A cousin of mine named their daughter Persephone, which had us all talking as it's so unusual.
What are the most unusual names you've ever heard of?

I know someone who health-visited a Lucifer... Think the mum just thought it sounded nice?!

Iklboo · 30/04/2010 13:10

DH's mate told us last night he was seeing a girl called Belgrano.

When we said it was an unusual name he told us she's really called Kelly but he nick named her Belgrano because 'went down really quickly' [twunt emoticon]

grumperina · 30/04/2010 14:10

Odysseus (Oddy for short!)
Isambard
Éomer (from Lord of the Rings)
Neo
Denim

fufu · 30/04/2010 14:45

I lived with hippies who called their first born son Ebenezer Hedgehog Finbarr Cringebottom. He would be about 19 now. I wonder if he changed his name last year.

allbie · 30/04/2010 15:06

Bunty Buttercup! Titus and Strawberry Blue.

Ineedsomesleep · 30/04/2010 17:50

grumperina are you in Warrington by any chance? Just wondering if the Denim you know is the same one.

grumperina · 30/04/2010 19:24

No, I'm in a part of the country that's almost diagonally opposite to Warrington (iyswim)! Bit worrying to think that there are two children with this name...

Ostia · 30/04/2010 19:29

i absolutely LOVE the name Persephone ever since i became acquainted with the greek myth many years ago. i wish i was called Persephone - maybe i could change my name by deed poll?!

Bruin (boy) and Pink (for a girl, obviously!) - are two fairly unusual names i have come across that i can remember.

CoinOperatedGirl · 30/04/2010 21:41

I knew a lady with dd's Siobhan and erm Chevelle (I actually have no idea how she spelled the names). My niece has friends Chenille and Nokia(I think this may be commonish in Poland maybe?). Also a lady I was talking to had a dd named Lilla, which I had never heard before.

Can't think of any really outlandish names, although I do love some already mentioned on the thread. Mordecai is great, I'm a big fan of biblical names, dp was a big spoilsport though.

everydayinMK · 30/04/2010 22:24

Names I have recently heard in the park and/or at NHS antenatal classes:

Amnesty
Axel Stone
Arizona Storm
Seraphim

CaptainNancy · 30/04/2010 22:38

Seraphim? There is a MNer with a Seraphim... I thought possibly the only Seraphim in the country!
But if you're in MK, then not likely to be the same child.

FlumpetMum · 01/05/2010 09:05

Fuck me, why does everyone hate their kids?

manchestermummy · 01/05/2010 10:54

My mum's family has quite a nice tradition of giving boys a family surname as a middle name. So my uncles and cousins have nice additions like Allen, Craig, Smith etc etc. You get the idea. Mum's cousin, however, ended up with Burpie.

Journey · 01/05/2010 13:28

My own children's names! I love them.

eatyourveg · 01/05/2010 13:33

I know of a Tuppence and an Anradh pronounced Onrah

IvaNighSpare · 01/05/2010 14:13

used to know a little girl called Lottie-Lou.
Asked if it was short for Charlotte Louise and was given a very hard stare and told "no- that is her name"

crabb · 01/05/2010 14:30

Cousin of a former workmate called his son Vyper Shanghai.

MimsyStarr · 01/05/2010 14:41

I know a Zeus.

Doesn't throw bolts of lightning but he is one cool dude.

Also an Andromache.

feralgirl · 01/05/2010 14:51

Anfield

Hahaha at tuppence; that's what my gran calls poo!

solo · 01/05/2010 15:05

Years before becoming a Mother, I wanted to name a daughter Ariadne. Still rather like it actually.

everydayinMK · 02/05/2010 01:48

Big for FlumpetMum

GingaNinja · 02/05/2010 09:21

Haw haw at FlumpetMum.

Depends where you live. DD has Elizabeth as her middle name and the number of times I've had raised eyebrows and comments about 'how unusual' - then again, we don't live in UK.

In fact we live nearish Kinvara (the small Irish town mentioned by someone else earlier on the thread)!

sunandmoon · 02/05/2010 09:24

Casimir

mamatron · 02/05/2010 15:29

I knew someone who looked after a Propella Mermaid (Ella for short).
My nephew is friends with a Groove (boy)
I love the name Antigone and I'd spell Tiger as Tyger if I was ever blessed with another(boy or girl)

CakeandRoses · 02/05/2010 23:02

Loving these names!

Unusual names I've known:

Silver (girl)
Ocean (boy)
Zinnia (girl) - which I think is lovely. Was known as Zinny which is cute too
Arwen (girl. As in Lord of the Rings) - not that unusual probably

OP - Persephone is v cool
