Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
spaceal · 08/01/2011 13:55

Happy Saturday everyone.

Quick question to experienced mothers: what size sleepsuits/vests will we need? I'm confused by the sizes: tiny baby, newborn, 0-3 months. Is it worth getting some tiny baby ones, or will most newborns be OK in newborn? And for how long? The woman I spoke to in Mothercare suggested I'd need some tiny baby (less than 7.5lbs) but this seems very small to me (especially since neither OH nor I are small!).

Any advice gratefully received!

Muser · 08/01/2011 14:37

I'm not experienced, but I wouldn't bother with tiny baby. If you get a very small baby just ask the first visitors to pick up some sleepsuits on their way over. You can roll up the sleeves to help make the bigger ones fit.

Our NCT teacher said to get 6 sleepsuits, so I'd go for 6 newborn and 6 0-3 months. You'll be given loads more and probably buy more to avoid washing constantly. But 6 ought to be enough to start with, and then if you end up with a massive baby you haven't got dozens of tiny sleepsuits that you can never use!

We have a selection of newborn and 0-3 months. The sizes do vary hugely between brands. Some newborn seems the same size as 0-3, and some 0-3 looks tiny!

Well... We went pram shopping, he loved the Phil and Teds (I felt guilty because so far I have chosen everything), it was way too big for my boot (secret feeling of relief since I didn't like the newborn mode) so we opted for the only one that would fit in my boot which I suggested months ago but he claimed it was "a piece of metal" - the Quinny Buzz. He liked it a lot more in the shop than the pictures online, so he's happy and feels like he picked it, WIN-WIN :) We've already got the maxi cosi car seat that will fit on it as a travel system but we're going to leave the purchase of the matching carry-cot till next month - dam car tax due this month and stealing my baby money! So only a few little bits left to buy then baby shopping is all done.

Niamh, I don't count kicks every day because days like today I really don't see the point. While driving the hour to Babies 'R' Us she was kicking wholes out of me so much that I was thankful that the traffic drew to a standstill so I could undo my belt and jeans to give her a little bit more room. Was a tad embarrassing when I had to discretely do them up again when getting out of the car. On days that I'm concerned that she hasn't kicked much I do kick count though. For my LO normal movement is about 10 movements in 25 to 45 minutes. I only count movements that happen more than 5 seconds apart too, since if she stretches and I feel it in two places I decided that was one instead of two. I did kick count for a full week first though to get an idea what her average was. Note, I put "my LO" and "her average" because obviously all babies are different. My midwife asked if she was an active baby and since she had kept me up the night before kicking me my midwife decided she probably was, I think had she not been she may have asked me to kick count since there is a page for it in my pregnancy notes that says "if your doctor/midwife asks you to fill this in...", well, words to that effect.

As for the hospital bag - I'm buying the changing bag and a hospital bag (yes - its an excuse to buy myself a new bag, I've not had one in years Wink) next month so I can have it ready for 34 weeks. I still need to compile my spreadsheet list of what I put in each bag, I'm a spreadsheet addict! My whole life is in excel Blush

Muser · 08/01/2011 16:37

Buying the pram makes it feel rather real, doesn't it?

I thought the advice was not to kick count anymore? I never have, I know what times of day the baby is usually active and would worry if it wasn't active when I expected. Not that I get much chance to worry as it does love to give me a good kick in the ribs fairly regularly.

OP posts:
me23 · 08/01/2011 17:39

That's right Muser the guidence from NICE is not to kick count but as you said recognise your babies rountine and if deviation from normal or you are worried then call labour ward or DAU.

we have a leak in our kitchen ceiling bathroom is above, waiting for plumber to come out.

jeffily · 08/01/2011 20:43

Oh no Me, that sounds like a pain in the backside! Hope it gets sorted soon.

We're not buying any new baby stuff, going to make do with the second hand stuff we were given for DD. An ancient Mamas and Papas buggy and a Maxi Cosy car seat. Am v envious of new buggy purchasers would love a fancy one but no chance as the one we have will do. TBH DD barely used it anyway as I carried her everywhere instead in my ergo baby carrier (which is totally brilliant if anyone is into baby carrying BTW) or in the babasling. Am planning to do pretty much the same with the newbie.

Also not kick counting here, just being aware of the movement and would get in touch if LO deviated from the norm for him/her. Did have a quiet couple of days a week ago, but has been wriggling like mad since so no worries there! My hospital bag has been packed for weeks now as my waters broke last time at 33+2 so was in hosp from then on and was utterly unprepared so had to make do with the random selection of clothing that DH brought me in. Must have looked like a crazy lady! If this bubba follows the same pattern I have another week to go! Am keeping everything crossed that s/he stays put though as really, really want to be able to hold them straight after birth this time and not have to have the week in the SCBU.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh. One Born Every Minute is BACK! Mondays at 9pm on C4. I know where I'll be!

EvianBaby · 08/01/2011 22:50

Oooh yes, very excited for the new series of OBEM! I hope it's as good as the first series, DH and I loved it. I wasn't quite as impressed with One Born at Christmas though, not sure why.

Jeffily - thanks for the advice on baby carriers, I am looking for a good sling/carrier this time. I would like to have my hands free to look after DS so think think I will use one this time around. If anyone else has any recommendations I would be pleased to hear them Smile

Spaceal - I suppose it depends how often you intend to wash when deciding how many sleepsuits and vests you will need... I can't quite remember how many we had initially for DS but we averaged 1-2 during the day and 1-2 after bath/for bedtime. So probably 2-3 per day. We had a little routine where we got him changed in a morning and then bathed him on a night (which he loved and we've never changed this so he has always known it was bedtime if that makes sense?) and put a new sleepsuit on him then. This obviously isn't necessary unless the clothes are dirty. DS used to have very runny nappies though that often leaked! Wink I would guess we had about 10. People will buy them as gifts for you though. As for size, I agree with what Muser said, I wouldn't bother with small/tiny baby, unless you have a reason to believe your baby will be small. Visitors can bring them if necessary. I had lots I didn't use! In fact, newborn will not even last that long in most cases. M&S and Next do 'up to one month' which I found really useful and lasted longer than newborn, having said that, DS did weigh 8lb 15oz at birth so slightly larger than your average newborn.

Jeffily - I hope you're waters stay in place longer than 33+2 this time Shock. That must have been scary last time. At what gestation was your DD born?

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend Smile

haloflo · 09/01/2011 10:53

30 weeks today for me! I can't believe it. 3/4 of the way there!

With movement, I don't get loads. Its all low down (baby boxer?! Shock and DP still hasn't definatly felt anything from the outside. I have an anterior placenta too. Also movement has never kept me awake although I'm not a light sleeper.

I also worried LO would be breech due to the low down. I now worry why I don't feel his/her legs at my ribs (although i'm sure those of you with rib pain aren't too sympathetic!) I guess every baby is different.

After all the talk about kick counting I counted during Primeval last night. I got to 10 before the first half hour was up so that was good. My LO is always most active after food though so I knew it would be a good time to check.

jeffily I really like the look of the close baby carrier, thank you. I might give that a go although i'm wary of buying the wrong sling/carrier as they are quite pricey.

I didn't watch OBEM last time and wonder if its all a bit close for comfort now?! Plus the new series of Glee is on next Monday, I might stick to that!

Medee · 09/01/2011 11:53

Glee and OBEM are clashing unfortunately, so shall have to tape one. Last time OBEM was on I wasn't pregnant, so not sure how I will cope this time - the Christmas one was hard enough!

Muser · 09/01/2011 12:12

There's always E4+1, unless you're like me and need to be in bed by 10pm.

I will probably be taping OBEM, so I can fast forward through any bits that freak me out.

spaceal · 09/01/2011 12:16

Thanks for the clothes advice Muser and EvianBaby, very helpful. I got some more sleepsuits from Mothercare yesterday (buy one get one half price at the moment) and they're so cute. I can't believe we're going to be looking after someone that fits into them in eight weeks or so!

OH and I are going to make a list today of everything we need to buy before she arrives. Not sure if we'll actually get round to buying anything but...

One of my OH's colleagues had their baby at 31+3 on Friday - both mother and baby are doing very well though there were some complications, not sure what, but it's a little close to home as we're almost exactly the same dates as them. Does make me think that I need to get my hospital bag ready, just in case.

jeffily · 09/01/2011 14:16

The last series of OBEM is on 4OD as well if anyone wants to get in there before the new series! I guess the new one will go up too, for any clashes with Glee! Grin

spaceal DD was born at 34 weeks gest exactly. I was in hosp from when my waters went at 33+2 for monitoring and then she was in the SCBU for a week- 2 days on ventilation and a drip and then to help her get used to controlling her own body temperature and start to get over the jaundice. She was tube fed at first as well, as she was too weak to BF, but I was lucky enough to be able to establish BF quickly once she was well enough and we came home when she would have been 35+3 gestation and she thrived from then on in. She is our first so we had no comparison, but I realise now that it did mean that we had a long time when she was still like a little alien though, she didn't smile till she was 11 weeks, or hold up her head or any of those things that many babies do earlier than that. I am hoping that this one stays put longer, although I have to admit that as my mind turns to the actual birth I am thinking about weight! She was 6lb1oz and when they weighed her on her due date she was 9lb6oz- so that would have been quite a different situation to my 6 hour, complication free birth I think!

haloflo the baby carriers can be v expensive, the Ergo is over £100 new I think, but we got ours on ebay for £50 (which is still a lot but it really earnt it's money!) and the babasling we did buy new but I have since seen second hand lots for v cheap. I liked the look of the more stretchy close carriers, but DH refused to even consider them as he said he'd never wear anything so girlie! The babasling isn't for everyone- it does take a bit of getting used to, but I found it totally invaluable for cooking and for colicky evenings to have the LO close to me but still have hands free. Not sure how we are going to manage it this time with the LO and DD running about going spare as well. Hmm guess we'll just have to find a way through it all...

Hope you are all enjoying this lovely sunshine!

Darnsarfupnorf · 09/01/2011 16:26

havent been on here for a while so just checkin in again :)

baby feels massive now! dances to glee and cheryl cole despite my best efforts to educate her with classical music :p

having twinges every 25-30 minutes which is a bit worrying cus theyre following a pattern rather than being random like my braton hicks have been, keeping an eye on em but not worrying just yet! got a bit excited over the football but surely even giggs's penalty wasnt exciting enough to induce labour :p tip for the future if it was!!

hi all just thinking when the baby comes do u think it be a good idea to get my dd who will just turn two a few weeks before a present from the baby for when she comes to the hospital to meet her new brother i really dont want her to feel left out and she such a daddies girl she doesnt like sharing him at all i think the times gone so fast it only seems like yesturday we were talking about the 12 weeks scans .....

sittinghippo · 09/01/2011 17:54

Wowee you lot are chatty! Hard to keep up with you all!

emma I would say yes, that is what we are planning to do with our DD, set them off on the right foot with each other...

Am so excited as got my travel system today, not a brand new one, second hand on ebay, but for £45.00 so am really pleased. Picked it up today and apart from a couple of scuffs on the front footrest it is as good as new! Came with the car seat, rain cover, parasol, changing bag, cosy toes, the lot. Its an Urban Detour Extreme, and I chose this as I really wanted the pneumatic tyres as we do a lot of walking in the countryside and army ranges, and a friend has this one and it is like a dream to push, so light.
Cant wait to put it to good use... really am getting excited now as we draw ever closer. Am 31+4 now.

Also had antenatal class this week, NHS, held in the Sure Start centre across the road from me. It was really lovely, the midwife was very personable and put us all at ease. Decided to do the classes again as with DD it was ELCS so never experienced labour or pain relief and all the rest of it, so want to refresh my memory and see what has changed in 4 years!

Am going to see consultant on Wednesday to discuss the option of doing it naturally this time, and just hope hope hope baby has turned and isn't still breech, or there is no hope at all.

Oh and joy of joys, my ankles have started swelling up towards the end of the day, I look like an elephant when I go to bed Sad

It isn't essential to have a CS if baby is breach is it? Or is it only if you have had a CS before and baby is breach it is essential?

I am sure my mum said all 4 of us (my siblings and I) were born breach and only my sister was born by CS (although she was the last of us). CS scares the hell out of me mainly because I know little about it only that when I was 5 and my mum had one she was poorly and we had to be extra nice to her - so my granny kept telling me. mentally scarred.

What a bargain at £45 for the travel system!! I always seem to miss those bargains, what's your secret? Grin I only bought mine new because it was to be a present of my OH employer/adopted family who insisted they wanted to buy us a new one. Looking for a bargain carrycot to go with it from e-bay. Plenty on there - so many say "used once" or "used only a few times", makes it seem ridiculous to spend over £100 on one new.

Also... am I the only one who doesn't know if baby is breach or not? My midwife didn't tell me at my 28 week appointment and it isn't on my notes either. Got an appointment in just less than 2 weeks time, will she tell me then? I'll be 31+5 then.

1Catherine1 i have no idea which way this one is!! Most of movements are across my tummy button and cervix Confused!! can also feel 2 hard bumps which can either be one hard lump in left hip and other hard bit to right of belly button, or completely in line with each other across tummy. Have [gulp] 32 week m/w appt tomorrow will be 32+4, so will ask then. DS1 was breech and was turned at 37 weeks, doesn't really matter to me much as having ELCS anyway Grin Has anyone found that if baby has bit of slow day movemnet wise and really itchy skin that bump grows???? Have found that over weekend tummy really itchy, achey under bump and baby not as active, still lots of movement but little bit quieter!?! Hope you had good weeekends xx

Muser · 09/01/2011 19:59

I only got told which way the baby was at my 32 week appointment because I asked. Baby is head down, which I sort of expected as I get a lot of strong kicks in the ribs.

OP posts:
Medee · 09/01/2011 20:02

I was planning on asking at my next appointment.

sittinghippo · 09/01/2011 20:05

Catherine no it is not a definite CS if breech, I did last time because DD was incomplete breech ie; one foot up and one foot down, and at the time they took one look at my scan and said 'no way is that baby coming out naturally'. They didnt even attempt to turn it around as was all too jumbled up in there. So this time, provided baby is in the correct position I should be able to go the usual route, but any breech position now would almost certainly mean a second CS as it is 'too risky' to atempt normal breech delivery.
Having said all that, really, really dont worry about CS's as it was not the traumatic and terrifying experience I had imagined, in fact it was all very civilised, calm, had the radio playing, recovery was not too bad, all in all it was a positive experience for me.
Also, I wouldnt have known if baby was breech or not at 28 week appointment, it was only because I asked MW. She said she thought it was breech but it doesnt matter at this stage, only from 34 weeks onwards, and then the 'deadline' for baby to turn by itself is 37 weeks. So plenty of time yet and am trying not to work myself up about it.

Jupiter hmmm hospital bags. I think I read somewhere it is an idea to have a smaller handbag type bag as a labour bag, ie with lip balm, hairbrush, snacks and music/book, telephone numbers, ear plugs etc in it. And then a larger hospital bag that hubby can bring up when needed with all the extra stuff like clothes, dressing gown, slippers, washbag, all the stuff you would normally take for an overnight stay somewhere. There are a few threads in 'childbirth' that are pretty comprehensive.

niamh29 · 09/01/2011 20:14

I had a cs with DD2 cause she was breech but we are all way too early to worry about positioning, DD1 didn't turn till 36 weeks, and although I would rather have a normal birth I'm not worried about having another cs, what will be will be.

I am Sooooooo tired today, even after a relaxing weekend and lots of sleep, forgotten how tiring the last leg of pregnancy is!

GeekLove · 09/01/2011 21:35

Hello folks! How many of you have had the lurgy - I am on antibiotics as a result of infected sinuses which I must have had for a least a month after a cold. I have also got a flu jab booked - hope you all have had one too.
This thread reminds me that I had better get my finger out as I intend to have a homebirth. Will contact NCT for pool hire this week. Any of you having a homebirth too?

Also although this is the second time round there is SO much to do! Got to get the bedroom sorted for DS1 and get the clothes out of the attic for a start!
Roll on maternity leave!

Larty74 · 09/01/2011 23:01

Can I just say that I am SO excited to come home!!!??? 10 days at the parents is just about enough. And to think I have them coming to help with LO for erm, quite a bit longer than that. Hmm

Hope everyone is well. Feeling a bit stranded over here not getting much done as I read what you all are up to!

Take care.
