A cousin of mine named their daughter Persephone, which had us all talking as it's so unusual.
What are the most unusual names you've ever heard of?

Oh, also, Zephyr. And I know a Kawazaki. Parents are bikers.

LetThereBeRock · 12/02/2010 19:21

A friend was going to call her baby Cascade if it was a girl, thankfully she had a boy.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/02/2010 19:21

I read ages ago in an unusual names pole that someone called their child Show Cat. I'm not sure if it was a boy or girl.

LynetteScavo · 12/02/2010 19:22

Wanga (boy)

And Prudence for a boy.

Tortington · 12/02/2010 19:23

a guy at work said whatever the ex of the child they were going to call it Merlin.

now, if i didn't live Nr Brighton, i would have peed just a little with laughter - but as i do - i just raised an eyebrow

sfxmum · 12/02/2010 19:23

I think the boy of that man Jason Lee out of my name is Earl

is called Pilot Inspektor

Jonnywilkinsonsswordsteaknife · 12/02/2010 19:24

I have a friend who met a man whose daughter is named Kateira "after my wife's favourite drink and chocolate bar-Tia Maria and Kit Kat"

I have met a boy called Everest and a girl called Skyla. Traditional in France and Scotland respectively

upahill · 12/02/2010 19:29

Some one in the High School across town from mine was called Ambrose. I'd never heard of that 30odd years ago.
I know a Gadjet, Cloud and a Forest.

Gracie123 · 12/02/2010 19:29

We had a Mungo at school. It's fairly unusual.

Less unusual but very funny were a brother and sister called Ivor and Ophelia...

...their surname was Dick!

YearoftheDodo · 12/02/2010 19:30

My great uncle was called Jellicoe.

They were fishermen and I think it's a nautical connection - an admiral? Must look it up.

NorbertDentressangle · 12/02/2010 19:31

Custy -Merlin is quite a popular one.

It must be unisex too as I know of a woman aged about 35 called Merlin and a little 4yo boy. The boy is from a very hippy family but the woman is about as far from hippy as you can possibly imagine (hard as nails, no pacifist thats for sure!).

The best I can come up with in the unusual stakes is Tuppence

GothDetective · 12/02/2010 19:32

Tallulah Moonlight. Moonlight being the surname.

Lionstar · 12/02/2010 19:39

Fine calling these names unusual, many of them are, but lets draw the line at slagging them off. It's not like these people have started their own Baby Names thread "What do your think of Cholmondeley Farquhar Desiree?"

And there is mumsnetter with a Geronimo, I'm sure you're making her feel just peachy.

LetThereBeRock · 12/02/2010 19:49

Sorry but some names are so unusual that they're just bad.

I'm quite sure that many people would hate the names I like but such is life. I'm not going to take it personally.

I didn't know we had a MN who called her baby Geronimo but that doesn't change my opinion. And I'd imagine she's accustomed to such comments.
It'd certainly raise a few eyebrows. And if you give your child a very unusual name then you have to accept not everyone is going to say they love it.

As much as one may like a very unusual name, not thinking of any in particular, it's the child who has to live with not the parent so I feel some restraint is necessary however much Talula does the hula from Hawaii appeals to you.

Niddlynono · 12/02/2010 19:59

I once saw a teenage girl on the news called Takeela. Almost as bad as Sambuca (Waterloo Road character).

Joni783 · 12/02/2010 20:07

I heard this women calling for her daughter in the clothing store, the girls name was 'teperance', am I the only one who thinks this name is horrible? Also another name is, my sister who named her son 'justice' I dont like it at all, it just sounds odd.. But each to there own.

I know a Domino (girl). Quite like it!

momofnearly2 · 12/02/2010 20:25

I really like some of these names mentioned here.

My friend has a little brother called Yogi.

It really suited him and I loved it but of course he choose to go by his middle name of Charlie when he started at high school.

tanmu82 · 12/02/2010 20:27

I quite like Persephone - not to use myself, but it is really pretty.
My real name is unusual and my dad is a Theophilus.....My aunt had a schoolfriend Called, wait for it.......Vagina (Vag-ee-na)

Kayzr · 12/02/2010 20:31

mintyfresh · 12/02/2010 20:31
