A cousin of mine named their daughter Persephone, which had us all talking as it's so unusual.
What are the most unusual names you've ever heard of?

I've got a friend on FB called Sharlen (a woman). I must say it's a name I've not come across before - most unusual, but I think it's a beautiful name! So much so, that I may even consider it if I had another daughter.

Lifegoeson · 14/02/2010 23:40

I met a guy at a party called Pelmet...

I live in New Zealand, the birthplace of odd names. The only limit to name your child here is the decision of the registrar of the moment. One of the posters has already mentioned "Tallulah Does The Hula From Hawaii"... that was actually a New Zealand girl who sued her parents and requested the judge to allow her to change her name. She won, fortunately.

Another stupid name here in NZ was "Bus Stop No 6" for a boy.

But getting away from extreme names, a very unusual one is one of my friends' son's: Galileo.

I bet she's glad to have a friend like you, selenafan

Just remembered another, and this left me speechless and not quite knowing how to arrange my face - met a distant family member of DH who had just called her baby girl Kenyon.

NinthWave · 15/02/2010 10:26

There was a woman being interviewed on Radio 4 the other morning whose first name was Solitaire - never heard that before, but I liked it!

If DS had been a girl his middle name would have been Persephone.

tanmu82 · 15/02/2010 12:02

I once met a saleslady at a makeup counter in some department store or another who was called Candida...now I know this is not all that unusual, but all I could think of was itchy nethers.....!

TiggyR · 15/02/2010 12:53

Yes it's a proper name - just a rather unfortunate one!

dunbreedin · 15/02/2010 15:36

I saw in a magazine here in Singapore of a man with dc called I-Jae, I-Rae and I-Zach. I tried to be non-judgey and wondered if maybe the I- thing was religious or something, but still a snigger escaped before I could stop it!

Druidmama · 15/02/2010 15:49

I know sisters...Ocean and Sahara (just the combo that is unusual)

A 6mth old boy Zed Rainbow

A 3yo boy Tawny (which I love and really suits him!)

Brothers Edwin and Hugh...I couldn't get my head around Hugh on a newborn, but it really really suits him!

23skidoo · 15/02/2010 17:47

Never met anyone with my own name, Hildefuns, and I know sisters called Porche and Mercedes (lol) and a girl called Ocean.

livefortoday · 21/02/2010 23:07

ocean (girl)
shadow (boy)
fossil (boy) this really suits him

BedtimeBear · 22/02/2010 15:26

I don't really know any- my friend however had a girl in her class called Apricot, and knew an Autumn Forecast (Forecast surname).

I think Jermaine Jackson's son is called Jermajesty. Love it.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 22/02/2010 16:09

Maverick.

nighbynight · 22/02/2010 16:32

dd2's name is so unusual that when you google it, you get no results.
It is a very old name from her father's country, and basically means that she is from a particular area.

I LOVE African style names like Mercy, Patience, Precious, Loveliness, Vigilant.

By the way, to whoever mentioned Sahara; it's a traditional name in north Africa, usually spelled without the middle "a."

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/02/2010 16:39

Zhazawanie, pron. Shaz-or-nie

A girl who would now be about 20. Apparently her mum got the name off Rikki Lake.

Lulabell · 22/02/2010 16:49

Daysjia - pronounced like "deja" in French - for a boy

Foster for a boy

Plasenta for a girl (I kid you not)

HarrietHarpy · 22/02/2010 22:59

I have an Aunty Conception.

DS used to have a classmate called Blade.

tiredfeet · 23/02/2010 18:57

There was a girl called Heron at my school, she was stunning so the name sort of worked

missytequila · 23/02/2010 19:48

Female

pronounced 'Fe-Mall-ie'

Mother was in hospital and had not yet chosen a name for her daughter so the hospital bracelet was labeled 'female, Brown'... Brown was the surname.

Mother thought the midwife had chosen a name for her so she liked it and stuck with it.

Poor girl had to explain to everyone that her mom was ignorant and didnt know what female meant...

gigismummy · 23/02/2010 21:38

I heard of someone who called their kid Salmon (sal for short)... and their surname was Port. Poor kid.

ladymarian · 24/02/2010 15:33
