1Catherine1 · 12/01/2011 23:49

Cot Vs Cotbed - I have bought a cotbed rather than a cot because it will last longer. I am planning on having another child at some point but I don't want to decide on when as I want to have the finances to do it next time (can't really afford it this time around but it is the right time for me and OH). I think financially it makes more sense. My DD will use it up till 5 years at max when she'll need a new bed anyway and I think that will be the latest I'll put off DC2 till. If we have another baby before we can always buy another cot, cotbed or toddler bed for DD1. If I'd gone for the cot then I'd be looking at buying another bed in a year or so and then storing it for DC2 which I don't really have the room to do. I have got a crib though to start DD off in so she can have a cosy bed just incase she doesn't settle well in a cotbed with all that spare room.

Anyway... must do some work, been feeling a little unwell tonight. Think exhaustion and stress have been getting to me. We have someone lined up to interview for my job on Friday so hopefully I'll at least have some peace of mind that my pupils will be looked after by a maths teacher rather than someone who has no mathematical understanding or interest while I'm away.

jeffily · 13/01/2011 06:59

Hope you are feeling better today catherine, though in many ways teaching is a pregnancy/child friendly job there is a lot of pressure and stress about. Hope you get a good cover- I am lucky that my job share is going full time to cover my ML. Also, not planning to go back so trying to discretely remove all my junk from school pre-leaving!

Been awake since 5.30 cos of a dream in which DH got ill and went off on his own and wouldn't tell me what was wrong. Woke him at 6.15 in the end to tell him off! Not impressed!

Right, off to school!

Oceanbreeze · 13/01/2011 07:59

Good morning ladies.

Can't believe how fast this thread moves - think a separate thread for stats would be very useful once the babies start coming, or it'll be unreadable Smile

Hope you feel better today Catherine, and that your bp improves Gem

Glad good news for you this week Purple I also had to have a GTT this week - don't know the results yet. Have fingers crossed though.

Sorry about your sisterly stress Sam More hassle than you feel like dealing with atm I'm sure.

I've recorded OBEM - but all this talk of the screamy woman has put me & DP off watching it so far!

No idea about my weight. I was weighed at booking in, and the following appointment - but no idea what it was then, and no idea what it is now. Ignorance is bliss Grin

Had my 30 week checkup yesterday - and all was fine. Bp a little high, but only on the first 2 attempts Wink Managed to get a prescription for something to help with the heartburn, so hopefully will be able to get more rest now.

Had a bit of a panic yesterday evening - had cramps. Felt like bad period pain. Lasted a few hours, which seemed like an eternity, but eventually buggered off following a warm bath & a paracetamol. Bump feels very tight now, but I'm a bit more relaxed. Such a relief when it stopped!

Anyway sorry for mammoth post, have a good day all Smile

spaceal · 13/01/2011 10:18

Morning all. Had a rubbish night sleep too, mostly as a result of horribly aching hips, despite well-placed pillows. The little one was moving a lot too, but not so much that it feels like she's moving head down Hmm

We're going for a moses basket first and then a cotbed - a friend is passing one on and it just happens to be the one we'd decided we liked anyway. We'll definitely have the moses basket in with us, and probably the cotbed for a few months too. Anyone else got ideas about how long, if at all, you'll have the little one in your room?

StrangewaysHereICome · 13/01/2011 11:46

Hello all, goodness it is hard to keep up with everyone - I can feel all the excitment building!!

I had a very Blush experience yesterday! I took my dd's swimming and my maternity cossie is starting to get a bit worn. I popped to the loo and was so shocked to see my now very dark nipples were extremly visible Blush Blush. I got in the pool quick I can tell you.

spaceal I am the same at night with aching hips despite mountains of pillows. Does anyone know why you are meant to sleep on your left? I start off there but have to change position lots as various bits start aching. My baby is breech too so I am keen to stay on my side to help it move but it just gets too painful!

As for cots, we just have a cot which dd1 stayed in til 18 months and then went straight to a single bed with bed guard when her sister needed it! It worked for us but we had the single bed already so it made sense. There is much excitement now as dd's are having bunk beds this weekend so we can sort out the nursery Grin.

sam I feel for you, the nesting feeling is strong and I know how it feels to just want to get things sorted. I am a bit frustrated with DH as there is loads I was to get done but can't as I daren't go in the loft - he is saying there is no hurry! Still I have bought some nappies and baby bits today to calm me down Wink.

It is dd2's first full day at nursery today which feels wierd, but I might just treat myself to a nap after lunch Smile

Take care all.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 13/01/2011 12:54

Hello all.

Well first - cot vs cotbed. We did cotbed for both DS1 and DS2 and both are still using them (5 and 3 now) so we really got our moneys worth. DS1 is getting his own room so will have the standard single we have in there and we will save his cotbed frame or DS2's for the baby - hence we have a cot for the LO. If this is your first I definitely recommend the cotbed.

We plan on having baby in with us until about Sept - mostly because of the fact that we are going to Turkey in the summer and although the baby could go in with his brothers (family house) the baby will probably stay with us and I thought it best to leave moving everyone at home until we got back.... LO will go in with DS2 who will be the big bro in the room by then.

Going swimming tonight with DS2 whilst DS1 has a lesson, although have no idea if any of my swimming costumes maternity or otherwise will actually fit and to be honest my bits could do with a bit of a clean up and I cant actually see them Blush and we are going with a mum friend from school. Eek.

Good to see most are doing well. Sorry about the BP issues.

I had incredible heartburn last night where I actually woke up thinking I had saliva/vomitted in my mouth.... then i couldnt actually get up as my body had frozen.

anyway - enjoy the rest of the day ladies and take it easy.

me23 · 13/01/2011 13:27

We have bought a cot (cheap in the mothercare sale) a cot bed is too big for our room as baby will have to sleep in our room until we can move to a bigger house, dd's room will only fit her bed.
Even if we did have the space I would be keeping baby in our room for the reccommended 6 months as per the guidelines to help prevent SIDS.

The reason pregnant women are advised to sleep on their left side is because sleeping on your back can compress your inferior vena cava a major vein which returns blood flow from lower limbs to the heart, when compressed it can impede maximum blood flow to the baby and you which can leave you feeling faint, obviously during the night you will twist and turn I wouldn't worry about it and right or left is preferable to flat on your back.
We will need a new thread very soon!

Medee · 13/01/2011 13:44

Guidelines say first 6 months, I think Space, but a lot of it will depend on how things go, how the night-feeds are, and how we configure the second room, or if we move. But 6 months minimum anyway.

1Catherine1 · 13/01/2011 14:01

Since there was talk of culling the list of people that for whatever reason don't come by anymore I had a look (with the help of Cntl-F) for those people who have not posted in the last month. Those that have I've marked with >> and everyone else hasn't. There were a few people though that had posted more than once in the last month but were not on the list - naughty people! Get your names down :) If I have mistakenly missed your name it's all Words fault and not mine Grin. I noticed how close we were to the end of the thread and thought if we want to start the final thread with a correct and up to date list and the stats thread (?) then maybe we should start now? Anyway... that's my lunch break gone Shock I didn't think it would take that long.

hello lovely ladies! Sorry for dropping off the radar for so long. Wonderful to read Purple and Split are doing well.

strange the idea of sleeping on your left is because your major arteries (or soemthing important) are on your right and you could constrict these by sleeping on your right side and indeed your back. I asked my osteopath about this and he said it was basically crap, and the most important thing is to sleep comfortably and alternating sides to give the body equal rest! I still end up on my back from time to time, and again am not worried unless it starts to result in diziness etc.

Is everyone getting crazy movements now? Every now and again a stray foot tries to make a bid for freedom which feels really very strange!

I too have had hip/groin pain. Had some fab treatment and have escaped the seriousness of SPD thank god. Some good tips were to keep a pillow between legs when sleeping on side...keep legs together when getting in and out of bed/car/chair...not to sit on too slouchy a sofa. The pain is far worse at bedtime than any other time and getting up for the loo is such a hassle! So i totally sympathise with you girls going through the same.

I finish work next Weds...so get just about 6 weeks at home before baba arrives. Hopefully enough time to find her a name!!!

the return of OBEM has been a treat. I'm really keen to see the next episode as I too am planning on using the birthing pool at my hospital.

I've gone for a cot that expands into a bed made by Stokke. Starts as a tiny round crib, then a cot, then you get a final insert for a bed. Works perfectly in our room as a crib, then in nursery as a cot, then can move to one of the spare rooms when it needs turning into a bed, although I cant picture having a baby yet, let alone a child who needs a whole bed!!!

I hope you're all well and relaxing lots

Medee · 13/01/2011 14:33

welcome back, Coraltoes.

KPidgeon · 13/01/2011 14:58

Bluebeach and Halo - so good to hear others have put on weight. I'm sure it must all be water :o and we'll lose it very quickly afterwards. I definitely vote no more weighing scales checking. What's the point?!

PettyPrudenc 1 1/2 stone does not sound like much to me!

& Blue your job sounds lovely.

Gem sorry to hear about your blood pressure. It's easy to overdo things isn't it. Especially when you're in full-on nesting mode!

Sleep is tough at the moment. Anyone else boiling hot?! I'm roasting in work.

My lovely husband bought me a new mums pack from Argos- including a triangular cushion. Hope that will work a bit tonight around the bump as I fall asleep on my left side and am now waking up a lot on my back. Not good!

Take care all.. nearly the weekend!

KPidgeon · 13/01/2011 15:03

Ohh. and also today I've had to show round my potential maternity cover applicants.. very odd. My boss was very impressed with how articulate and experienced one of them is. I want my job to be in good hands but I don't want them to be that good!

Oceanbreeze · 13/01/2011 16:59

Following my GTT the hospital have called me back to attend a clinic Sad

sittinghippo · 13/01/2011 19:14

Hello ladies.

Oh Ocean sorry to hear that, when is the clinic? Fingers crossed for you.

Pah, I'm pretty sure I've put on at least 2 and a half stone, maybe more, too scared to actually look, but I'm blaming it on the fact that I was on Weight watchers when I fell pregnant, so all my 'lost weight' went straight back on so doesnt count as weight gain... Hmm cos that way I have probably only put on a stone...

Popped on to tell you that I had my consultant appointment at the hospital yesterday and it was good news! Baby is (currently) head down, so am praying and praying it doesnt turn breech as it will mean I can try for a vaginal delivery this time, instead of it being automatic CS.
Have to go back at 36 weeks to confirm head down position then he has said there will be no reason not to try for a VBAC. Hard to describe but I am over the moon at the news and really looking forward to feeling my first contraction, so I can have full membership to the mummy club Grin

chickiewoo · 13/01/2011 19:50

Hi all - good to hear all your news. We had a cot for DS who went into a single bed aged 2 and will be doing the same for this one. Will be using moses basket for first few months in our room anyway.

I'm 29 weeks and have put on 2 stone which I feel slightly shocked at when others have only gained a few pounds or a stone at most. Some people comment on how big I look and 'am I sure there is only one in there?' and others just say what a neat bump (perhaps they are being kind!) - anyway, I'm trying not to stress too much and will work hard during the summer months with lots of walking to get the pounds off.

Been sorting through all our baby stuff from 5 years ago and joy of joy everything has survived storage in our loft and I can't believe how much bedding and first size, 0-3 and 3-6 neutral colour vests, babygros etc. I already have - now going through the mammoth task of washing and drying it all. Bottom line is I only need to buy some new muslins, bottles and a few odds and ends to get started again.

Can anyone give advice on Strep B? Didn't really know much about it until a pregnant friend mentioned it today and said she was getting tested for it (from 35 weeks onwards) as she tested positive on her first pregnancy. As far as I can tell the test isn't usually offered. Any info anyone? Sorry my post is so long xxx

JoJoB77 · 13/01/2011 20:33

Hi ladies

Re cot/cot bed, we have bought a cot bed which just about squeezes in the nursery but thought it a good investment for when baby grows etc. Baby will be in our room in a moses basket for a good few months anyway.

Chickiewoo I have tested positive for Strep B. For some reason they tested my urine when my first bloods were taken. My GP has said he will swab me at 36 weeks to see if it is present, however my midwife has said as it's in my urine it will always be there so I'm resigned to going to the nearest hospital as opposed to the even closer MLU to have IV antibiotics whilst in labour. I was very surprised they found it so early as they didnt' say they were testing for it, tbh I hadn't even heard of it before falling pg! I have heard it varies from area to area as to whether they test or not at all.

Anyway, main thing is it's been found and can be treated.

Hope that helps x

edeluna · 13/01/2011 20:46

Thanks, 1Catherine1, for dedicating your lunch break to list management! :) If you're preparing the list for a new thread, could you please update my entry:

17/03 edeluna pg#1 It's a girl!

I'm not sure if it's really necessary to cull the list. I bet a lot of people on it are just lurkers and maybe they and the others will stop round here once they're on leave. I know I've been having a ridiculous time trying to balance life, work, pregnancy preparation, online communities, etc. But that's just my 2p; go with whatever makes your lives as the moderators easier.

Exciting things that have happened or are about to happen:

? 31 weeks today. I feel like the countdown is on for real ... though it also seems sort of like a long time to still have to wait. I'm so eager to finally meet her!

? Got the combined flu/swine flu jab plus the additional H1N1 jab earlier this week. Only side effect was a very sore arm for a few days, but it's better now.

? Got a great deal on a second-hand, barely used Bugaboo Cameleon the other day. A year ago you couldn't have convinced me that this would seem like a high point in my life, LOL.

? Got a cotbed. Beautiful gift from my in-laws. Now we just have to clear out all the boxes from the nursery so we can get it set up properly. Feel like we're still moving house even though it's been three months!

? Finishing work tomorrow! So excited about having some freedom, but my to-do list for baby prep is massive. Hoping to get through it all by early February so I really can relax for a few weeks before the baby arrives. Not sure yet how naive I'm being.

Do you all feel like you have a mountain of things to accomplish before B-day?

superpenguin · 13/01/2011 21:42

Hello everyone!
Gosh this thread is moving fast! It's hard to keep up! But rest assured I am still reading all your news. :)

I watched OBEM on 4OD last night, have to confess it made me cry in places! And no matter how alarming some of it looks I am completely fascinated by the whole thing and will definitely be watching all the other episodes!

DH and I went to our first antenatal class on Monday, this was the NHS one, just an hour and a half, and there is a part 2 next week. Talked about what to pack in hospital bags, signs of labour and the 3 stages, and saw a doll being delivered through a plastic pelvis! Next week we are on pain relief options and what happens in special cases.

I'm still going to my aqua-natal classes on Tuesday evenings too, had to buy a maternity swimming costume though as can't fit in my normal one any more and don't fancy wearing bikini there! Quite expensive but I am very pleased with it, and had an M&S voucher for xmas so it worked out ok. Here is a link to the one I bought:

Am feeling lots of movements lately too which is nice. I'm now 32+6 by the way.

Talking of bumps, everyone has been telling me that I have a big bump and look big for my dates, which was starting to get slightly annoying, as at my last midwife appointment I was measuring just on the high side of normal but still in the normal range.
However, I have had to admit today that they are right - had another midwife appointment this afternoon and I am now measuring fundal height of 36cm when I am just less than 33 weeks. Shock Looking at it plotted on the graph in my notes it looks ridiculous! Must have had a big growth spurt in the last couple of weeks I think - this is probably also why I have suddenly got quite a lot of stretch-marks, mostly around the bottom half of the bump. and am feeling generally more and more uncomfortable.
Anyway, this means they are sending me for a growth scan (booked for Tuesday morning) to find out whether I have a massive baby or whether I have excess fluid or what. Confused We will see...

Oh, cot beds - we are going to get a cot bed I think but in no hurry. I will probably look for a 2nd-hand one then buy a new mattress.

oh and meant to say I am in favour of keeping the stats list within the same thread like we've been doing, but happy to go with the majority opinion! :)

Ocean sorry I don't know what GTT means but best wishes for the clinic.

For stretch marks I recommend the body shop cocoa butter body butter, it makes your skin really soft, I used it every day last time and I definitely think it helped improve the condition of the skin on my stomach afterwards (I used it for about 2 months after DD2 was born)

Anyone got any other recommendations?

Bio oil is supposed to be good - I never remember to put it on though - am rubbish at these sort of things Blush.

Super GTT - sorry its Glucose Tolerance Test, looks like Gestational Diabetes is on the cards for me. So really not the end of the world, but just a bit of a shock - thanks to you & hippo for your best wishes though Smile

JoJo sorry to hear about the Strep B.

Re cotbeds - we've got a crib for the initial period - no way would a cot or cotbed fit in our room. So we're putting off making that decision for now!

My current dilemma - just to add more potential confusion to the thread - is the minefield that is reusable nappies.

Oceanbreeze- I've stocked up on Bamboozles Tots Bots. Got a load from ebay as they seemed to have positive reviews. So hoping they will be okay!
