A cousin of mine named their daughter Persephone, which had us all talking as it's so unusual.
What are the most unusual names you've ever heard of?

The nicest one I ever heard was a friend of a friend called Priti Mistri. I always thougth it sounded like a song title.

a parent calling their child in the playground: Wivernny!Wivernny!
Interested onlooker: What a lovely name, how do you spell that?
Parent: Y-V-O-N-N-E.

Omicron you reminded me that my DH taught a girl whose name was pronounced 'See-yo-ban' - spelled Siobhan.

Not as bad as yours (PMSL at Wiverney) but still!

icecoldcatsbum · 26/04/2010 17:35

I knew a Velta and a Wenonah - both girls. Wenonah means first born daughter apparently but I don't know where it comes from.

SiriusStar · 26/04/2010 22:59

I know of a family that named their children some fairly normal names after celebrities about 15--20 years ago. The strange thing is, they included surnames. Some modern equivalents would be
David Beckham Jones
Kerry Katona Jones
Robert Pattinson Jones

Winsome
Epiphany

Digger (boy)

Titus.

I mean really... this was on a grownup - perhaps his parents were history scholars, or fans of particularly gory shakespeare plays???

Not both from Devon are you? I know both Zhazawanie and Ostara (easter) very well.

Yes EatingSwans I am from Devon (Ilfracombe) - I worked in a school where Zhazawanie was a pupil, about 11 years ago. It must be the same person!

gagamama · 27/04/2010 09:34

I was watching Holiday Swap or some such rubbish a few years ago, and one of the families were quite posh and their teenage DD was called Calamity. I remember sitting through the whole thing trying to work out if Calamity was just a jokey nickname, but they seemed a fairly humourless bunch and she was referred to as Calamity throughout the whole programme, so who knows?

(As an aside, I just Googled it to see if it was a bona fide name and I was just missing something, and apparently "similar-sounding names" include Chlamydia and Cement).

posieparker · 27/04/2010 14:12

My niece is called Bunty.

I was thinking of Oslo for dc4 and Maybe for Dc3(didn't do it though).
