I have a simple rule during pregnancy - if the baby was on the outside would I feed it what I'm thinking of doing - would I feed it junk food, alcohol, Coca Cola, cigarettes, would I put whatever body lotion I'm about to put on on the baby, would I paint it's nails, would I dye it's hair, would I give it this cold remedy or pain killer. If I wouldn't then I don't do it now. The placenta is not actually a great filter, if you drink alcohol & eat crap it does make it through the placenta to the baby, you can absorb chemicals transdermally especially lotions and creams designed to absorb into your skin and I just figure anything getting into me can get to the baby and I just imagine at this early stage all his little cells and systems just developing for the first time which are supposed to last his whole life and little growing eyes being built on alcohol, chemical loaded body lotions and hair dyes and nail varnish, toxic fizzy drinks and kebabs and it scares the crap out of me so I go super paranoid with everything and avoid it all to be honest. I'm sure I don't need to and it would be fine but after 5 years infertility and 4 mcs and an 8 year gap between DD and this one I'm not chancing anything.

I'm up at my mum's for a week and my aunts and uncle's and cousins are coming for dinner this week when I'll be announcing it to them. My cousin is due her first in a couple of weeks and she's popping over in an hour or so, I think she'll notice straight away!

I'm booking in for a scan this or next week. I'm sure everything is fine as I already found the heartbeat on the doppler but can't wait another month till the nhs one.

8+1

AlpacaYourThings · 23/03/2014 10:07

MrsWombat please don't worry about an internal scan. Like Northern said they are ok. I had one a few years ago (not pregnancy related) it was a bit weird but not painful. Smile

amylou85 · 23/03/2014 10:09

Eeeeeeek! Got my BFP yesterday! Due around November 25th. ON CLOUD 9! But also terrified, I want to be at 12 weeks now! Only 4 months 4 days. It's my first so don't know what to do with myself! COngratulations to all he BFP's!!!!!!!

RandomInternetStranger · 23/03/2014 10:10

An internal scan is fine, not nearly as bad as a smear and worth it to see the baby.

Moffit · 23/03/2014 10:21

Congratulations Amylou! The early days are very exciting!

I feel as nervous as hell, this is my second and I thought I'd be much more laid back, but I'm a bag of nerves, not sure if it's because I have no real symptoms, but my stomach feels all knotty, think I need to clam down, any advice anyone?

Since reading all of your posts, I have been thinking of an early scan to put my mind at rest, found somewhere quite local at a reasonable price, but think I'm too early to even call them at the moment, going by LMP I'll be 5 weeks tomorrow, maybe when I get to 6 weeks i'll make a call and book one in, for 8-10 weeks.

We weren't planning on telling anyone until the 12 week scan, is anyone else waiting until then?

amy83firsttimer · 23/03/2014 10:26

And me! 6+2 and anxious but excited. Live in south Manchester and this is 1st. Sore / huge boobies! Have felt sick but not thrown up. Off to buy bigger / more supportive bras in a minute!

PosyFossilsShoes · 23/03/2014 10:28

Moffit we're waiting to tell most people until the 12 week scan, but because of logistics as we went abroad for IUI, a few select people know already - my parents, BFF and two very close friends who had a surprise baby last year.

Fortunately my colleagues are assuming the nausea in the mornings is a hangover. I'm going to get a right reputation at this rate. Hmm

PosyFossilsShoes · 23/03/2014 10:33

And the morning sickness is a nightmare!! I only have a 30 minute commute but I'm seriously thinking of cycling in (12 miles with lever arch files… don't know which is worse) as the travel sickness is awful and I'm really worried I'll puke on the tube. I've already had to get off a couple of times to compose myself on the platform. I've been sick at work too which has to count as one of my less good career moments.

I now finally know what rich tea biscuits are for though. They're the only thing I can eat in the mornings. Alita I'm impressed you were able to go into McD's… i'm finding just walking past them quite hard at the moment, I don't usually eat McDs but when this nausea finally goes I might go in and eat one just because I can!!

Nessalina · 23/03/2014 10:41

Morning all! Welcome and congrats to the new ladies! Grin

posy it seems food like that is all I want! I'm obviously forcing healthy food down me, but it's carbs and junk that my body wants?! I've gone off fruit and veg which I normally absolutely love!

people asking about internal scans, they're not too bad, you soon forget when you see your baby on the screen... I found it a bit uncomfortable as my lady bits are a bit sensitive since getting pg though like someone else said the internal exam I had with swabs and a weird plastic device to see the cervix after was much more unpleasant!

PosyFossilsShoes · 23/03/2014 10:54

I've gone off veg too which is REALLY weird for me. I usually eat lots of raw veg as well as cooked veg at meals - but looked at the veg in the shop yesterday and just thought - urgh.

If it's junk your body needs though Alita then go for it - one of my ex-colleagues, previously a veggie, craved KFC throughout pregnancy and now has a lovely toddler to show for it. She reckons her previous non-junk obsession had left her deficient in normal junk levels ;)

Also agree with others that internal scans are fine. I had a few to check my ovaries were working and to count and measure follicles, and not a problem. Although the blue lube they use on the end of the Giant Dildo Probe of Doom does make it look like a light sabre, which had me & DP going "vvvmmm, vvvvvmmmmm" in a Star Wars fashion and giggling, which is apparently not the approved way to conduct oneself when a doctor is up to the wrist in you.

AlpacaYourThings · 23/03/2014 10:57

PosyFossils Grin Grin

I just thought it was a bit weird when she put a condom in the end and then put lube on it. Seemed very kinky for an NHS procedure.

blamber · 23/03/2014 11:19

Posy, that's hilarious! It does look like a Weird thing, but I was too nervous to make any jokes. Turns out, it wasn't painful at all. I hope your ms will ease off a bit. I'm starting a new job soon with lots of travelling on bus and metro. I get Travel sick at times so I'm wondering what I'll feel like once the ms kicks in! Fingers crossed it won't be too bad.

It's funny what some are saying, where you get really fed up with a symptom but as soon as it goes you get worried and want it back. My bad heartburn disappeared through the night. I m now resisting the urge to do another pregnancy test!

Nessalina · 23/03/2014 11:32

I just had to get my DH to pull the car over on the way back from our weekend away so that I could vom delicately in a layby Grin
I'm well classy me.

well I feel nauseous again thank god :p it's not as bad as it has been but still :) I guess I need to quit worrying x)

AlpacaYourThings · 23/03/2014 12:23

I haven't really had any nausea. I should be grateful as I get quite hysterical upset when I'm sick. However, it's making me worry.

amylou85 · 23/03/2014 12:32

I meant I'm 4 weeks not 4 months sorry!

amylou85 · 23/03/2014 12:35

I really don't want the nausea, had none so far and hope it stays away. when did you guys start getting it? As i'm 4weeks4days could it turn up next week? Hope not coz it's a very important week work wise!!!

Catnap1 · 23/03/2014 12:53

I haven't been nauseous at all and I'm 7+1. I am very tired though and my boobs are massive! Smile When will they stop expanding?!!

mxmumof3 · 23/03/2014 12:57

Hello everyone. I'm 7 weeks, 1 day. I live in Australia and had a scan this week, unfortunately too early to see a heartbeat but they did see 2 sacs so going back to rescan in two weeks to confirm twins and hopefully see heartbeats. Hope I don't need too many scans as I have to pay for them over here. This will be my forth pregnancy, I have three kids already. Starting to get morning sickness but main symptoms are being thirsty and going for a pee all the time. Glad I'm carrying through winter especially if its twins!!!Wink

Polkadotscarf · 23/03/2014 12:59

Managed to find some suitable underwear in debenhams yesterday but it is decidedly ugly and oh so practical and I do hate to admit it is also oh so comfy! If anyone discovers pretty yet big and not wired bras in up to a g cup let me know!

Polkadotscarf · 23/03/2014 13:00

nessalina I seem to be getting evening sickness too!

PosyFossilsShoes · 23/03/2014 13:07

Polka try Bravissimo?

AlpacaYourThings · 23/03/2014 13:09

Catnap1 I've gone up at least one cup size and I'm only 5 weeks!

mxmum twins? How exciting! Smile

Annarose2014 · 23/03/2014 14:28

I got nausea bang on the 6 weeks mark. Prior to that it was just the boobs and tiredness.

This morning I told my DH of how overwhelming it was and how it might be better after a scan as I could get a sense of baby rather than this not-very-maternal whinginess. But that since I probably wasn't going to get a scan till perhaps 16 weeks I would have to just get through this horrible part somehow.

And bless his little cotton socks, he instantly suggested a private scan "whatever it costs". So I'm going to look into it now, even if we have to travel a good distance to get one.

I'll prob wait till my antenatal appt at 10 weeks just in case they suprise me with a (free!) scan there and then - and I'm 8 wks tomorrow so can last that long.

But feel v relieved we have a back up plan & won't have to wait another 2 months!!!
