boxes I have not cracked yet but in Brum it's around 50/60 for a gender scan. I have not caved yet I was desperate to know (still am) on my 20 week scan but I have to go back in a couple weeks so they can do the rest of the tests. Baby wasn't co-operating and hid from the sonographer!

If I can't find out then I'll go for a private one.

mummabubs · 21/05/2017 21:26

I feel the same 88Claire and had also heard the same re: 2 drinks a week and why the NHS sticks to none. I've had a couple of spritzers (all in the second trimester, I was too cautious in the first!) and will definitely be having a glass of champagne at my dad's 60th next weekend. To be honest I've actually gone off the taste of wine during most of pregnancy so far which has made it much easier!

ThatGirl82 · 21/05/2017 21:41

Lovely news about all the baby boys, and girl! We aren't finding out but it is tempting, especially reading how exciting it is on here.

I have had the occasional very small glass of wine when out for dinner but mostly been drinking alcohol free beer, of which there are some decent ones! I recommend Brewdog Nanny State and Bitburger Drive. I tried an alcohol free wine and it was so disgusting I had to pour it down the sink. Already looking forward to a glass of red and some pate as soon as the baby has exited my body!

doomkittycleo · 21/05/2017 21:59

Gimble I haven't had my own drink at all except for one alcohol free one ages ago, but it was soooo gassy. I have occasionally snuck a sip of DP's beer when missing it. He took me to Majorca for a couple of days last week and I did miss a nice cold beer .

ButterflyGem · 21/05/2017 22:01

Aww those are all lovely names. I'm struggling with boys names & would like something unusual, we're not finding out but I like Sienna for a girl. I quite like Kingsley, Jared or Oakley for a boy but not too sure.

boxesoffrogs · 21/05/2017 22:06

butterfly, I am totally with you on Sienna, unfortunately I called my puppy that before this baby was even a blink on the horizon... v annoying as it's a gorgeous name!!

ButterflyGem · 21/05/2017 22:16

When I finally decide think I going to keep quiet to family & friends because people put you off don't they, we called our dog Victor lol he suits it though he's quite a big black & tan dog - New Zealand hunt away but really soft 😀 I can't wait til Tuesday just to find out if all ok then I can start buying baby things, yey. On the alcohol note I've not had any been too scared & also been drinking decaf tea. Been drinking shloer. I don't think a few would matter though people drank in the past didn't they. You can get non alcoholic kopperberg which tastes the same I once accidentally bought 6 cans a few years back sat & drank them & felt/acted a bit drunk until my husband pointed out I'd been drinking non alcoholic version lol.

Trytowin · 22/05/2017 11:52

Personally I don't drink a lot anyway ( can go months in between generally) but I do not see the harm in a glass every so often. I feel the NHS should have kept its guidance as it was rather than none because we can't trust you! My teammates at work have made it quite clear that it's the worst thing you can do but when I questioned back about there being levels i.e to them a glass of champagne at Christmas/wedding was the same as downing a bottle of vodka on the street whereas to me it's blatantly not.

Pah I'm up for discussion but enough of the society guilt tripping. So far I have had you can't dye your hair, can't have eggs, can't drink, and should you be drinking that to my can of pepsi max arghhhh. So I went through the NHS caffeine guidance with them and I could have 4/5 and not go over the 200mg. Occasionally on end of the world days I have 3 but day to day mostly 1 to 2. I don't drink tea or coffee anyway so unless I have chocolate I only have pepsi max with the 'evil' caffeine. Oh the delight to get my own back!

Trytowin · 22/05/2017 11:54

Wow sorry went on a bit of a rant there! (Can you tell it's a bad day here lol)

ButterflyGem · 22/05/2017 13:50

@Trytowin Lol I can't not have my highlights done so I'll be breaking that rule. I don't think it matters everything in moderation.
I've just been to remind my boss about scan at 9am tomorrow & she said I haven't told her at all! I think I have though as i knew about it in April, she must have just forgot or is being awkward, so I don't think she too pleased especially as someone is already off on hol in our department. 😁 Oh well, I gave her my next 2 midwife appointments while I was in her office they're not until June though.

Rayna37 · 22/05/2017 14:37

So after no sickness at all I threw my breakfast up this morning and have felt queasy all day! Ridiculous to start that at 20 weeks Confused

Scan tomorrow! Not finding out pink or blue, though just told a friend would love to know brown or ginger, can they do that?! Smile

I've had the odd drink too after the first trimester (and a few occasional halves before the BFP), generally a small glass of red wine or half of beer a fortnight, very occasionally twice in one week. I'm liking the non alcohol beer too: I don't mind sparkling water with a meal but on a rare whole night out in the pub the alcohol free beer has been a revelation and so much better for you than juice or fizzy drinks, even the diet ones. I'll definitely carry on having that when I'm driving.

mummabubs · 22/05/2017 15:15

@Trytowin You definitely can dye your hair!! I've had comments on this as I've dyed my hair and every time someone 'helpfully' offers me the advice that it's not safe in pregnancy I direct them to the NHS FAQ page online that clearly states it's very unlikely to be harmful due to the tiny amount of chemicals present in home dye kits compared to the amount that would be needed to border harmful. Anyone else noticing the further along they get the more people seem to offer unrequested advice about anything and everything?! 😂

Trytowin · 22/05/2017 15:25

Yes! Deffo.

I am happy to dye my hair, have not got to it yet as suffering terrible dry skin on face. Soon as I can get that to clear up I will. Curious how it will take though cos apparently the colour can change/ take differently due to hormones. Was going to go purple again but it fades horribly (it's a light reddy brown atm where it was purple) so may play safe and go for dark brown, my hair is mousy so any colour is good really! Just irritating when you have researched etc just to get the teeth sucking judgement.

Cath1212 · 22/05/2017 15:30

Haven't posted for a while but have been following everyone's lovely updates! We moved house 4 weeks ago so trying to get sorted - haven't purchased anything baby related yet!

I dyed my hair at the weekend - had it cut last week and my hairdresser was really reassuring. Plus I couldn't take the roots any longer - I still felt guilty though. Also had a small glass of red wine - it was lovely - I miss it!

Cath1212 · 22/05/2017 15:31

and yes - lovely how everyone chips in with advice!
Was told I couldn't eat smoked salmon - I thought we could?

Rayna37 · 22/05/2017 17:01

Cath yes why is everyone so obsessed with seafood? Loads of people keep telling me I can't have prawns when as far as I can tell that's never been banned!

GimbleInTheWabe · 22/05/2017 19:39

Apologies if my post seemed a bit 'judgey' about drinking as that wasn't my intention! I don't think there's anything wrong with a few drinks in moderation at all, we all know what's right for our own bodies. As I say I rarely drank before so it wasn't a big change to my routine to cut it completely. I hate all the scaremongering too and have had people say 'are you sure you can eat that? That's not allowed is it?!' as I have eaten some cured meats and have my eggs runny.
I was more just shocked that this girl is smoking drugs every day and doesn't think it will harm her baby, although I guess it's none of my business anyway.

I'm 21 weeks today, these weeks are just flying by!

Anyone else not bought any baby stuff yet?! We don't have anything at all, not even a baby grow! Is anyone else having a baby shower?

mummabubs · 22/05/2017 19:41

Cath, we can indeed! I was also sold this myth by advice givers so I avoided it for 16 weeks- it's even on the NHS website as being safe to eat!!!! (Obviously it counts as one of the two recommended portions of oily fish a week but other than that it's fine!) I've been having it as a treat when I need a pick me up, nom nom nom.

And Try - my hair definitely goes darker since being pregnant, but equally it fades quicker too so not sure if yours would be similar? Enjoy your dye when you get round to it! 😉

greentreeseverywhere · 22/05/2017 19:41

I have brought all the clothes for the first few weeks months (in the sales and second hand) and a sleepy head. that's it! we are pram shopping next month and that's as far as iv got....feel very unprepared!!!!

mummabubs · 22/05/2017 19:43

I didn't think your post sounded judgy at all Gimble! And to be honest you're bang on with the weed reaction- my ex was completely hooked on cannabis and I work within mental health services so have no doubt in my mind that it can be harmful even if you're not pregnant. Add smoking in as the method of intake and it's definitely not a smart move!! :/

ButterflyGem · 22/05/2017 20:07

Yeh I mean the odd drink her & there can't do much but say drinking every day & smoking weed must do some harm. I haven't bought anything yet either I have a pack of white babygrows a lady at work gave me after the 1st scan though. I've been so scared after having miscarriage last year though. After tomorrow I'll start getting prepared & start all the exciting stuff. I was going to tell my boss when I'm planning on finishing work tomorrow/wed as she's desperate to know & keeps asking me. I was thinking maybe 25 August, only because it's my husbands birthday on 28th & can't usually have that off as our year end & because I travel 40 miles a day also will have holidays to take before maternity starts. It may be a bit early but at least I can get prepared & relax a bit before the birth.

pollybythesea · 22/05/2017 23:00

Hey gimble didn't sound judgey! I've bought a few babygros (random sizes, whenever I see something I like at the mo - might have to get more organised soon!) and an Ergo Baby Adapt carrier as I wanted to try one on before I got too big to check it fitted properly.

Cath1212 · 23/05/2017 10:24

Right, back to the smoked salmon for me! It is about the only oily fish I can stomach at the moment
My 20 week scan is next week - then I really think it is time to start buying things, I feel very unprepared at the moment!

CadburySpot · 23/05/2017 13:27

can i join you lovely ladies,
I am 17weeks with baby number 4, due date 28th Oct. This will make us a five child household as our niece lives with us too. My sister is also pregnant but she is having her first and is due a week before me. Our lifestyle choices are worlds apart and it is interesting to see how different our pregnancies are and the decisions we make. She is definitely more cautious than I am.

ButterflyGem · 23/05/2017 14:34

We had 20 week scan this morning & all ok with baby, I'll start to buy bits now. Only thing is they said my placenta is quite close to birth canal so they going to do another scan at 36 weeks. Hopefully by then it will have moved as my bump grows she said not to worry so I'll try not to x
