Morning all! Smile
Northern - you always count dates as 40 weeks from LMP or 38 weeks from known date of conception. So either way you're 5 weeks!
The NHS usually count 40 weeks from LMP as it gives the best estimate of due date. That's because even if you only shagged on one day, conception may not take place until up to 10 days after that (sperm live a while!), so it's not always the best method of predicting how far on you are.
If you know when you ovulated, then that's a more sure dating method as the egg only lives an average of 24hrs after ovulation, but again it's very hard to be sure exactly when you ovulate. You may think you know, but OPKs aren't that accurate, and that twinge in your side could have been last night's curry!
So because everyone usually knows when their last period was, they date 40 weeks from there. And then coz 38 weeks is the actual average time of baby gestation, you end up due on average 9 months on from when sperm really met egg.

Lol, sorry, essay Blush You can tell we've been TTC for a while!

Northern, you count from lmp, so you're five weeks. Not everyone gets symptoms that early on. I think often it starts at 6 weeks.

I just don't see how those Chinese calendars work. I had a look and according to the calendar everyone with the same age and same month of conception have babies of the same gender! Ah well, at least they're 50% accurate Smile

Had such a nice curry last night, and then got terrible heartburn through the night. Fun fact, I read in a pregnancy book that studies have shown that if you have lots of heartburn throughout your pregnancy, your baby will be born with loads of hair! Apparently the same hormones cause both. In the meantime, no more curries for me Sad

Glossolalia · 22/03/2014 09:47

Can I ask what the 5+x means? Is that for example, 5+6= 5w6d?

Northernexile · 22/03/2014 09:47

Thank you for explaining! I can't believe how much I have managed to forget about pregnancy in two years! Feel like a complete novice. I didn't have much in the way of symptoms last time either, no sickness at all, so fingers crossed this one goes the same way. Although symptoms are reassuring too I suppose. On the theme of gender, DC2 will be a surprise, as was DD.

Northernexile · 22/03/2014 09:48

No heartburn with DD by the way blamber, but she had tons of hair!

Sleepingstarsmommy · 22/03/2014 10:06

Morning all.

Just used the Chinese prediction thing and it was right about my angel being a boy and predicts Im having a girl this time. Guess time will tell.

blamber · 22/03/2014 10:18

Gloss, you're correct!

Northern, there are always exceptions to the rule Grin

barmybunting · 22/03/2014 10:35

Morning everyone! Lovely sunshine here today and it's Saturday, thank god! I am counting down to the end of term now.

One thing I would add for those of you asking about due dates, is that LMP will give a good estimate but can be quite far out if you have long cycles. My cycles are generally about 40+ days, so my LMP would place me due about 12 days before rough date of conception would. So LMP would mean I would be 7+6 today, whereas I think I'm 5+6 today. EPU have taken my word for my late ovulation date to only do early scan next week to be on the safe side so I'll see what that shows.

Nessalina · 22/03/2014 10:39

Very true. And we can take it all with a large pinch of salt anyway coz only about 5% of babies are born on their due date! Grin

Polkadotscarf · 22/03/2014 11:14

Had my scan yesterday and that and all other tests have been positive, saw a heart beat and everything! They have just said it's unexplained bleeding. Feeling more reassured now. Off to buy some new bras and hoping I can find some in my new size!
I'm in Wiltshire, this is our first and I'm 32 x

PosyFossilsShoes · 22/03/2014 11:30

Checking in on the new thread. Greenstone - in answer to your q off the last thread, there weren't really any arguments about donor choosing, as we went abroad (we can't get NHS treatment in our area) and we could select height, eye colour and hair colour. We nominated the same eye and hair colour as DP, and she selected height (although I wouldn't let her select one that's TOO short!)

When we were looking at doing it in London we did look at the known donors, where you get loads of information, and that was really weird. Like a dating site for sperm!

Public service announcement, though, we wouldn't be able to have a child if it weren't for other people's generosity with their jizz so if your DP / DH has ever expressed an interest and it wouldn't freak you out, do encourage them to donate. Once we've had our baby I'm probably going to donate eggs to keep the circle turning. :)

Posy, 32, DC1, 6+5 according to me, 6+1 according to GP (but I know when I was inseminated and he was going from LMP)

pinkgirlythoughts · 22/03/2014 13:16

Barmy, just out of nosiness, where in Lincs are you?

Northernexile · 22/03/2014 14:14

Hi likeaboss, congratulations! You have the same date as me, thought expect I'll still be waiting come December!

blamber · 22/03/2014 14:52

Likeaboss, my due date is the 24th and I'm also prone to worrying. First about being able to conceive and now about the pregnancy! Time's going so slowly, I hate how these first weeks so much could go wrong. But I try not to stress too much - for the baby's sake! It's not easy though, especially when I wake up in the night it's difficult to fall back asleep. The heartburn last night didn't help either.

like a boss don't worry you can have 1 drink a week anyway if you really want to... and it was so early it wouldn't have had any effect baby would have just been burrowing in :)

Northernexile · 22/03/2014 15:17

Don't worry about the drink, think about 90% of people must have had a few too many at some stage before they found out. I was at a wedding this time last week, before I knew I was upduffed, and I took a rare chance to let my hair down without DD. Will be the last opportunity for a good year or so now so I'm glad I enjoyed it!

Nessalina · 22/03/2014 16:37

Welcome likeaboss! Grin
Well, the Chinese predictor reckons I'm having a girl! Smile I tried it with my friends baby, and with the baby we lost, and it got the gender right on both, so it seems a bit spookily accurate... Shock

Sleepyhoglet · 22/03/2014 17:01

I'm due same as blamber I think, around 24th nov. First baby/first pregnancy

maeanne · 22/03/2014 17:08

Thanks for the explanation sleepingstars.

How are we all feeling today? I'm exhausted and incredibly irritable - just two of many symptoms. I'm not even 5 weeks yet!

Sleepingstarsmommy · 22/03/2014 17:15

Well today has been interesting. Had a call from a midwife at 2.20pm to come straight up the hospital for my booking in as my consultant wants to see me early and so they need my paperwork sorted. Been and done my paperwork, bloods done, reassurance given and now just need to wait for consultant appointment that should be in the next couple of weeks. I'm only 4+2 today so can't grumble at that!!

BJZebra · 22/03/2014 17:22

Hi, query on hair dye?
My roots where in need of being done anyway but now I won't be getting them done for a while - so have lots of grey roots coming through.
What are you thoughts in dying hair? Last time I had a semi-permanent done 2 times I think both way after the first trimester. 2nd one was 1 week before birth - last chance for a while.
I wouldn't do it in the 1st 3 months but it is acceptable to do so after? Am I overly cautious or risk taking and vain?

alita7 · 22/03/2014 17:33

apparently it's Ok the whole time but I'm not a 100% convinced.
