, which is making me wretch got the past week but it feels like it's ebbing now - hope ms isn't close on its heels.
Planning to phone the mw base next Friday to kick things off (we self-refer here, and get sent away if call8ng too early on).
Anyone else who hasn't had an early scan worried it might be twins? I was reading stats online and probability is a little over 1%, but increases to about 12.5% if you're still breastfeeding (which I am). gulp Confused

SpriteGirl · 31/12/2017 18:25

Thanks @StrawberryLemonade and @Gizzymum you’ve made me feel better. This really got to me I don’t know why prob just hormones making me feel down. I just feel if the choice is mine by right then I should’ve been informed. Anyway hopefully it won’t be a big deal.

The hospital I want is a bit further away but a much better journey traffic wise. The other one has had some pretty damning reports recently.

RiverRose · 31/12/2017 20:00

Wow lovely to see how quickly this thread is moving Smile

I have a NHS scan on Tuesday so looking forward to that.

We're staying in for New Years with the kids so just an ordinary night for us. I'm full of a cold (again!) and not up for much else!

Happy New Year ladies!!

peterpanwendy · 31/12/2017 20:12

I've got a little bit of discomfort above and to the right of my bellybutton, is that baby related? I'm worrying :(

somersetsinger · 31/12/2017 20:28

Tino,I haven't had an early scan, am an older mum and am breastfeeding but there's no flipping way I'm entertaining the thought of having twins. I think I would be sicker and fatter. I had better be right about that.

Happy new year, everyone.

StrawberryLemonade · 31/12/2017 20:45

peterpan I wouldn’t have thought so as your uterus isn’t near the level of your bellybutton until 20 weeks. Smile

BertieBotts · 31/12/2017 21:43

I have no idea about hospital choice because when I had DS I only lived near one hospital. I would have thought you'd have time to sort things like that though, and perhaps they've booked you in with one if the midwives run from there?

Aspergallus · 31/12/2017 21:59

I'm just 5 weeks today and feeling terrible.

Nausea with a vengeance. Retching at the petrol station today...god, the smell!

And the bloating! Don't remember it being this bad before. Been googling the solution -drink lots of fluid and exercise. Two things I really don't feel like doing.

Also been reading a bit about what to expect as a geriatric mum to be (over 40), wondering if there is a difference between geriatric first time mum and having a 2nd or 3rd, in terms of the protocols etc at the hospital?

BertieBotts · 31/12/2017 22:04

Doh sorry, I didn't see the new page.

@Rainbowbright17
Can you add me too please?

peterpanwendy · 31/12/2017 23:17

Thank you @StrawberryLemonade I didn't think so but any little niggle is worrying me. I've had a big drink of water and feeling better so hoping it was just that. I had a bit of a google and had a look on some forums and apparently all these cramps/squeezes/niggles are perfectly normal. TBH most of them are probably wind 😂

Convinced the fam I have a really upset tummy which is why I'm not drinking.. in reality I am totally constipated and can't stop weeing! Seems to have worked!

peterpanwendy · 01/01/2018 00:29

We're having our babies this year!!! 😍

misshannah · 01/01/2018 08:54

Can you add me too please due 26/08/18 it's my first DC and I'm 6+1 today.

No sickness yet but have had nausea on and off, Metalic taste Intermittently, sore boobs, major bloating, mood swings and awful wind at night 😳

Not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow and going to be very difficult to keep secret as non of my clothes are fitting right already! Bought a few maternity prices but feel it's just too early to wear them!

CumbrianExile · 01/01/2018 09:00

Happy new year ladies! ThanksCake

misshannah · 01/01/2018 09:01

Btw all I found this which might be useful in helping you choose which hospital - www.which.co.uk/birth-choice/where-to-give-birth

I have the choice of 3, I'm not happy with the one I've chosen only because of the city it's in, it's also the furthest from Work which will make life complicated but nearest my home. But otherwise it's the best as it has all essentials I am looking for.

Emmasmum2013 · 01/01/2018 09:09

Happy new year ladies!!!! Hope you all had a good night, it’s actually quite to start the new year hangover free! :) I’m up and playing Lego with DD at the moment. Just wish this morning sickness would go away! Not been sick (wasn’t last time either) but the constant nausea is really annoying.

Emmasmum2013 · 01/01/2018 09:11

Quite nice*

CumbrianExile · 01/01/2018 09:46

Emmasmum had hoped the lack of hangover would be nice, but I think the nausea is worse than any hangover Grin

Emmasmum2013 · 01/01/2018 09:51

That’s true Cumbrian! Grin
At least it’s not all day though. Want to get a good look at the sales later on!!

amzq87 · 01/01/2018 10:32

With you on this one @CumbrianExile - my MS is alllllll day at the mo and had a bad one yesterday with it but so far today, I'm keeping my breakfast down so win win!

Happy 2018 everyone!! As @peterpanwendy says, we can all now say our babies are due this year!! X

pestov · 01/01/2018 10:57

Happy New Year everyone! Still suffering from mostly gut issues: bloating, wind, constipation, nausea and more wind! We didn't tell anyone we were expecting last time until after the 12w scan. I'm only 6+3 but DH is tempted to tell his Mum tonight. MIL lives in another country and is recovering from cancer so he wants to give her some good news but is worried it's bad luck

gkeen369 · 01/01/2018 11:08

To those that have had their booking appointments already- do you know the criteria for consultant vs midwife led care? I'm eager to be midwife led in the birth centre as I was with DD but this time I'll be 35 and a great deal more overweight than last time and it's worrying me that I may not get what I'd like 🙈

gkeen369 · 01/01/2018 11:09

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all btw!!!xx
