A cousin of mine named their daughter Persephone, which had us all talking as it's so unusual.
What are the most unusual names you've ever heard of?

Jambo. Oddly, it was once an accepted name amongst the upper classes, even though it sounds like something you'd buy deep fried and covered in chilli sauce.

Met a little girl called Eden today which I think is rather lovely.

Elvismania (pronounced ElvisMANNia). And it was a woman. She was Brazilian and her father was an Elvis fan...

I know someone who did classics whose DD is called Thisbe (as in Pyramus and Thisbe) I think it's gorgeous.
My niece is also a Lorien, it suits her somehow.

I know I'm getting old .. but there seems to be a fashion in our part of the world for teenage mums to make up names themselves and spell them using all sorts of letters that don't actually add anything to the pronunciation of the name ... the latest one I've come across is:

Jaymison James Matteson

I've change the surname but it does end in 'son' and have 3 syllables.

The first name is spelt Jay-mison but pronounced Jameson (like the whiskey).

Told you I'm getting old!!! lol

Reminds me of A A Milne's Poem Disobedience - about James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George Dupree!!

I know a wee boy called Bruin, I think it's a great name.

Also know a wee girl called Sula, I think it means sunshine in African or something. It's beautiful but if she doesn't like it when she's older she can be a Sue.

Went to school with a girl called Aramis, it completely suited her original personality.

I like different names but will definitely project them 20 years into the future when it's possible my ds/dd may want to be an investment banker!

victoriascrumptious · 26/02/2010 18:51

Attila

My dad's cousin's DCs are called Tiger and Jaguar (girl/boy). Their equally odd surname pushes both their names into Zappatown.

When my friend's dd3 popped out she was so hairy (she still has an enormous amount of thick curly dark hair and dark eyebrows) her DP said "She looks like my mate Pedro!" So they called her Petra Not that unusual (it was on my DD1 shortlist) but silly story.

I went to school with a Dulcie. It was so unusual I told my parents, who would periodically ask after her purely because of her odd name.

Blottedcopybook · 26/02/2010 19:50

An acquaintance has children called Newlin and Doone.

I thought I was being fancy with my Greer and Nairn!

My DD has a friend called Faerie (pronounced Fairy)

Cobblers · 26/02/2010 21:07

Taffeta, Arethusa and Stevonna.

shockers · 26/02/2010 21:27

I have met a girl called Blue and a boy called Chase.
The oddest one was a mum who told me her DD was called Chantellamy because she couldn't decide between Chantelle and Amy. This must have been at least 20 years ago but I've always wondered if the child shortened her own name when she got older.

ChildOfThe70s · 26/02/2010 21:27

Genuine names I've come across over the years:

Loveday
America
Zena (like the warrior princess!)
Griselda

love persephone by the way!!

ChildOfThe70s · 26/02/2010 21:28

Oh, and also Chance for a girl
